Vanastra curlers rrzake playoffs
By Ashley Geddes
The Vanastra intermediate
curling team have made it to
the OCA playoffs after
winning in three curling
tournaments in the last three
weeks.
The OCA playoffs will be
held in Brampton March 15,
16 and 17 with eight provincial
finalist teams taking part.
Vanastra will play in a round-
robin series with Toronto,
Elmira, Niagara Falls,
Orillia, Weston, Kingston and
Gananoque. Team players for
Vanastra are: Don Mit-
chelmore, skip; Ron Chutter,
third; Ivan Lince, second;
Cliff Parker, lead.
Cliff Parker said Monday
he hoped the team would be
able to take part in the
playoffs. He said the players
are not sure if they can all get
the weekend off to go . to
Brampton. If one of the
players had to be replaced he
said another player could
play in his place but if more
than one can't make it the
team would have to back out
and the runners-up,
Chatham, would be allowed to
play instead.
"I hope we can all get off
Clinton Colts
down 3-1
The Clinton Colts Inter-
mediate C hockey team are
down three to one in games in
a playoff series with Mitchell.
They won .their first game
against Mitchell last Friday
night but they need three
more wins in a row to win the
best -of -seven series.
Two weeks ago, the team
was beaten first in Mitchell 6-
2 and then in Clinton 10-8.
Last Friday night, the team
had their first victory in
Mitchell winning 7-2. Derwin
Carter scored in the first
period with Dave McClure
and John Feeney assisting
tying the score 1-1.
Then in the second period
Rob Mayer put the Colts
ahead but Mitchell soon
answered the goal equalling
the score once again. From
o then on it was Clinton all the
way. Derwin Carter made it
3-2 with McClure and Mayer
assisting and then McClure
scored with Feeney assisting.
Going into the third period,
it was 4-2 for the Colts.
Harvey Carter picked up two
goals with Richard Carter
and Brad Morgan assisting
and Dave McClure scored the
final goal, with Derwin
Carter getting the assist.
Game four of the series was
in Clinton, but Mitchell
squeaked by 3-2. John Feeney
scored for the Colts with
Derwin Carter and Bud Boyes
assisting and then Dennis
Kelly got a goal with Feeney
and Boyes assisting.
The next game of the series
will be in Mitchell this
Friday, March 10
work," said Parker. "We're
hoping we 'ran stay tnnether
as a group."
Three weeks ago, the team
played a 13B series playoff
competition in Hanover with
Exeter, Goderich, Hanover
and Listowel. Vanastra won
both their games against
Exeter and Hanover.
In Seaforth two weeks ago,
the team, were the overall
winners in the 13A district
competition winning two
games straight. Thirteen
teams took part.
The team won two out of
three games in Chatham last
Sunday in a competition with
the winners of districts, 13, 14,
15and 16, representing
Southern Ontario. The game
agaisnt St. Thomas was won
4-3 and the game against
Chatham won 6-4. Elmira
beat Vanastra 9-4. Still the
team came out winners of the
competition.
In Brampton next week, the
team will play two teams the
first day, three teams the
second day and two teams the
last day. In the event of a tie
the teams would have a tie -
breaking game.
Mustangs out
After dominating the
Central Junior C League all
season, the Clinton Mustangs
have been eliminated.
The Walkerton Black
Hawks put them out of action
for good last Wednesday in
Walkerton by a score of 5-1.
This was the sixth game in a
best -of -seven series.
Walkerton won four of the
games, Clinton had one
victory and the other game
was tied.
The series was marked by
one controversial game. The
▪ game Sunday, March 4 went
into overtime as the score
was tied 3-3. In overtime
Clinton scored making it 4-3
but the goal was protested by
Walkerton because of a ruling
that overtime can only go one

ten-minute period and the
teams had gone past the
limit.
The OHA ruled that since
the score had been 3-3 at the
end of ten minutes, the
Mustangs did not win the
game. However, this was only
one of the games of the" series
and the Mustangs were
finally clearly edged out
losing four other games.

As usual, there is another
heavy week of Bonspiel ac-
tion to report. Last Wed-
nesday, the Bonspiel Com-
mittee hosted the Farmer's
Open sponsored by McGavin
Farm Machinery.
The 9 a.m. draw was won
by • Doug Rathwell from
Listowel and Ken Innes from
Brussels won second. Third
prize went to Seaforth's entry
skipped by .Bob
Fotheringham with Murray
Forbes, Bruce Coleman and
David St. • Marie* and con-
solation went to Mervin
Falconer from Vanastra.
In the 11:00 draw, Roy
Pennington from Teeswater
took first. Bob Wilson, with
Bill Lobb, Brian Lobb and
Rose Lovett came in for
second prize. Third went to
the Ross Veitch rink from
Brussels and consolation

with Dave Cornish, Don
Deighton and Ian McAllister.
Also on Wednesday, March
I st, a rink of Seaforth curlers
travleed to London to curl in
the London •Insurance
Agencies' Spiel at the
Ivanhoe. They came home
with the trophy as top win-
ners of the day. I understand
the competition was tough;
especially their first game.
I'm told it was a stacked rink
from London! The fellows
kept their minds on the game
however and managed a 15 - 1
win over them. Representing
Seaforth was Doug Rowcliffe,
Ken Cardno, John Moore and
Norm Bessie. The trophy can
be viewed at Eaton's
Insurance.
A mixed rink entered the
two-day Harriston Spiel and
came home with their prize
for the early draw. The rink,
skipped by Gerald Smith,
with Nancy Smith and
Gordon and Irma Pryce won
their two games on Saturday,
but lost the Sunday game. '
Also, on Saturday, a rink of
Seaforth ladies came out with
(
top honours at the Vanastra
Ladies Open. Winning top
prize for the day was Marg
Makins with her rink of
Roxanne Brown, Sharon
Wilson and Marg Allen.
On Sunday, the Silver
Tankard sub -division playoffs
were held in Wingham. Only
two clubs were entered so
Seaforth came up against
Goderich. In this double-
entl-y event Seaforth was
represented by skip Bill
Campbell, with Doug
Rowcliffe , Gordon Pryce and
Neil Dolmage; and by skip
Bob Wilson with Don
Trremeer Bill Fleming and
Bill Lobb. The Seaforth rinks
lost 14 - 13 to the Goderich
rinks skipped by Jerry
Walters and Cam Bogie.
Some of the playoff games
have been held for the second
draw. I don't have a complete
list but I understand Bruce
Coleman's rink has won the
Mixed Draw. I hope to be able
to give you a complete list of
winners and their teams at
the end of the season.
