Back
Back from an enjoyable
week's holiday in Valadero,
Cuba are Mrs. Art Coombs
RR 5 Clinton, and her
daughter, Gail an Air Canada
Supervisor in Toronto. While
there they stayed at the Hotel
Kawama, an elegant old
structure built in a semi-
circle around a fountain and
reminiscent of the Spanish
influence.
In a country where we are
learning to live with chronic
unemployment, the Coombs
found just the opposite in
Cuba - no employment and a
12-14 hour working' day. One
observation on the food was
little if any chocolate or
candy, but an abundance of
fresh fruit.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill McLeod
and children, John and Donna
of Ontario Street and Mrs.
May McLeod motored last
Friday to spend the weekend
with the latter's daughter,
Mrs. Roberta Clements of
Owen Sound.

At their regular meeting
last Friday, the Over Fifty
Club at Wesley -Willis church
decided that they would with-
draw their meeting on March
3 in favour of the World Day
of Prayer meeting at the
Presbyterian Church.
They also planned that the
next week on March 10 they
would have a hospital party
with all donating to the
Clinton Hospital Auxiliary. It
is hoped for fair weather and
a good turnout on that day.

Stuck in the middle
by Shelley McPhee
Can you imagine 1,000's, maybe even millions of
aggressive insects invading the land, killing the crops,
animals and humans along their path, disturbing the
complete balance of nature and becoming a nearly in-
destructable force that could possibly take over the
continent.
No this isn't a plot for a new horror movie, but I must
admit that I've seen enough of them to have in the back of
my mind the faint possibility that such a wierd change of
events could occur.
Bees, ants, spiders, reptiles and even an occasional
earwig has made it into screen writers' plots and they
become another science fiction tale of men's continuous
battle with nature.
But the strange thing about science fiction is that it
sometimes comes true. Just think that in the 1800's
highly imaginative authors were writing science fiction
tales or man landing on the moon or the world becoming
overtaken by machinery.
It is a fact that some of today's science fiction is bound
to become tomorrow's future and maybe this will be true.
Who are we to say that insects won't take over mankind
as the next civilization when poisons and pesticides
become useless against these creatures?
The power and intelligence of insects is now a
documented fact and it is also evident that they cannot be
killed by the same pesticides that were used years ago.
The insects, or bees anyway may be coming closer to
this future. Already killer bees have migrated north
through South America and are now some 3,700 miles
from the United States. Entomologists say that if the
bees continue their trek of 200 miles a year, they may
reach America by 1995.
Presently the U.S. Department of Agriculture is giving
grants to the study of these bees and possible control
before they reach the northern hemisphere.
As for their numbers, the African queen bees are now
mating with honey bees, producing bees that display
aggressive behaviour and have the wide-ranging
migratory patterns of the African bees.
The future of the land being infested by bees or other
insects may not be too far away in the future. It may be
futile, but for some peace of mind I'm going to start
manning myself with a swatter and a can of Raid.
That's snow joke. Ruth McClean of 18 Shipley St. in
Clinton took time to shovel her walk Monday after
working all day at the hospital. (News -Record photo by

Can the Family Court make
orders respecting the care and
custody of children?
Yes, however the
jurisdiction of the court to
make an award as to custody
under the Deserted Wives and
Children's Maintenance Act is
restricted to where a financial
award has been made. Since
only wives can apply for
maintenance under this Act,
only wives can be awarded
custody. If a judge decides the
husband should have custody,
then he will so indicate with
reasons but no maintenanceor
custody order is made ,in his
favour.
Most of this will be radically
changed by the proposed
Family Law Reform Act,
whereby it will be possible for
either spouse to apply for
maintenance and therefore
custody of the children as
well.

What is the scope of punish-
ment that may be handed
down by the Family Court in
respect to Juvenile offenders?
The juvenile could be en-
trusted to the care of a
probation officer or "other
suitable person". The child
could be placed in its own
home or a suitable foster
home subject to the super-
vision of a probation officer
and the further order of the
court. The child could be
committed to an "industrial or
training school" or be en-
trusted to the care of a
Children's Aid Society.
Finally, the Family Court
judge can impose "such
further or other conditions as
may be deemed advisable".
Under this latter jurisdic-
tion, some judges have been
quite innovative and have
ordered that juveniles un-
dertake various community
projects in lieu of more
traditional punishment.

Rather than convict an
offender, Judges will often
hand down a stern warning
and give the person charged
an absolute discharge. What
are the implications of this?
An absolute discharge
means that the accused has
been found guilty of the
charge but that he has not
been convicted of the charge.
The accused does not have a
criminal record as such, but
while there has been no
conviction recorded or
registered by the court, the
court will have registered a
record of the discharge.
The Criminal Records Act
treats the discharge the same
as a conviction and in this
sense, it will be necessary for
an accused person to apply for
a pardon one year from the
date of the discharge.
