Journal Argus reported that
the chance of a major spring
flood in the town this year is
unlikely_
Fire Chief Don Swan told
the Journal that even though
there is a considerable
amount of snow pack left to
melt, the Thames and Trout
Creek look good.
He explained that the water
is getting away good and
problems would only arise if
there was heavy downpour
of rain_ He noted that sand
and sand bags are still
available just in case some
flooding does develop_
The Lucknow Sentinel
informed its readers that
residents in the village will be
paying S6 more on their April
1 water bill_
The Sentinel explained that
the Lucknow council decided
to raise the yearly charge of
water from 854 to 860 to offset
the capital maintenance costs
incurred last year_
Council said that they had
no alternative but to raise the
rate since repairs were made
to the standpipe which cost
810,000 and then unexpectedly
87,000 was needed to repair
one of the pumps.
Clerk Alf Herbert explained
to council that the water rates
in most towns in the area are
between 860 and 865 a year.
"We just keep going one
day at a time,'' explained
George and Esther Campbell
to the Huron Expositor when
asked about their success of
their 50 year marriage_
The couple, from McKillop
Township were the guests of
honor at a reception at the
Stratford Country Club when
more than 100 neighbours,
friends and relatives came to
honor their marriage.
Along with 50 years of
married life, the couple
raised five children and have
been very active in com-
munity clubs throughout the
years.
Life is much easier now, the.
couple told the Expositor than
during the Depression when
they were first married_
The Zurich Citizens' News
reported that at the annual
meeting of the Bluewater
Rest Home it was learned
that the home had a quiet
year with no major problems.
Dr. Charles Wallace,
chairman of the board of
directors explained to the
group that any hopes of
construction of an additional
wing to the home were dashed
when ministry officials in-
formed the board that no
funds for either capital or
operating costs would be
available.
Dr. Wallace explained that
some thought had been given
to the construction of a wing
with an apartment type units.
It was the idea that the units
would be available to in-
dividuals who were basically
self-sufficient, but who
required some care.
Dancing, fiddling
logsawing, a tug-of-war, bed
races, a parade, a cultural
display and the crowning of
the queen were just some of
the main events that brought
out the Listowel crowds on
March 17 and 18 for the first
Paddyfest_
The Listowel Banner
reported that the Paddyfest,
sponsored by the Listowel
Kinsman was a tremendous
success. It is not known yet
whether the St_ Patrick's Day
celebration was a financial
success.
A pancake breakfast, an
Irish stew dinner, special
guest Miss Canada, along
with other dignitaries and a
prize trip for two to Ireland
were also part of the
festivities of the weekend_
