Through the ather weeklies
The Wingham Town
Council has decided that the
downtown business section
will get a strip of ornamental
Stone paving, the Wingham
Advance -Times reported in
last week's edition.
The cost of the ornamental
stone could run as high as
$20,000 and rather than be
assessed as a special business
tax, the council ha,s decided
that it will be 'added to the
town's share of the project.
Business persons along the
Main Street also asked that
the street lights be moved
back to the building line along
with the ornamental stone,
however, council decided that
the lights will stay where they
are.
Kincardine Townshjp
Councillor John Marriott may
be asked to resign or will be
replaced unless he starts
responding to his call of duty.
The Kincardine News
reported that the township
council learned that Coun-
cillor Marriott has not at-
tended a regularly scheduled
meeting since September
1977.
.While he attended 12
meetings last year, he had not
been in council for a meeting
within the past four months.
Reeve Alvin Thompson
noted that if he didn't want to
come to council meetings, all
he has to do is send in a letter
of resignation. He also noted
that there is a by-law stating
that if a councillor misses
three consecutive meetings
he may be replaced.
It was noted that two letters
have been sent to Councillor
Marriott and he has been
visited by councillors as well,
but there has been no reply.
The Brussels Post reported
that the village was without
water and telephones last
Thursday after village em-
ployees were given the wrong
location by Bell Canada to dig
and repair a broken water
pipe. They cut the telephone
line while working on the
pipe.
The water was shut off for
three to four hours and came
back on in time for supper on
Thursdaynight.
Lucknow had their water
problems last week as well.
The Lucknow Sentinel
reported that the Lucknow
'standpipe overflowed spilling
about 100,000 gallons of water
which formed a cascade of ice
down the side of the tower.
The signal to shut off the
pumps was short-circuited by
water in a man hole so when
the water in the standpipe
reached a certain level, it
overflowed rather than shut-
off. The pumps are capable of
pumping 340 gallons a
minute.
The pumps had to be shut
off and operated by hand
controls until Bell Canada
repaired the cable.
The Mitchell Advocate and
The Huron Expositor proudly
announced that two of the
towns' skaters, Lori Baier of
Mitchell and Lloyd Eisler of
Seaforth came home with
silver medals in the junior
pairs competition at the
recent national figure skating
championships in Victoria,
B.C.
The pair were then chosen
to go to the world junior finals
in Megeve, France, This is
unusual since Canada only
sends one pair to the finals.
The world championships
are'scheduled for March 21-26
and the pair are training for it
now.
The Listowel Banner an-
nounced that the Listowel
Cradle Club is going to be
making a major purchase for
the Listowel Memorial
Hospital.
The club plans to buy a
$5,170 defibrul,ator and heart
monitoring machine which is
badly needed for the
hospital's • emergency
department.

spent 'two marvellous weeks
in Jamaica, near Montego
Bay recently. They had lovely
warm weather. They took one
tour to Dunn's River Falls
where the scenery was very
beautiful. There were several
couples from this area
holidaying there.
Bill and Helen Taylor have
returned from a vacation in
southern Texas. They visited
many of the well-known
centres. including San
'Antonio, Laredo, Corpus
Christi, Brownsville, South
Padre Island, etc.
George Whittaker had a
very painful accident on
Sunday, when he broke his leg
while skating. It will be in a
cast for several weeks.
Bev and Shirley Hill spent a
pleasant two weeks camping,
mostly in Brownsville, Texas,
with trips to South Padre
Island, Mexico, etc. and with
stopovers at Nashville and
Windsor on the way home.

visited with them for a few
days in Brownsville.

The Exeter -Times
Advocate reported that the
town council is questionning
the proposed county -wise
police system, its costs and
effects.
Dr. Gary Balsdon noted
that a letter that had
estimated the start up cost of
the system at $70,000 was a
"snow job".
He also noted that while
'four new jobs would be
created in the central location
at. Goderich, Exeter would
lose two jobs.
It was also felt that with
Goderich as the central
location, it wasn't practical
for Exeter and area residents
to call Goderich to get in
touch with the Exeter police.
One councillor noted that
Baldson might be under the
impression that the four
Huron municipalities would
have to help Goderich pay for
the renovations to their police
station to house the com-
munication equipment and he
suggested that this is not the
case.
However, Councillor Derry
Boyle noted, "If ' I know
Goderich, we'll all be
paying."
The St. Marys Journal -
Argus reported that the St.
Marys Agricultural Society
has received a $1,000 Wintario
grant towards the Flats
washroom building.
Goderich is making at-
tempts to ensure the
preservation of The Square
and the Goderich Signal Star
reported that the
Businessmen's Association
plans to hold a public meeting
on February 16 to discuss the
future plans to enhance the
downtown shopping core.
It was noted that architect
Nick Hill has been hired to
prepare a study on the ar-
chitecture of The Square with
proposals on its preservation.
The study was completed late
in 1977,
