Cheaper to leave'bus driving
to Board of Education
The Huron County Board of
Education learned recently
that it may be cheaper for the
county schools to use board
owned buses for field trips
than it is to hire a bus con-
tractor to do the driving. The .
board received a report on a
pilot project at Goderich
District Collegiate Institute
using a board owned surplus
bus for field trips rather than
the services of a bus con-
tractor.
The project was instituted
when the board purchased
new buses for use . in the
county. When the new
vehicles were purchased
some c board members felt
to use it. The bus was to be
driven by a teacher with
proper driving permits and
was to be maintained by the
board.
Lynn Meyers, head of the
physical education depart-
ment at the Goderich school,
told the board in a letter that
in the two month trial period
$454 had been saved. Meyers
said the bus had been driven
1,256 miles at a cost of $735.94.
He said the cost included
insurance premiums,
maintenance and safety
inspections. The same trips
by a bus contractor -would
have cost the board $1,189.30.
Meyers said the bus had
that the board may save. —been an asset to .the students
money by keeping the old at G.D.C.I. and had been used
buses for backup use rather by Robertson Memorial
than selling them. Public School in Goderich and
The board decided to keep Exeter Public School. The
one of the vehicles and leave board made no decision
it at G.D.C.I. to he used by it regarding future use of board
and any other school wishing owned surplus buses.
