HomeMy WebLinkAboutClinton News-Record, 1978-03-09, Page 20The future of the Walton
Public School is still causing
concern amongst the
students' parents.
The Huron Expositor
reported that about 200 area
parents gathered recently to
hear the Board of Education
trustees confirm that a board
committee is recommending
the closure of the school•.
If the recommendation is
passed, this would mean that
the Walton Public School
children would be bused to
Seaforth Public School and
that the Grade 8 classes from
IDthe Seaforth school would be
transferred to Seaforth
District High School.
According to the committee
the closure and the change
will help the board to save
money. However the parents
didn't get any details on how
money would be saved since
the board was scheduled to
discuss it on March 6.
Not only have people felt
the wrath of winter, but the
Listowel Banner reported
that recently a pup was
rescued from his bout with
the snow.
Four boys, while trying to
free a stuck snow machine
from a deep ditch kicked a
mound of snow and found
underneath it, in a little water
filled cavern under the snow,a
puppy.
The young dog who had
been lost by a local man a
week earlier was helpless,
hungry and nearly frozen
when the boys found him.
The Lucknow Sentinel
proudly reported that three pf
`the village's archers hold
most of the major cham-
pionship titles in Canadian
and Ontario Barebow com-
petition.
Peter Steer is Canadian
Outdoor Barebow and
Ontario Indoor Barebow
champion in the men's
division. Carol Adams holds
the ladies' division 'titles for
Ontario Outdoor Barebow
Champion and both the
Canadian and Ontario Indoor
Barebow Champion.
Meanwhile Carol's husband,
Ken Adams, is silver
medalist in Canadian Outdoor
and Indoor Barebow and the
Ontario Indoor Barebow
men's division.
The Exeter Town council is
not planning to make any
rash decisions on the
proposed police com-
munications system for the
county.
The Exeter Times -
Advocate -reported that the
council passed a motion that
they take no further action on
the proposed police com-
munication for the county
until certain points are
clarified.
The recommendation, to go
slowly, was made after
council learned that that
capital cost of the new
communication system to be
hooked up in the five county
towns may. be much higher
than previously outlined.
Mayor - Bruce Shaw also
explained that there was
some question about the
desirability of the system's
centrai location being in
Goderich.
The Kincardine News
reported that the Kincardine
Township Council may be
setting up their own fire
department since they aren't
satisfied with the town
council's fire agreement.
Carl Bailey, RR 5, Kin-
cardine pointed out to the
township council that they
will pay $22,000 this year for
the fire agreement with the
town.
"Are we going to let Kin-
cardine take all our money
and do nothing for us or are
we going to buy a fire truck,"
he said.
He added that if the
township council pays $22,000
this year and maybe $30,000
next year they could have a
truck paid for. Bailey also
explained to the council that
he has spoken to other
residents about the idea and
they support his proposal.
Council decided to pass a
motion to ask the Fire
Marshall of Ontario to do a
confidential financial study
n the fire needs in the
ownship.
Presently the township
pays $22,000 to Kincardine for
the first 10 fires and $900 for
each fire after that. The
township also pays the
Tiverton Fire Department
$7,000 for protection of the
north half of the area.
The St. Marys Journal -
Argus reported that the St.
Marys Police Association is
not happy With an answer
they received from the town's
police committee regarding
the double promotion of a
constable.
The Association had filed -
grievance with the polic
Through the other weeklies
committee after Chief
Edward Matherson refused to
repeal the double promotion
of a constable from
probationary status to
second-class constable,
therefore skipping the rank of
third-class constable.
The committee agrees with
the chief's decision and the
Association feel that a double
probation is highly irregular,
however feel that it is
deserved if the constable has
performed outstanding
service.
The Association feels that
Chief Matherson and the
committee are showing
favoritism by supporting the
double promotion.
The Association also noted
that the promotion would
result in a pay increase to the
constable of $2,300 and the
other members of the St.
Marys Police Department
will not be receiving such a
pay raise. This too, they felt,
might cause some
disagreement and hurt the
morale amongst the force.
The Association hopes to
receive a satisfactory answer
from the council, but they
explained that they are quite
prepared to go to court if
necessary. This move is
allowed in the Police Act.

District High School in
Exeter told the Zurich
Citizens' News that the
March exams that were
scheduled to begin on March 8
will be cancelled.
He continued to say that
class tests and other forms of
evaluation would be used to
form a second term mark. To
make up for the spring
examination a June
examination period has been
set up in the Exeter high
school. However Wooden
added that some form of
recommendation program
will be used so that all the
students will not have to write
the final set of exams.
John Cochrane, director for
the -Board of Education told
the Citizens' News that none
of the teachers' recom-
mendations will be fully
accepted until they meet.
The Brussels Post reported

The Wingham Advance
Times reported that con-
servation officers at the
ministry of natural resources
is asking everyone owning
dogs to keep them tied up and
prevent the killing of deer in
the area.
The owner of a dog found
running at large during the
closed season for deer can be
charged under the Game and
Fish Act and the dog can be
shot if they are found chasing
deer.
The ministry noted that
attempts to control the
wanton killing is difficult
because many dog owner
refuse to believe that their
pets would chase deer and
there are others who can't be
bothered ' to keep their pets
tied.
Most of the deer that have
been killed so far are
yearlings that have been
weakened by the winter or
does with fawn.
The, Blyth Standard

INTERESTING FACTS:
Heavy masonry chimneys are often used to ac-
commodate one of the lightest substances known
to man — smoke. A Pro -Jet chimney weighing un-
der 150 lbs. does the same job as a brick chimney
weighing over 3,000 lbs. — and does it more
economically, safely and efficiently. Furthermore,
the thin wall of special high temperature insulation
in Pro -Jet chimneys provides the same insulating
value found in 23 inches of brick. So choose one
of our Pro -Jet chimney packages. They're Tess
expensive than a masonry chimney and they do
the same job. They're easier to install and they
can be completed in just a few hours. Ask about
Pro -Jets 25 year guarantee.
