To all our high school
students: "In the lexicon of
youth, which fate reserves for
a bright manhood, there is no
such word as FAIL." So
wrote Bulwer-Lytton.
And we write to you all -
hang in there. Even if you
have to go it alone. Show that
you can do it and that you can
earn your year not because of
the Ministry of Education, the
Board or the teachers, but in
spite of them.
+++
If one has to celebrate one's
85th birthday in a hospital -
then the way to do it is with a
champagne party. Joe
Silcock of Joseph Street did
just that along with 15
friends. Topping the list of
well-wishers was daughter
Mary Silcock who motored
down for the occasion from
Ottawa.

Mr. and Mrs. Bob Liver-
more and family and Mrs.
Livermore's mother, Mrs.
Glen Swan have returned
from a Florida holiday. While
there they visited in Tampa,
Clearwater, Disney World,
Bush Gardens and Cypress
Gardens.
Always the sports en-
thusiast, Bob was able to
attend two baseball games.
He saw Cincinnati Reds play
the New York Mets and
Boston Red Sox against the
Minnesota Twins. Another
first was seeing the
Greyhound Races at St.
Petersburgh.

While away recently, Mrs.
Blanche Deeves of RR3
Clinton visited the Franklin
D. Roosevelt Library in Hyde
Park, N.Y. Blanche left a post
card of Clinton with the head
of security police at the
Library and has received an
acknowledgement back. In
part, this reads: "The
postcard is interesting. The
picture of Clinton appears to
have been taken on a Sunday,
since so few people are on the
street. Clinton looks like a
very nice town, clean and
quiet. We will certainly put up
the card where others in the
Museum can enjoy it." So
there - we are now basking in
the reflected glory of the late
president of the U.S.A.

a euchre party on the evening
of March 23. There were
enough enthusiastic card
players to fill 12 tables and
after 10 games were played,
Lorna Ellis and Tillie
Westerhout succeeded in
getting the most lone hands.
Mrs. Frank Riley of Win-

Grandstand
- • from page 3
build the grandstand for
$234,300 beginning work
within 40 days of contract
time and completing this
work in 18 weeks.
COMPLETION DATE
IMPORTANT
The number of weeks in
which the grandstand can be
completed is an important
factor as well as the price.
Don McKay of the Goderich
Trotting Association says
tentative dates have been
booked with the Ontario
Racing Association for this
year's harness races in
Goderich commencing July
20.
The committee had
originally estimated the costs
of building the grandstand at
$230,000 ' plus $25,000 for
soccer lights, $25,000 for hard
ball lights, $25,000 to remodel
the fast ball field and $10,000
for remodelling the track.
This brings the cost for the
total project to an estimated
$315,000.
An application will be sent
to Wintario for a grant to
cover some of these costs and
various fund raising ac-
tivities are being carried out
to help raise the remaining
costs.
The latest fund raising
project is the selling of lottery
tickets for $100 a ticket with a
chance to win $1,000 a month
for 52 weeks starting May 8.
There are 1,100 of these
tickets now out for sale with a
maximum of 1,500 to be sold.
The Goderich Sports
Committee was the name
chosen for the group which
has been working on the
grandstand project to date.
This project will only be one
of many areas that the
committee will cover. Larry
Jeffrey was elected chairman
of the committee and several
subcommittees were formed
for the grandstand project.
The building subcommittee
for the grandstand project is
composed of Bob Gibbons as
chairman and councillor Bob
Allen, Deputy Reeve Eileen
Palmer, councillor John
Doherty and Don McKay. The
grounds improvement sub-
committee for the project will
consist of Councillor Elsa
Haydon as chairman and Ron
Klages, John Doherty, Ed
Ervine, Erwin Schneider and
John Bisset. And the fund
raising subcommittee for the
project will be chaired by
Mary Donnelly with mem-
bers Bill Kirkey, Dianne
Mitchelmore, Chris Maillot,
Doug Harrison, Jean McGee,
Bill Brown, Del Mitchelmore,
Ron Allan, Ron McBride and
George Peagan.

Stuck 111 the middle -§
by Shelley McPhee
There's something about a person with an accent, they
can convince me to buy anything.
The idea of a European salesman is often used on
television commercials. They hold the mystique of class,
sophistication, honesty and quality, something that we
North Americans are not particularly known for.
Who could resist the subtle persuasion of Catherine
Deneuve as she sells Chanel No. 5. The commercial gives
the impression that women with the soft, sophisticated,
sexy qualities of the French Deneuve should wear
nothing but the best perfume. Hmmm, I wonder where I
went wrong, I bought some Chanel and still came out as
Shelley McPhee, only this time I smelled pretty.
The French must be my weakness. I went out and
bought- four dozen Bic pens after Jean Claude Killy
convinced me in his commercial. Despite the fact that
Killy is a French skier, he came across on the screen that
he was born with a Bic pen in his hand.
I'm not really a coffee drinker, but I'd drink a gallon of
the stuff if Ricardo Montalban offered it tome. I can just
imagine it - sitting in a large wicker chair in the warm
South American climate with Ricardo at my side,
wearing his Panama hat of course, and sipping on a cup
of rich coffee. Who cares, if it keeps me awake for a
week.
A great setting for a car commercial is Rome. I don't
think that the Romans have a monopoly on a car selling
business, but if my old clunker looked that good against
the Colliseum and if the gorgeous female lying across the
hood was substituted by some great Roman lover, I
might consider.
I guess I'm just an easy prey, but it sure beats
Josephine the Plumber, Mr. Whipple and Price and
Pride.
