Colts edge Ripley 5-3
The Clinton Colts Inter-
mediate hockey club suffered
a 5-3 defeat at the hands of
Ripley last Sunday afternoon
in a home game played in
Blyth.
Ripley was quick to get on
the scoreboard, scoring at
1:56 of the opening period,
and Clinton replied at the 8:21
mark with an unassisted
picture goal from the stick of
Jim (Sinclair) Moon, his first
of the season.
Dave McClure put the Colts
into the lead four minutes
later with Derwin Carter
picking up the assist, but
Ripley scored two more goals
in the last minutes to lead the
game 3-2.
In the second frame. Ripley
opened the scoring before
Clinton picked up their final
tally of the game on an effort
by Paul 1Gibbings, assisted by
Bill Lee and Gary Garniss.
Ripley then scored their final
goal of the game with only 19
seconds left on the clock.
The third period was
scoreless despite some
valiant efforts by the Colts.
Clinton had 16 minutes in
penalties, and Ripley picked
up 14.
The Colts travel to
Palmerston tonight (Thur-
sday, Jan. 26) and then play a
home game against Mitchell
this Sunday January 29 at 4
p.m. in Blyth.

Vanastra .curling news
Those taking part in the 16 -
team Vanastra Curling club
Bonspiel co-sponsored by
Clinton Chrysler -Plymouth
and Kerrigan Fuels were
treated to some fine en-
tertainment last Saturday.
The winners of the first
draw was a rink skipped by
Gerry Walter of Goderich.. In
second place was the rink of
Jim Hawkins also of
Goderich. Bill Campbell
skipping the Seaforth entry of
John Patterson, Doug
Rowcliffe and Gordon Pryce
took third place , and the
Vanastra entry of Don Mit-
chelmore with Edward
Broadfoot, Jim Bell and Ken
Feagan won the consolation
prize.
The second draw winners
were the sentimental
favorites "The Kids" of. the
Vanastra Club skipped by Bill
Gibson, with Paul Galichuik,
Brian Falconer and David
Townsend.
Second place was taken by
the rink of Emmerson
Hodgins from London, and
third went to Barry Davis of
Vanastra with John
Brownridge, Ron Sellars and
Bill Munro. The consolation
prize in the draw was also
won by a Vanastra Rink
skipped by Ron Chuter, with
Ivan Lince, Ian Kennedy and
Ken Rogerson.
Also the ladies' club sent a
team to Goderich; Kay
Sharp, skip; Eleanor Sheils,
vice; Carol Munro, second
and Sheila Davis, lead. The
gals lost their first gatne,won
their second and placed
fourth in the draw.
On Sunday, the Vanastra
club hosted the Seagrams
Mixed District competition
with the Brian Adams team
from Hanover representing
district 13A, eliminating the
team skipped by Gerry
Walter of Goderich who
represented district 138.
The Vanastra club's Colts
competition, also held Sun-
day, was won by the team of
John Brownridge,' skip;
Barry Davis., vice; Ron
Sellars, second and Bill
Munroe, second.
They eliminated the team
of Don Mitchelmore,, skip;
Ron Chuter, vice, Ed
Broadfoot, second and Ward
Hodgins, lead.
The club is having an open
jitney on January 28, with two
draws at 7 and 9 p.m. The 9
p.m. draw is nearly full, but
few have registered for the 7
p.m. draw,

results from the Ladies Spiel
held last Wednesday. On the 9
a.m. draw, first prize went to
Wilma Rathwell's rink from
Listowel.
Second prize was won by

Bantam tournament going well
Although the weather
threatened, and there was
little local fan support,
organizers of the 10th annual
bantam hockey tournament
say the first weekend of the
two weekend tournament
went off very well, with good
gates and some excellent
hockey.
The tournament continues
this weekend, weather per-
mitting, and most of the
championship games are set
for Sunday afternoon and
evening.
, There was one cham-
pionship match in the "AA"
division when Woodstock beat
Milton 2 - 1 in an exciting
overtime game.
Woodstock ' had beaten
Sarnia Township 3 - 2 and 4 - 0
to gain the final, while Milton
nipped Preston 1 - 0 and 3 - 1 in
two preliminary games.
In "A" action, Goderich
beat Windsor Shoreline 1 - 0 in
the first game, but Shoreline
came back to win the series
when they clobbered
Goderich 10 - 5 in the second
game.
Hespeler shut -out
Tillsonburg twice, by 4 - 0 and
6 - 0 scores to gain the "A"
final this Sunday against
Shoreline.
In "B" games, Strathroy
downed Kincardine twice 4 - 3
and 2 - 1, while New Hamburg
beat Sarnia Minor 4 - 1 and
tied them 3 - 3,` and Hanover
nipped Flamboro 3 - 2.
Lambeth beat Seaforth
twice, 4 - 1 and 7 - 0 to advance
in "C" playdowns, while
Point Edward beat Wingham
8 - 3 and Tavistock rolled over
Clinton 10 - 1. Mitchell beat
Palmerston 3 - 2 and 4 - 0 to
advance.
In "D" action, Ilderton had
no trouble with Ripley,
downing them by 8 - 1 and 7 -
0, while Tiverton beat
Thamesford twice, 4 - 0 and 5 -
1.
Lucan will also advance in
"D" actionbyvirtureofa5-2
win and a 2 - 2 tie with
Parkhill, and Dorchester beat
Brussels 7 - 3 in their first
game.
In the "E" championship
Sunday, it will be Zurich
versus Howick. Zurich gained
the finals by virtue of two
wins over Sarnia Reserve, 8 -
3 and 7 - 2, while Howick beat
• Blyth5-Oand8-2.
