Maurice Maguire, 56, 118 North St., Clinton, pulled out of a driveway on Beech Street and didn't see another vehicle driven by Mrs. Claire Parker, 29, of 353 James Street, Clinton, travelling north along the street. Damage to the Maguire vehicle was set at $350 and $600 in damages was received to the Parker vehicle. A car driven by Adrianna M. Kroesen, 67, of 56• Shipley St., Clinton, received $400 in damages; a car driven by Nellie Hgodgendoorn, 24, of 196 Queen St., Clinton, received $200 and a parked car owned • by Grant MacLean; of RR 2 Kippen, received $200 in damages when the three were involved in an accident on Rattenbury Street on Janl.lary 23. Mr. and Mrs. Brian Craig of Guelph spent the weekend at their home here. Don't forget the contest for a design or ensigna to be used for Auburn's 125th birthday party in 1979. Adults may enter also.. • Mr. and Mrs, Harold Jardin, Darryl and Michael of Belgrave visited last Sunday with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Jardin and grand- mother, Mrs. Elva Straughan. U.C.W. The United Church Women of Auburn Knox United Church held their general meeting on January 25 at 2 p.m. in the Sunday school room of the church. The meeting was on the theme World Outreach and Mission with Mrs. Ernest Durnin the convenor. Unit I were in charge of devotions with Mrs. Maurice Bean presiding. She chose a worship service from Jean Vanier's book "Be not Afraid" on the theme "Share Together". The Karsh movement which Vanier founded is to help mentally disturbed men. Instead of putting them in large institutions, such in- dividuals are helped more in home -like places, and there are now some 50 of these, one being at Richmond Hill. The main purpose - is best described thus "the com- munity for me" to "me for the community". The hymn, Blest Be the Tie that Binds, was sung' with Mrs. Thomas Cunningham as pianist. Mts. Elliott Lapp received the offering which was dedicated by singing, We give Thee, but Thine Own. Mrs. Thomas Cunningham played a piano solo. The Reverend Earl St. Jean showed a film strip on "Bread, Laughter and Dignity" introducing the World Outreach program and also gave a talk on this subject. Mrs. Ernest Durnin had several posters on World Outreach work, one depicting hpw the Mission dollar is spent. She also prepared a list of bale and layette needs and areas where they are sent.' President Mrs. Donald Haines took charge of the business period and opened with prayer. The financial report was given by the treasurer Mrs. Oliver Anderson. Other reports were presented by Mrs. Thomas Jardin on the Flower Fun- d "and Mrs. Beth Lansing on kitchen supplies. The members approved a donation of $50 to support Alma College and February 17 was set as the date for the annual Family Night. Anyone having used Christmas cards is asked to leave them with Mrs. Frances Clark who has of- fered to send them where they can be used. It was announced that the World Day of Prayer service will be held on March 3 in St. Mark's Anglican. lurch with the Anglican Church Women in charge , Members reported having completed four quilts for the bale and one as a special project. Plans are being made to have a cantata presented at the Easter Thankoffering- a definite date will be set later. President, Mrs. Donald Haines thanked all those who had taken office in the newly formed units and wished them success in their .year's work ahead. The mizpah benediction was repeatea and a social time was enjoyed. Mrs. Ross Robinson and Mrs. John Durnin were hostesses. SOCIAL NEWS Winners at the weekly euchre parties held on Tuesday evening in the Community Memorial Hall were: novelty -Mrs. Warner Andrews; high lady -Mrs. Thomas Jardin; low lady - Mrs. James Glousher; high man- Kenneth McDougall; and low man- , Douglas Glousher. Everyone is welcome. The Auburn librarian, Mrs. Douglas Chamney requests all Huron County Library books be in by Saturday February II. The Coffee Timers held an enjoyable evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Anderson with Mrs. Greg Park as hostess. Constable Bill Wilson of the O.P.P. showed films and gave a talk. Plans were made to hold the next meeting in the Auburn Community Memorial Hall on February 6 at 8 p.m. when badminton will be played. Everyone is welcome. • LIONS CLUB Vice-president Lion Gordon Chamney was in charge of the Auburn and District Lion's Club meeting held last week in the Auburn Community Memorial Hall. Members of the Auburn • Women's Institute catered to the dinner which preceded the meeting. Constable Bill Wilson of the Goderich detachment of the O.P.P. was guest speaker and showed a good film on the .importance of wearing seat belts and gave some actual experiences which em- phasized this importance. He was presented with a ceramic beer stein which had been made by Bess Slater. -- Stephen Haggitt was ac- cepted into the Auburn and District Lions's Club. He was sponsored by Lion Clare Millian. The initiation rights were carried out by Guiding Lion Charles Shaw of Blyth. The Membership kit and pin was presented by first vice- president Lion, Gordon Chamney. The secretary Lion, Bob Ketchabaw gave the minutes which were adopted . on motion of Lion Bill Crawford. Lion Bill Crawford, chairman of activities, reported that another film night is being planned for the near future. Lions and their families are enjoying a sleigh ride set for January 29 at 1 p.m. with refreshments tb follow. It was announced that Lion Grant Chisholm will be guest speaker for Ladies' Night set for February 15. CHURCH NEWS Following the morning service, the congregation of Knox United Church enjoyed a lunch suppled by the ladies of the Church and this was followed by the annual meeting. The Reverend Earl St. Jean opened the meeting with scripture and prayer. The minutes were read by the church secretary Maurice Bean. The 'lissionary , and Service report was given by the treasurer, Mrs. Donald Haines who indicated an increase in givings by $200. A discussion followed as to how the Missionary money was spent by the United Church in Canada. A committee composed of Mrs. Donald , Haines, Ruurd Koopmans and Mrs. Earl St. Jean were named to make this a project and look into this matter. Elliott Lapp and Jack Armstrong moved that the Missionary and Service Fund objective be set at $2500. The treasurer Mrs. Kenneth McDougall pointed out that one of the biggest problems is late givings after the first of the new year, although the funds were appreciated. A motion was made that any late givings after the new year be credited to the new year. A letter is to be sent to the Reverend and Mrs. M. Roberts of 'Argentina thanking them for their contributions as they have continually supported the Auburn church since leaving this Charge. Reports were given of the United Church Women by Mrs. Ernest Durnin and Mrs. Ruurd Koopmans ; Flower Fund by Mrs. Thomas Jardin and Mrs. Dorothy Grange; Sunday school by Greg Hallam and David St. Jean; Junior Congregation- Mrs. Peter Verbeek and Mrs. Gerald McDowell; Youth Group Kim McDowell and Marilyn Wightman; Bible Study 'group -Maurice Bean reported on the groups study ' and format used. All reports were accepted. Others were invited to join the group meeting at the manse every Sunday at 10 a.m. Anniversary service bate has been set for October 15 with the Reverend Harold Snell and his son Peter as guest speakers. Donald Haines, clerk of session spoke of all the work that people did within the, congregation without any remuneration. A vote of thanks was extended to these members.
