The two-year-old barn on the farm of George Vivian, near Staffa collapsed during the storm. At least 12 cattle were killed in the incident. Engineers from the. Ministry of Agriculture and Food were scheduled to check the barn for possible errors in the design of the roof's truss The inistry shqwed some concern about the collapse since many similar barns have been built in the area in it -cent years_ The Goderich Signal -Star reported this week that Cha n, t ,on Road Machinery Ltd. w ►' I be recalling most of the employees previously laid -off. Some 90 workers will be called back in to work. During August and Sep- tember, 1977 approximately 110 employees were laid off because of poor market conditions. The Lucknow Sentinel reported that Shell Oil is drilling for oil on Purvis' property just east of Lucknow. Test drilling was done along Highway 86 from Wingham last September when a formation was found below the soil. The Kincardine News reported that a grade 11 student at Kincardine District Secondary School has been charged with making a malicious telephone can after he allegedly made a bomb threat at the high school recently. Roger A. Malette, 16 of Tiverton was charged with making the threat which was said to be done from another phone in the building. The Listowel Banner reported that Wallace Township Reeve Rae Bender was elected Warden of Perth County. Reeve Bender defeated Fullarton Township Reeve Ormand Pridham by a vote of 20-13. Muriel Garniss has been named Brussels' new post- mistress: The Brussels Post reported that she replaces the late Pearl Kokesch. Mrs. Garniss is not new to post office work. She began regular duty at the Brussels office last year when Mrs. Kokesch became ill. Before that she began working for the post office on a part-time basis in 1957 and became full- time in 1958. The Blyth Standard reported that a number of out-of-towners got storm stayed in Blyth during last week's storm. The people included a visitor froth' 'New Zealand, people from Guelph, Kit- chener, Sudbury and Kirkland Lake. The Zurich Citizens' News reported at the inaugural meeting of the Zurich council, councillors, seemed op- timistic over the successful year. The finance chairman noted that it was, hoped that the council would finish the year with a reasonable surplus and it was also noted that in previous years a recreation deficit had been run up to $11,000 but this year it nearly reached the breakeven mark. The Huron Expositor reported that the Seaforth District High School was evacuated for about 30 minutes on Monday, January 16 when a fire broke out in the school's cafeteria. The blaze which started in the exhaust fan resulted in estimated damages of less than $1,000. By Mrs. H.F. Personals Mr. Robert Snell , had surgery on his ear in a London hospital on Friday. He is improving. Mr. and Mrs. Elgin Thompson are on vacation in Florida. The pot luck supper, w hich was to be held last Friday night, but was cancelled by the storm, will be held this Friday night for the Kippen and Brucefield congregations. We are pleased to see that Mrs. G. McGregor and Mrs. Helen Pepper are out again. Betty suffered from blood poisoning while Helen has a broken wrist. What might have proved to be a more serious accident occurred while Mrs. John Henderson was turning into the driveway of her home. While turning the car was struck by a truck and though Jean was not hurt seriously, her car was badly damaged. Our mistake In a recent story in the News -Record on the mem- bers of Tuckersmith Town- ship attending a convention, several facts may have been misleading. The councillors who attend the meeting are each paid $75 per day, plus $29 each for registration. However, Reeve Ervin Siltery says that the registration fee is not paid by the ratepayers for the councillors sf ouses. 4111k Ale
