]VFUrequests changes
to marketing board
The National Farmers
Union has requested the
Ontario Milk Marketing
Board to make some much
needed changes in the quota
transfer policy for the coming
year.
Blake Sanford, Co-
ordinator for Region 3 of the
NFU, in a letter to the
Chairman of the O.M.M.B.
urged the marketing board to
establish a quota policy that
would require all quota
transfers to be handled
through the board at a set
price and that this price be a
diminishing price that would
eventually bring the price of
quota in Ontario to "zero".
In the dairy year of 1976-77
all quota transfers were
handled through the board at
a set price but in the past year
Market Share quota transfers
• have been returned to the
open market and this has left
the door open for un-
scrupulous dealings, allowing
some people to speculate .on
quotas. The price of Market
Share Quota has risen over
ten times in value since it was
returned to the open Market.
Mr. Sanford added that the
NFU described the quota
policy of 1976-77, when all
quota transfers were handled
by the board as a step in the
right direction, but look upon
last year's policy when
Market Share Quota tran-
sfers were returned to the
open market as a "disaster"
as far as the milk industry is
concerned.
