PAGE 2—CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 1978 Constance social notes If you don't know what a "Sassenach" is - then meet one. That's right - me, And please don't confuse the term with "Sasq.uatch". There's a difference. The latter refers to the abominable snowmen believed to frequent the forests of British Columbia. I'll admit, when I get outfitted to brace the storms of winter, there might be a resem- blance ! However, a Sassenach is a what the Scots like to call a native English- man - so - as I am writing this column on Wednesday morning January 25 - the anniversary of Robbie Burns - and being as the closest I can come to the Scots is being married to one - here's greetings to the hardy ones, of Caledonia. +++ This is Non -Smoking Week ;and the Huron -Perth Lung Association conducted a Non - Smoking Campaign of the Year Award among nine of the area high schools. The winner comes from our own CHSS - Miss Betty Konarski of RR 1 Blyth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Konarski. We understand that Betty avidly and proudly spoke out against smoking, she con- centrated her efforts on her school bus where it occurs and then carries her cam- paign to fellow students. + + + Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lawson, East Street, were treated by their families to an an- niversary dinner last Sunday at the home of Mrs. Lawson's daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Neill of Wingham district. + ,+ + The Summerhill Hall Board held a very successful card party on Thursday evening, January 19 at the hall. Prize winners were: ladies' high, Verna Gibbings; ladies' low, Laura Forbes; men's high Robin Thompson; men's low, Bill Gibbings; lone hands, Verna Gibbings. The raffle was won by Laura Forbes. Another party is planned for Thursday, February 9, so watch for an announcement in Coming Events. +++ In our praise of the . ap- pearance of the Clinton Legion Pipe Band as part of the Ontario Massed Legion Pipes and Drums and its appearance at the Tour- nament of Roses Parade in Pasadena - we rather neglected to mention the 24 k )04—>! 4 • }Ik _i_?isc sasc N` ri WISHES A HAPPY BIRTHDAY . Each of the seven legions represented had their own three colour bearers - Clin- ton's were Ivan Hoggart, Russell Phillips and Frank Pyke all past presidents of our legion. These three men proudly carried the Canadian flag, the Ontario Flag (Red Ensign) and the Branch 140 colours. Because the 21 members of the seven colour parties brought up the rear of the pipes and . drums the television cameras passed over them to pick up the following float in the pat-a'de. ,Nevertheless, they were there and, along with their compatriots, deserve a word of praise. + ++ Mrs. Marian Laws was the lucky winner of the Vanastra Bingo jackpot on January 17, 1978. + ++ In a news release received from Fanshawe College this week we were proud to see one name from Clinton among the 184 names listed of the members of Youth Band of Ontario and the Youth Singers of Ontario. Jeff Hearn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hearn, Townsend Street, is one of the members of the latter group. The Youth Band and the Youth Singers are all picked by audition to take part in the Annual Band and Choral Workshop to be held at Fanshawe College.,'LBndon on February 3rd, 4th and 5th, 1978. We understand competition at the auditions was very keen, so congratulations to Jeff on being chosen. He is a grade 13 student at CHSS and being able to ,handle schoolwork and partiipate in and endeavour such as this must take a good deal of dedication. The particular program in which all 184 students will appear is "Youth Makes Music" and is °scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 5th at Fanshawe College, London. If anyone is interested in more details we have the brochure and calendar of events at the News -Record Office so either drop in or phone us at 482-3443 and we will t2se happy to give anyone further information. Smile An operation that takes a doctor an hour to perform may take a patient years to describe. + ++ One reassuring thing about modern art is that things can't possibly be as bad as they're painted. Cleo Colquhoun, the only woman member of the rec committee was just one of the volunteers who took tickets at the bantam hockey tournament last weekend. The tourney winds up this weekend. (News -Record photo) Stuck in the middle by Shelley McPhee I must be getting old and becoming more conservative in my ways, for I can't seem to appreciate` the new trend in popular music, known as punk rock. Britain was the leader of the new musical trend with the infamous group, The Sex Pistols. and others like The Vibrators and the Stranglers. The United States quickly caught on and came out with groups like The Ramon'eis, Blondie and Television. Canada has tats own punk rockers, The Diodes. To explain punk rock in a few words is simple, — it's "rotten". Now that is more than just my, opinion, the bands try to be as offensive as they can. The music is putrid, the band members are as gross as they can possibly be and fans follow suit. To be a punk rocker, or a punk rocker fan, you have to be vicious and mean, dye your hair horrendous colors, wear rings and safety pins pierced into your cheeks, dress in black leather and T-shirts that might say "DESTROY" and adorn yourself with Swastikas (for a few examples). You have to be able to swear fluently, belch, spit and vomit (just for effect). The punk music is noisy, repititious and extremely basic. The lyrics are cutting and destructive and the singer snarls out the words, rather than sing them. I must admit that basically I understand punk rock. It 'is merely another attack at the."establishment," a you Tl rebellion. Some British punk rockers in an issue of musical paper "Rolling Stone" summed up punk rock saying, "We are the future - no future." During my teenage years, in the late 60's and 70's, I grew up listening to some of the first punk rock groups like The Animals, The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper and The Who. Now these groups I can understand and enjoy listening to ... but this new punk rock, I'm not too sure of. Gosh, now I sound like my mum and dad did when I tried to explain how neat it was to see Alice Cooper perform on stage with a Boa Constrictor wrapped around his neck, or how fabulous it was to see Peter Townshend of The Who smash his guitar into pieces on the stage floor • By .Mary Merner Mrs. Art McMichael and Jesse of Dungannon visited on Friday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Carl Merner., Michael and Shelley and with Mrs. Mary Scott, Mrs. Bryan Wilkinson and Anthony. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Thom- pson and Leisa of Colborne Township spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs, John Thompson, Sharon and Bob. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Stevenson, David, Darren and Luanne visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Ron Frayne of St. Marys and with Mr. and Mrs. Ron Herman of Stratford. Mr. and Mrs. Reg Lawson, Elizabeth and John attended a family gathering on Sunday held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Neill of Wingham. A family gathering was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Wammes on Saturday evening on the occasion of their 35th wedding anniversary.. Congratulations and may they have many more. CLINTON What kind of a guarantee is it when .a TV set supposedly fixed and guaranteed for 90 days breaks down within a month and the firmsays there is a charge even to come and look at it? This is what happened to my Mother in Toronto. This TV repair firm claims that their guarantee is solid but that it DOES NOT include service calls and they maintain that the problem now with your mother's set is a completely "new fault" so they wanted .the full payment. Anyhow after much haggling, they have agreed to only bill your mother for new parts, since they don't want, what they say, is, "un- necessary static", as they claim they are a dependable firm that has been 'established since 1960. Two years later 4 got married and moved to Grand Bend. It was just a small amount of money, and it isn't really because of the money, but I'm curious to know what would become of my account, and if there is any way I could get it back? The bank that you mention in New Liskeard is unable to find any trace of your account. This is most unusual, to say the least, because normally you should have received a statement from them at regular intervals showing your current balance. There is no way now that you can get this money, because after a nine year period all .unclaimed funds become the property of the Government in Ottawa. T. I am the only wage earner in ourhome. It appears that you didn't go directly from one job to another, as you claimed, because we have learned that there was apparently a break between leaving one job and starting another. This delay in your em- pl-tltment caused a premium not to be paid, hence the reason that OHIP could not honour your medical bill. Ball & Match C LTD.
