The colorful history
of wed day_ white
Must every bride be mar-
ried in white'' There are, of
course, no steadfast, unyield-
ing rules regarding the selec-
tion of color for the wedding
dress: one of the greatest
pleasures the modern bride
enjoys is the knowledge that
she is absolutely free to plan
her wedding as she sees fit,
with no "musts" other than
the marriage license itself to
hinder her creativity!
Yet every woman planning
to marry might he interested
, to know a little more about
the tradition of bridal white
before she makes a decision
on her wedding attire.
From ancient times. white
has been a symbol of purity
and joy to all nations, all cul-
tures. The Orientals and the
people of India worshipped
white animals. and ancient
Romans donned white robes
for all joyous occasions.
This is not to say that white
was always the color con-
nected with matrimony. The
ancient Roman brides were
covered from head to toe in
orange -colored veils.
And for hundreds of years
European brides went to
altar dressed in red! This was
probably a carry-over from
the Chinese custom of wear-
ing red as a symbol of gaiety.
The first white wedding
gown (in the Western tradi-
tion of wedding attire) was
worn by Anne of Brittany
when she married Louis XII
in 1499. Her gown of pure
white set the trend in Europe.
which soon became the stan-
dard for all bridal drets in
Europe and the Aniericas.' ^
If a bride chooses to wear
purest white on her wedding
day. this information will en-
hance the meaning of her
color selection. However. it
is quite acceptable—even
traditional—fcrr irides to
choose gowns in shades of
ivory. candlelight, blush pink
or ice blue. or white gowns
.with an accent of color.
Every little bit helps when ..
Budgeting" for two
Every little bit helps when
it comes to balancing the
budget. And if you're newly
married, you're no doubt
feeling the pinch of rising
costs on everyday neces-
sities as well as on the "big"
things you need for your new
life together.
The beauty experts at
Helene Curtis suggest that
you watch your personal care
spending carefully so that
you can put more of your dol-
lars towards the other things
the two of you will share.
For instance, take the time
to comparison shop for per-
sonal items. You'll be sur-
prised at the differences in
price. And you won't have to
purchase poor quality mer-
chandise in order to save.
There are major brand-name
items available, such as the
Suave line of personal care
products, that offer quality as
well as an economical price.
Check several stores and
compare prices. Don't forget
to look on the grocery store
shelves for your grooming
needs. They can often supply
the kind of product you want
and at a good price. A careful
search of newspapers will
produce cents -off coupons
that can save you even more.
Your best buys are the
large economy sizes, espe-
cially since now that there
are two of you, you'll need
more of everything. Suave
Balsam & Protein Shampoo
and Conditioner are just the
kind of products you should
be looking for. They're per-
fect for both men and women
since they heave every hair
type healthy, shiny and easy
to manage.
•
Another way to share=
and -save is with anti-
perspirants. Again, you
should shop for a quality
name brand, that offers the
kind of protection you need
at the savings you deserve.
Hand creams, body lo-
tions, shaving creams and
razor blades are other per-
sonal care items that can be
bought -for -two. One thing
about toothpaste—it's not
0
0
worth breaking up a mamage
over: If he's a "squeezer"
and you're a "roller," buy
two!
Every young couple
should start off their mar-
riage right, by developing
sound money -managing
•
habits that will stay with
_them throughout their lives
together. One of the least
noticed but easiest ways is by
sharing your everyday per-
sonal care items. And buying
the best quality at the most
economical price.
