Road crews worked double shifts last Thursday and Friday to clean up the snowfall from
the most recent storm. Although heavy snows and hurricane force winds crippled the rest
of southern Ontario, the storm spared the immediate Clinton area. Here Roy Pickhard of

Former Seaforth reeve and
Clinton native dies in London
William Nelson Ball
One of the community's
well-known natives, William
Nelson Ball died in University
Hospital, London on Wed-
nesday, January 25 following
a lengthy illness. He was in
his 68th year.
Mr. Ball was born and
raised in Clinton by Mr. and
Mrs. Nelson Ball. He was a
partner in the business, Ball
Bros., Clinton which later
became Ball -Macaulay in
Clinton and Seaforth. Mr.
Ball was also active in
municipal politics and served
on the Seaforth Town Council
as councillor from 1956 to 1958
and as reeve from 1959 to
1963.
He attended Clinton PulaRe
and the Clinton Di$frict
Collegiate Institute and
served in the Medical Corps
of the Royal Canadian Army
in Canada and overseas from

La Leche League meets
The La Leche League in
Huron County met last month
at the home of local leader,
Janis Bisback with 15
mothers and children
present. The weather con-
ditions resulted in the can-
cellation of December's
meeting and the regular
second Wednesday of the
month date was postponed
one week in January again,
due to the winter weather.
The discussion topic of this
meeting was nutrition and
weaning. Good nutrition is
important for the whole
family but is essential for a
pregnant or breastfeeding
mother. Contaminants and
toxins regarding breast-
feeding were discussed. It
was pointed out that the
nursing baby is not the sole
recipient of contaminants.
The whole enviornment has
been affected, and it is a
matter of weighing the risks
vs. the benefits.
Medical authorities con-
cerned with providing infants
with the best nutrition
available are convinced that
the hazards of commercially
prepared products are
greater - and breastfeeding
may be one way to delay the
introduction of these con-
taminants into our daily diet.
There are effective
measu-res a woman can take
for her own protection and"'
ultimately for her , own
family. One should limit the
amount of animal fat eaten
and avoid the consumption of
fresh water fish, for it has
been shown that fish are
sensitive to contamination.
During a period of breast
feeding or pregnancy it would
appear wise to avoid a rapid
weight loss, as such fat-
soluable toxins would be
released more rapidly when
dieting.
The next meeting of La
Leche League will be held in
Seraforth at 2 p.m., February
8 in the afternoon, at the
home of Mary Beuerman, 84
Market Street. The discussion
topic will be "The Advan-
tages of Breastfeeding".
This is the first meeting of
four part series to be held in
the Seaforth area. If you are
pregnant and would like more
information on the womanly
art of breastfeeding or
already enjoy being a nursing
couple - you're invited. If you
havn't started a family yet,
have older children, or are a
grandmother you are
welcome to attend our in-
formal meetings.
La Leche (pronounced Lay
*chay) League is a 20 -year-old
volunteer organization
devoted to giving information
and support to women who
want to breastfeed their
babies.
For more information
- about meetings or questions
about breastfeeding please
