Figure skating club news
This past Saturday Shawn
Lester passed the beginner's
badge and the stroking
badge. Congratulations,
Shawn.
The Canadian Figure
Skating Championships
competition was held this
past weekend in Victoria, B.
C. The ultimate dream of a
competitive skater is to be
entered in "the Canadians".
Every competitor puts a
great deal of time and' effort
into reaching that pinnacle.
It isn't always the rich
man's son or daughter that
makes it that far either. Some
who have reached those
heights have scrimped and
saved in other areas of their
life in order to provide the
resources for lessons and
travel.
Several young people from
Western Ontario went to the
Canadians. Lorri and Sherri
Baier of Mitchell; Lloyd
Eisler, Seaforth; Kevin
Hicks, Windsor; Blaine
Moore and Carol Wheeler,,
Wingha-m plus others.
Aha, you say, where's
Clinton? Well, we do have
some talented skaters who
skate eight hours a week with
our club and about four hours
at Vanastra. That's 12 hours a
week at the most. If they
started now skating 40 hours
a week for a year they could
possibly have a good chance
next year of being in the
winning circle of the sectional
competitions which lead up to
the Canadians. However, we
think they're skating quite
well for a small club like ours
and we're proud of them!
No doubt the above men-
tioned people do skate at least
40 hours 'a week. Although the
Baier sisters' home is Mit-
chell, they skate with the
Preston club. Same for the
Eisler boy whose home is
Seaforth.
Small town skating clubs
have to decide whether to
spend their time developing
the skills of the skaters and
preparing them for com-
petition or some clubs feel the
time is better spent in
presenting a big ice carnival
each year.
This year is Mitchell's
club's 25th anniversary and
as a special attraction at their
ice show coming up next
week, they will have as their
guest skaters, Mitchell's own
Baier sisters and their par-
tners.
In the "Canadians", 14 -
year -old Lorri Baier came
first in novice ladies' and
second with partner Lloyd
Eisler, Seaforth in junior
pairs. 15 -year-old Sherri
Baier came first with her
partner Robin Cowan of
Waterloo in senior pairs.
That's a very impressive
guest list and home grown at
that. I'll bet the whole town
goes out to meet them.
For this year anyway, the
Clinton club will have to be
satisfied with the dream of
success at our interclub
competition on March 5 at
Go,derich. As well as the
teams mentioned in last
week's column another team
has also been entered in the
junior men's free style
competition. They are Robert
Dupee, Steven Preszcator
and Jim Crawford. Best of
luck, boys, we're delighted to
have you representing the
boys of our club.
In the junior ladies' free
style category, Erica Lyons
has withdrawn and Judy
Johnston will skate in her
place.
Seaforth curling news
A mixed rink from the
Seaforth Curling Club won the
Spinrite trophy in Listowel on
Saturday. Curling in the spiel
were Bill Campbell, Gwen
Patterson, John Patterson
and Irma Pryce.
The Junior Curlers held a
very successful Fun Day on
Sunday at the Club. They
played two six -end games.
The first game included a
variety of changes that added
zo the fun.
The second end of the game
was skipped by the leads; the
fourth end saw the skips
switch to their opposition's
team; and the sixth end was
played with no sweeping
allowed. The second game of
the afternoon was a serious
game and all scores were
very close.
Winning first prize, which
had been . donated by the
Deightons, was the team
skipped by Dick Robinson,
with Vicki Ste. Marie, Brad
Rice and Peter Underwood.
Second prize went to David
Underwood with Susan
Primeau, Steve Hildebrand
and Dave Vincent. Third

-Marie, with Noreen Primeau

Rimmer.

Resource Centre
On Thursday, February 2,
there was a good turnout for
the publit—rrreeting. Mr. Arch
Andrews, M.S.W., from the
Huron Centre for Children
and Youth, was the guest
speaker. Many people from
the community came out for
the seminar on "Child
Rearing and the Importance
of the Family", also at-
tending were members of the
steering committee and staff
of the Resource Centre.
Following the presentation
by Mr. Andrews, there was an
open discussion about the
everyday problems of child
rearing. A babysitting ser-
vice was provided for this
event.
This Thursday, February 9,
there will be no public
meeting as staff and board
members meet. On Thursday
February 16th, Mr. John
Penn, director of Family and
Children's Services, will

Exercise and
nutrition club
Vanastra's new exercise
and nutrition club held its
second meeting on Monday,
January 30. It was decided
that the club be called the
Vanastra Calorie Counters.
Six new members were
welcomed. The club's format
is broken down into two parts.
Every Monday night at 7 p.m.
the. group assembles for
"weigh-in" and a 45 minute
discussion on nutrition. Last
week the club discussed
Canada's Food Guide and its
relation to meal planning.
Next week they will begin the
program in earnest with a
discussion of "food diaries"
and the cause and effect
factors found in obesity. The
Vanastra Calorie Counters
feel that a properly balanced
diet is just as important as
exercise.
The remainder of the
weekly meetings is devoted to
physical fitness. Yoga is
incorporated into the regular
exercise program. Because of
the demand for these exer-
cises, they have begun a
Wednesday Morning Exer-
cise Club at the Church from
10-11 a.m.
Please feel free to attend
and babysitting services are
provided. The Club is very
proud of the lively interest
and determination shown by
the members and with these
qualities on their side the
group will be assured of
success in their goals.

discussed.
Various activities' such a§
cards, games, and listening to
music occupied the teens
until 9 p.m. Everyone then
went to the arena here at
Vanastra for free skating
until 10 p.m. The teens would
like to thank Mr. Fred Moore

The Teen Club is looking for

Day Nursery
In January, the Tucker -
smith Day Nursery had three
n'ew registrations which
brings the enrolment up to 28.
At the present time, there is
15 to 17 children attending the
Day Nursery each day. These
children come from quite a
wide area. There is one child
enrolled from McKillop
Township, three from
Bayfield, two from Hullett
Township, two from Clinton,
one from Goderich Township
and two from Seaforth.
The remaining 17 attend
from Tuckersmith Township
Including Vanastra. In the
past, children have enrolled
from Goderich, Blyth,, Hay
Township, Stanley Township,
Colborne Township, Usborne
Township and Hensall.
Seven of the children are
now taking part in swimming
lessons once a week in the
indoor pool located in the
Recreation Centre. The
lessons held each Wednesday
morning at 11 a.m. help to
remove a child's fear of water
and teach him to respect it.
All the children use water -
wings while in the pool. A
child who is apprehensive at
first soon gains confidence
and enjoys his, time in the
wa-ter and looks forward to

his next lesson when he can
once again go swimming with
his friends.
Some of the children have
become 'so adapted to the
water that they can jump in
off the side or even go off the
diving board into the pool.
Swimming is such an ex-
cellent exercise and
especially good for co-
ordination.
Anyone requiring in-
formation about the Day
Nursery may call 482-7647 or
drop in for a visit to see us in
action ant the Vanastra
