And in the ongoing school strike there is a glimmer of hope since the Board lifted the lockout. The reality may come, we are told, March 28 or ,at least the Boyd and the OSSTF will be speaking to and accepting ftom each other hopefully. +++ Well, let's talk about something with more of a note of promise in it - like the birds -who are quite oblivious of school strikes and such. Maybe someone else has had a first robin sighting - but the first to phone the News - Record and report one was Mrs. Faye Fear of Queen Street who saw the welcome red breasted bird in her back yard. The office phone rang again shortly after. the above call and it was Miss Jean McEwen of RR 5 Clinton to tell us she had just seen the first killdeer to return to her garden. +++ On Saturday afternoon, March 18 the ladies of the James Street senior residence sponsored a very enjoyable euchre party. The proceeds of $56.25 were handed to Mrs. Ted Davies for the Women's Auxiliary to the Clinton Hospital. The ladies concerned wish to thank all who came and made the party such a suc- cess and also those who were unable to attend but still sent in their donations. Mrs. Edward Farquhar won the prize for high score. + ++ Some readers may have noted in a previous edition of our paper the passing of a former minister of Ontario Street United Church, the Rev. Glen Eagle. When he was alive, Mr. Eagle had visualized and planned for the erection of a small memorial chapel at their farm near Creemore, Ontario. Mrs Eagle . her family and friends have undertaken to make the minister's dream a reality. As a tribute to his work in Ontario Street Church, the church session has recom- mended that it too be represented in this memorial undertaking. To this end a memorial . fund has been established with Miss Olive Johnson, Mr. Bob Elliott and Mr. George Lavis forming the committee in charge. Anyone wishing to make a donation should address it to Miss Olive Johnson, c -o Ontario Street United Church, Clinton, Ont. All contributions will be credited through the Special Projects fund of the' church. + ++ We have received a news release, while not interesting to everyone may be of special note to some. It concerns The Louise Plumb Award for beginning writers in Ontario. tt'__titk sic Kk x • WISHES A HAPPY BIRTHDAY To ' Adam Renshaw Scott Jervis Mark Walker [1 Shelley Crawford Suzanne Kiss Mark Livermore Clinton Clinton Clinton R.R. 2; Clinton Clinton Clinton On March 23 March 24 March 25 March 25 March 25 March 26 To Join - just come into the News Record office Albert St. Clinton or phone name entered in the Birthday button: Mk ?tic 834 53 482-3443 and have your Book and get your FREE (f)6-,2=4 "WI" CHILDREN'S CORNER LITTLE PEOPLE'S PUZZLE 1 DOWN 1 9 3 1 4 -ACROSS 1 I - ACROSS 7 -ACROSS) J.? -ACROSS l ca, 1977 United FeAtufP riynr1., Nns 9'00101 9 '3SO1rI 'E 'S1:131ld 'Z 'dIHS t -- uMod 3ONVI:i0 6 'SSV -1 '1 '3dld '9 'SIHI .v 'S83ddllS t SlJ3MSNV MIX-UPS We count by -__ _ Opposite of "No" _ _ — You and 1 makes Flowers have _ . _._ ._ before they bloom What we smell with NOW unscramble the first latter of each answer and It will spell (Also known as Peter Cotton tall) Answer to last week's Mix-ups 41, apple, down, nest, hop spells HAND This award is in memory of Dr. Louise Plumb who was a founding member of the London (Ontario) Branch of the Canadian Author's Association. Council news Housing needs and studies represented a sizeable por- tion of the minutes from Goderich Township Council's March 6 meeting. Council passed a motion requesting the Ontario Ministry of Housing to prepare Municipal Housing Statements on the township's behalf and the town of Clinton's behalf, to determine housing needs within their municipalities. Clinton has requested that Goderich Township co- operate in a joint senior citizen housing study for the area. Goderich Township Council passed a motion requesting that the Ministry of Housing conduct a study regarding the needs for senior citizen housing for the Town of Clinton and that portion of Goderich Township adjacent to the town. Council also passed a motion endorsing the project that the Ministry of Housing, through the Ontario Housing Corporation, provide 53 units of rental housing ac- commodation on a geared to income basis for senior citizens in the Township of Goderich, the Township of Colborne and the Town of Goderich. In other business, Larry Jeffrey of Goderich asked Goderich Township Council to participate in selling lottery tickets in aid of the Goderich grandstand renewal. Council instructed the township clerk to reply that council has not been in the habit of getting personally involved in such sales but that Mr. Jeffrey or his committee had per- mission to sell tickets within the Township of Goderich. Land severances were requested by M. Thompson (an amended application) and Roy Cullen. Council passed a motion that M. Thompson's request not be recommended and that Cullen's be approved as per questionnaire. Elmer and Cathy Potter were at the council meeting to obtain information regarding severances, building permits, etc. No motions were recorded regarding this. Building permits were requested by Alf Hawkins for a seasonal residence, Paul Blair for a residence, Frank Graham for the demolition of a cottage and ;.two' sheds, T. Westerhout for a broiler barn, Alvin Betties for a porch demolition and an addition to house, John Shepherd for an addition to barn, Steve Hantho for a residence and Don Edward for a residence. Stuck in the middle By Shelley McPhee The state of Canadian tourism is an issue that is con- tinually being criticized and examined for im- provements. However, the improvements presently being made are on a national and international scale. I recently found out that problems also exist at the local level. My beef against tourism and travelling, specifically the bus lines, began on Sunday when I was trying to get some information from the United Trails bus lines about the times of' their buses. However, I discovered one major difficulty in obtaining that information',' no local bus depots are open on Sundays, at least not until later in the day. Not knowing when the London bus left on Sunday, I called business number to get some information on the bus schedule. The out-of-town business also serves as a bus depot. However, when the telephone was answered, the voice on the other end told me to call the depot number. So I rang the depot number, however, the people who were looking after the business phone wouldn't answer the depot number, despite the fact that I let it ring at least 30 times, just out of spite. So, I called the business number again and was told in a less hospitable voice that the bus depot does not open until 6:30 p.m. on Sundays. This more than irritated me since I knew that the same people who answer the business phone also look after the depot and even more aggravating, the depot phone sits right beside the business telephone. I knew in the back of my mind that the bus I wanted left at about 6:40 p.m., but I wanted confirmation of this. So at about 5:30 p.m. I tried the depot phone again. This time it was answered, but when I asked again about the London bus I was told that it had just left. - "But what about the 6:40 bus" I seethed, "For your information it has connections for London." "Oh I forgot about that one, I guess you're right," answered a rather vague voice at the other end. "Thanks a lot for your help," I said sarcastically and hung up, rather loudly. Well for all the trouble it was worth I'd rather "Fly United" next time. • News of Hensall By Bertha MacGregor Palm Sl,inday Service Rev. I was interested in knowing what they had on file so I wrote the Stratford office. After two weeks with no reply I phoned them, only to be told that, no information was available unless I called in person at their office. Probably the reason that they would refuse to. divulge any information over the phone„ was because they had no way of knowing that your call was a genuine one. I don't think you will encounter any problem when you visit them in person and can prove your identity, however, if you should, please let nie know and I'll pursue the matter further.
