The Bull Frog Chorus.
The bull frogs they are croaking,
Down in 'Pickard's morass,
You can hear the rascals joking
Amid the reeds and grass,
And if you stand a mutute
To listen on the dump,
To guy you they'll begin it
With a‘White man, you're a chump,
You're a (thump, chtunp, chump ! chump ! !
chump ! ! chump ! !II
0, Christopher Columbus, you're a chump !
We sent our best spring poet,
To catch their gentle song,
As they croakulabulated
O'er the bottoms all along ;
He went away quite gladly,
And he mounted on a stump :
Till a bull frog roared out madly,
"Oh poet, you're a chump !
Yesdre a chianti, chump, chump I chump• ! !
chump !! ! chump ! 111
Oh, Kerestopher Ko-lumbne you're. a
chump !
Monday evening the sky was clear,
And our reporter to the pond did go,
To catch the strains, to the ladies so dear,
As they strut About with a fishing goad ;
Upon the banks he did distend
The openiog ode to hear,
When suddenly a bull frog croaked,
"Reporter, old chap, don't you jeer,
For you're a chump, chump, chump I
chump!! ehump ! chump I!!
Ph, Kortaistopher Kedumbue you're a

Enterprising.,
A couple of obscure hut extremely egotis-
tical persoos, who weekly sponge a copy of
our piper, in order that they may finnish
the local news of Exeter to newspespers
throughout the country, and at 'the same
time squeeze in a few locals advertising their
business, liave our deep sympathy in their
enterprise. We give them credits for the
scheme; it is a novel way of obtaining free
adlyertising. We presume the newspapers
to whieli sent, deem the correspondence a
great favor.
Black not.
The St. Thomas journal has the following:
--"The disease known as the black knot,
which has destroyed most of the plum trees
in this section has now taken hold of the
cherry trees and also attacked the pear
trees. Unless steps are taken to eradicate
the disease the elterry and pear trees will
also be destroyed. An Act of Parliament
provides for the punishment of parties who
neglect to take steps to eradicate the disease,
and some one should be appointed to see
that the law is carried out.

Another League.
It is proposed. to form a Western amateur
base ball league for the year 1887, compos-
ed of St. Marys, Listowel, Exeter, SeafOrth,
Clinton, ancl Mitchell. A championship
emblem will be contested for, the club win-
ning the championship for three years to
become its owners. As far as winning the
emblem is concerned, Exeter, would be un-
doubtedly,' certain of that, beit as the sports
have decided upon lacrosse, we fear both
leagues—the one spoken of last year and
the above --will have to form without an

Bad Roads.
Now that the frost is out of the ground.,
we believe it is the duty of pathanaatera
throughout the townships in the vicinity,
to repair all culverts ana put the roads in
proper shape. Many of the culverts are
badly broken and the roads are very rough,
with deep holes every few rods, caused. -by
the frost remaining in one part of the road
longer than another. The work of repair -
Mg and levelling would reqnire but little
Italie, and would repay the farmers by the
1 meing of vehicles, which are at present in-
jurceby being tossed about while passing

A Partial Disclosure.
On Friday last, while Mr. Robt. Hodgins,
who resides about two miles west of Credi-
ton, was working about his barn, he disa
covered several papers upon the' lay. He
picked them up, and they were carried to
the house. Having had a sale a few days
previous, and, ass Mr. H. Eillser was the
'auctiOneer,g.r. Hodgiis ituojediately con-
cluded that the papers belonged' 46
Next day they were taken to
Crediton, and, after an examination'it was
found that the papers belonged to Mr. D.
•Steinbach, of Zurich. Mr. Steinbach was
communicated with, and he attestedthat
the papers belonged to him, and that they
had been stolen from the safe in his store on
the 4th of March, the night of robbery.
The supposition is, that the papers found,
had fallen from some one's pocket, while
lyine upon the hay. This is confierned to a
certain extent by several of the neighbors,
who say they saw three tramps pass South
several mornings previous to making the
discovery. There were also indications of
persons having slept where the papers were
found. •

Rowdyism.
The youths of our village and some who
lay claim to the title Of young men, still
continue their pernicious conduct, during
the hours which respectable people occupy
in slumber. On Saturday night or early
Sunday morning three persons, mildly put•
ting it ---mono maniacs—perpetrated a mean
and despicable trick upon several of. oar
citizens. Passing north along Main street,
theil first act was to seize a lantern which
hong near the excavation made for the
Oildfellow's Temple, lighting the way for
the wary pedestrian, and after casting it
into the water and mud, pelted it with
brieke in order to render it useless. They
next placed several large planks which are
piled near by, across the sidewalk, their in-
tention evidently being to cause sonic one
11, stumble and fall into the cellar. Mr.
Elston's fence also suffered, nearly every
other picket being torn off or broken.

The Hunt Club.
The newly organized hunt club bad ir'S
first outing on Monday. The opening prae•
•'fie° was that of hurdle jumping, in which a
number participated. The hurdles were
placed at the height of two feet, and after
allhaving successfully passed over, the.
hurdles were raised another foot, Seedeal
of the more experienced riders cleared the
hurdles at the increased height, -while many See
found great difficulty in making the attetn,pt:

rapid speed, were so ove.rearne with excite-
ment, no doubt caused hy the extreme

All present stood with gaping inouths and
abated breath, as the candidates approached
, the leaping point. One of the two was
thrown forward on his horse's neck, and by
O repeat of action cast backwards, graceful-
ly descending over the equine's caudal ap
pendage to the ground, sustaining but slight
injury. The other, a more ' tatddy person
age, was thrown about four yards; and over
a barb -wire fence, caused, na doubt, by the
animal making a bolt upon reaching the
hurdle. Being sort of an acrobat, he alight-
ed on his feet, and therefore sustained no
injury, although his christie stiff was bacll
.crushed. The next meeting -will take
place before the 24th of Maya -when it is
hoped there will be a full attenaance. '
