Society met to discuss plans for the upcoming c4,mpaign
during Cancer Month in April. (News -Record photo by

19,000daffodils to carpet
Huron for society drive
Huron County is about to be
buried in daffodils. Six
thousand blossoms will be
brought to Clinton to be sold
as part of the Huron County
Canadian Cancer Society's
campaign drive. • Another
6,000 of the flowers will be
sold in Goderich and 7,000 in
Exeter.
The flowers will go on sale
Friday, March 31 in Clinton.
For $2 the buyer can win the
heart of his sweetheart,
mother or sister by presen-
ting them with a bouquet of 10
of the yellow posies. At the
same time the money will go
toward fighting cancer.
Last year the Huron County
unit had a successful year
raising over •$50,000. The
campaign raised 823,000 and
827,000 was donated. This
year the target for the unit is
$40,200 with $6,800 set as a
goal for Clinton.
April will be Cancer Month
all over Canada. The fund-
raising target for the whole of
Canada for 1978 has been set
at 827 million.
The Huron County Unit held
a meeting at the Wesley -
Willis United church in
Clinton February 27 to
discuss the plans for the
upcoming campaign. Several
of the 25 members who at-
tended had been at the CCS
conference in Toronto
January 21 and 22 and they
had new suggestions for
campaign programs. A flag -
raising ceremony to kick off
the campaign and bicycle and
walking marathons to raise
money were suggested.
It was pointed out that rural
canvassing is especially
important in Huron County as
one-third of the homes are
located in rural areas.
The motto for the society is
"fellow fighters for the battle
of life," said Helen Davies,
chairman of the meeting.
Funds raised are used for
research, supplies, service
and transportation of cancer
patients.
Clinton Brownies hold thinking day
On Wednesday February
22, the 2nd Clinton Brownie
Pack had a party. It was Lord
and Lady Baden Powell's
birthday.
We were studying Brownies
in Scotland, and we tried
some food from Scotland and
made a collage about
Scotland. Some Brownies
brought interesting things
from Scotland.
We ended our party with
the Brownie prayer. -By

Horticultural Society plan Rose Nighc
The Clinton Horticultural
Society, at their monthly
meeting on February 22
learned that the year books
will be given out at the March
22 meeting in the Clinton
Town Hall.
Mrs. Durst also reminded
the group that the March
meeting will be Rose Night
and the guest speaker will be
Rev. Stinson of Fordwich.
Rev. Stinson is well-known
and very knowledgeable
about roses and he also has a
beautiful slide presentation.
Mrs. Davies showed slides
at the meeting, and
illustrated all the wonderful
ways that the cancer society
is helping patients with
cancer.
The group then went
cruising down Canada's west
coast with the Powells and it
was a delightful trip. It was
easily seen that the beauty of
Canada is surely without
comparison.
Mr. Powell's father worked
over this route many years
ago and it was for this reason
that the Powells were anxious
to retreat these miles into all
the little inlets.
They travelled by train to
Vancouver, through all the
magnificent mountains, then
took a small plane to Ocean
Falls and met Captain Oliver
Howard who is in charge of
the mission boat,
44
Th
e
Crosby." The boat is well
equipped but small and room
is at a premium with the crew
and perhaps 20 travellers.
Meals were bountiful and
good and everyone was kind
and helpful.
"The Crosby" carried a
motor boat as it was not
possible for the larger boat to
enter many of the inlets. Most
of the places on call have
been busy centres with a
great many buildings, but
now most are in charge of
lonely caretakers and little
work being done. A floating
store, well equipped, supplied
the needs of these isolated
people as well as passing
boats.
The Powells were 10 days
on the boat and want to go
back and this time they will
know where to look for extra
beauty.
Following their presen-
tation, Miss Marquis moved a
vote of thanks to Mr. and Mrs.
Powell for sharing with the
beauty and interest with the
Horticultural Society.
Mrs. Williams explained
that she has already rounded
up work power, including
some men this year for all the
many public flower gardens.
The society is looking for-
ward to excellent displays
this year.
