COLOR AND ELEGANCE—The bride splurges with
color and pattern to highlight her new china and crys-
tal. Lenox's Interlude fine china has a terra cotta and
blue color scheme, complemented by linens in the
same warm tones. Hand -blown Evening Star crystal,
also from Lenox, gives sparkle and eleganceto the
setting. A bowl of fresh flowers adds warmth.

To avoid collecting
myriads of toasters or white
elephants—chosen by
well-meaning friends and rel-
atives as wedding gifts—the
wise bride-to-be will make a
visit to a wedding gift registry
a must.
A free service Offered by
virtually all department, gift
and jewelry stores, the regis-
try records the bride's pref-
erences in tableware, kitchen
items, and other furnishings
for her new home.
Betsy Abbott, registry
consultant at B. Altman and
Company in New York ex-
plains, "We give advice to
brides on color schemes, pat-
terns, and design trends. We
also help friends and rela-
tives who are not familiar
with the bride's tastes escape
the time-consuming search
through the store to find the
'right' gift."
In coordinating 'china,
crystal, and silver choices,
the registry is particularly
valuable, according to Ar-
lene Hirst, design consultant
for 'Lenox, whose fine china
is registered for by more
brides than any other firm.
"We design such a wide
variety of patterns, shapes
and colors that the profes-
sional advice of the consul-
tant is invaluable in helping
brides choose Lenox styles
to suit their tastes," she said.
Choose china first
"China, because of it4 im-
portance on the table, is
usually selected first: crystal
and silver are then chosen.
Color. pattern. and lifestyle
are key factors today in as-
sembling a coordinated look
in table fashions that will last
for years." Ms. Hirst said.
In home entertaining, the
successful hostess is rated
not only by the menu she
prepares but by the tableset-
ting she creates.
With the dramatic use of
color in linens and
accessories -and with im-
aginative centerpieces—she
can create a background for
her china and crystal that
truly reflects her personal-
ity," said Ms. Hirst.
In choosing her china and
crystal. color is important.
the Lenox designer advised.
In new dinnerware designs.
there are rich chocolate
browns. bold terra cottas,
and natural blues. In crystal.
gold. green, blue. and brown
are popular casual colors.
Fine china patterns also
range from the traditional
floral sprays, etched gold
bands, and oriental motifs to
.the contemporary white -
on -white and simple
platinum banded designs.
And in crystal, there are
graceful new flared stemware
shapes, over -sized wane'
glasses, and contemporary
decanters and table acces-
sories.
Helpful hints
By keeping abreast of
trends in tableware design,
the wedding gift consultant
offers brides up-to-the-
minute advice, said the
Lenox consultant.. Here are
the tips she offers in using the
registry:
• Register as soon after
your engagement as
possible—at least several
months before the wedding.
The closer you get to your
wedding date, the busier you
will be. Often, relatives and
friends also consult the regis-
try to buy engagement gifts.
• Mother, members of the
bridal party, and close
friends will help spread the
name of the store where you
are registered. It is best to
select one store—
departme.nt stores with
branches usually coordinate
the information within their
chains. The consultant keeps
up-to-date records as gifts
are purchased.
• Most brides register their
choices for fine china, crys-
tal, and silver, but it is also
advisable to register for
casual tableware items. You
are not obligated to make a
purchase at the store where
you register.
• Register for the number
of place settings that will fit
your lifestyle. You can start
with as'little as two and go up
to ten or twelve. Buffet place
' settings consist of three
pieces: a dinner plate, cup
and saucer.
Complete place settings
also include the salad arid
bread and butter plates, a
total of five pieces which you
would use for entertaining.
• Lenox china and crystal
patterns are available in
"open stock." You can con-
tinue toadd pieces to your set
and build a full service as
long as the pattern is made.
