Mrs. Walter Forbes occupied the chair and opened the meeting with the reading of a poem, "Bringing in the New", and the Lord's Prayer was repeated in unison. Mrs. George Potter had charge of the devotion; reading from the 5th., chapter of Ephesians. The theme for her comments which followed was "The redeeming of Time." She read New Year's thoughts that all should follow and ended her part of the program with prayer. Ine annual reports of the retiring secretary, Mrs. W. Webster, and the retiring treasurer, Mrs. A.J. McMurray, were given, and showed a busy and a most successful year. Mrs Forbes thanked all those who had given her such loyal support during the two years of her leadership. Mrs. McMurray moved a vote of appreciation to Mrs. Forbes for her capable leadership, and all responded to a hearty round of applause. Vanastra Resource Centre News By Karl Boersma The Resource Centre, sponsored by a Canada Works Grant for $33,540 had its opening night on Wednesday January 11. A number of people from the community turned out to meet the staff. Also on Thursday January 12, the regular community meeting was held. There was a film and a general discussion period. This coming Thursday, January 19, there will be no public meeting. We hope to offer a program for the public the following Thursday, January 27, which will be announced. So far, programs offered by the Resource Centre are in the planning stages. We would like people from the community to feel free to drop in or call the Resource Centre if they would like to participate either in the library, leisuretime activities or the car pool the centre would like to start. Registration for Wed- nesday night card club (7-9 p.m.) and the Monday exerciseweight control program (7-8:30 p.m.) will take place all week from Mrs. Forbes escorted the new leader, Mrs. Marion Powell to the chair. The roll call was responded to with a report of the hospital and home calls done by the members during the past month. To date, there are 16 life members and 18 paid-up members. There were three visitors present. The general meeting of the UCW will be held ' on the evening of Jan. 10 at $ p.m. Mrs. McMurray will take charge of the devotions. The secretary, Mrs. M. Batkin, read the minutes of the December meeting at which time a new slate of officers was presented as follows: leader, Mrs. Marion Powell;ass't leader, Mrs. Gertrude Faegan; secretary, Mrs. Doris Batkin; ass't secr., Miss Kathleen Elliott; treasurer, Mrs. Vera McGregor; ass't treas., Mrs. McMurray; pianist, Mrs. Lorna Radford; ass't pianist, Mrs. Leila Johnston; program cony., Mrs. Helen Potter ; quilting cdnv's., Mrs. Forbes, and Mrs. McMurray. Christian church news Guest preacher John Van Til led the, Worship Service as the pastor was leading ser- vices in Drayton, Ontario last Sunday. Rev. Van Til's message was taken from Psalm 8 and the Vanastra Church choir sang "I Believe." Next Sunday, the message will be "The Spirit and The Church" based on Ephesians 4. The Bible Study was held at Dick and Helen Steenstra's. As a Variation, we had a film entitled "Nail" and a lively discussion following.. Sunday, January 29 we hope to study the Book of Galatians. Arts and Crafts is open to all school age children on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 - 8.30. Everyone is invited to come for crafts and Bible stories. Attention teenagers: the Teen Club will begin this coming Friday evening 7:30 at the Church. Bylsma-Kaastra photo by Harvey McDowel Married in Clinton The Clinton Christian Reformed Church was 'decorated with candelabras, and bouquets of daisies and cream coloured baby car- nations tinted with red for the evening wedding on November 18 of Anne Bylsma and Terry Kaastra. Rev. A. Vandenburg of- ficiated at the double ring ceremony and Mrs. Gail Lear was the organist, while Mrs. Chris Bylsma, a sister-in-law sang. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wobbe Bylsma of RR 1, Blyth and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sid Kaastra. For the wedding, the bride wore a white polyester gown with a horse shoe neckline, decorated at the neckline, bodice and sleeves with lace imported from Belgium. A Juliet cap held her waist - length veil in place. She carried a bouquet of red roses, daisies and baby cream coloured carnations, tinted tied. The, maid of honour, Cory Bylsma of Blyth, a twin sister of the bride, wore a red satin polyester gown trimmed with white lace at the collar. She carried a bouquet of large white daisies and cream coloured baby carnations, tinted with red. . The bridesmaids were Gertie Hellinga and Janet Hellinga of Clinton and Helen Vanden Heuvel of Goderich, a sister of the groom. Their Card party held in Holmesville by Blanche Deeves Worship Service was held in Holmesville United Church on Sunday. Flowers were placed in the church in memory of the late Marigje Potze. Sunday School was held in the Church Hall. Rev. John Oestreicher was in charge of the service. The community wishes to extend their sympathy to the family of the late Marigje Potze. Congratulations to Gerry Area woman dies Marigje Marie Potze Marigje Marie Potze of RR 2, Goderich died in University Hospital, London on Wed- nesday, January 11. She was in her 38th year. She was born in Zuilan, Utrecht Holland on August 30, 1940 to Jan and Pieterdina Bakker. She moved to Canada in 1969. Mrs. Potze was a member of the Holmesville United Church and taught Sunday School there. She is survived by her husband Lambertus Potze and three children, Anja Sieneke, 8, Jan Lucas, 6,'and Pieter Dean Anjo,4, all at home. Mrs. Potze is also survived by two sisters Mrs. Frank (Kryna' De Boer, Holland; Mrs. Bob (Yoke) Nypols, Hd?lland and two brothers, Jan and Karel also living in Winghamn • Memorials • Guaranteed Granite • Cemetery Lettering Buy Direct and • save Commissions. John Oestreicher lead the funeral services on Saturday, January 14 at the Holmesville United Church. Interment followed in the Clinton Cemetery. Pallbearers were Douglas Stirling, William Elliott, Art Bell, John Wubs, Peter Ott and Gerry Greydanus. Card party The' Goderich Township Women's Institute held a card party Thursday, January 12 at the Holmesville School with 6 tables in play. Winners were: ladies' high, Pearl Cummings; men's high, Lloyd McLarty; ladies' low, Thursa Miller; men's low, Francis Powell; lone hands, Gerald Orr; lucky cup, Lloyd McClarty. Lunch was served by the ladies and a social time was had by all. Next card party is January 26 same time, same place and everyone is welcome. Personals Sybil Palmer is visiting Laura (Mulholland) DeBeau, (now Tiller) of Bullhead Arizona for a few weeks. Mrs. dresses . and bouquets were the same as the maid of honour's. The best man was Herman Greidanus of -Clinton, a friend of, the groom. The ushers were Gordon Gerrits, a friend of the groom and Gordon Kaastra a brother of the groom. The newlywed's mothers were ushered into the church by Clarence Haak, a friend of the groom. The groom and his at- tendants wore black tuxedos with white shirts that were trimmed with red. For a reception at the White Carnation in Holmesville the bride's mother wore a blue floral gown accented with a corsage of white carnations. The groom's mother chose a red floral gown also ac- cented with white carnations. Clarence Haak acted as master of ceremonies for the evening and guests were present from Acton, Alymer, Burlington, Port Hope, Parkhill, St. Catharines, Exeter and the surrounding area. Following the wedding ,the couple went on a trip to North Carolina. They will make their new home at RR 4 Goderich. Prior to the wedding the bride was feted at a number of showers: one held . by Wendy Murray, Walton; another held by ,Gertie and Janet Hellinga and a com- munity shower held at Mrs. Benjamins. Sybii Palmer will be spending several weeks around Las Vegas, Phoenix, and California and then up to Seattle, Washington. We hope Sybil will be enjoying her holiday. Little Mark MacLeod of Clinton is enjoying a few days with Gramma and Grampa Betties. Gordon Yeo is back to our cold country after joining in the Rose Bowl parade in Pasadena, California, Tijuana and Disney World. She was in her 74th year. Mrs. Routledge was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Horne of Palmerston where she was born. Later she lived in Listowel, Gowanstown and Palmerston where ,She and her husband operated retail food outlet stores for more 'than 35 years. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Gwen Lavis of Clinton; one sister, Mrs. Elston (Margaret) McLaughlin of Listowel and two brothers, Gordon and Herbert Horne of Palmer- ston. She is predeceased by her husband Charles who died in 1977. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 18 from the Robert Trench Funeral Home in Listowel and interment was in the Fairview Cemetery in Listowel. Pallbearers were her grandsons Bryan, Paul, Gordon and Allan Lavis and. Miss Anne Lavis and Master John Lavis acted as flower bearers. Milton Johnston Milton Johnston of 161 James Street Clinton,, died in Clinton Public Hospital on Monday, January 2. He was in his 78th year. He was born to Edward and Ellen Johnston and remained single all of his life. He is survived by one sister Mrs. Margaret Berdnek of Denver, Colorado and predeceased by one brother James and a sister Mrs. Emma Snell. A memorial service was held at the Beattie Funeral Home, Clinton on Thursday, January 5 with Rev. R.N. Pick in charge. James Roy Plumsteel A Clinton native, James Roy Plumsteel died in the Southampton Nursing Home on Thursday, January 12.1 -le was in his 93rd year. Mr. Plumsteel was born in Clinton on February 18, 1884 to Henry and Margaret Plumsteel. He lived in Clinton all of his life a.id in 1915 he married Hazel Rozella in Clinton... He spent his life farming and was, a member of the Ontario Street United Church. • Mr. Plumsteel is predeceased by his wife who died in 1964 along with two brothers and one sister. He is survived by one sister, Miss Emma Plumsteel. Rev. R.N. Pick was in charge of the funeral service held on Sunday, January 15 from the Beattie Funeral Home in Clinton. Interment followed in the Clinton Cemetery. JACK JAMES HENLEY Jack James Henley of 6 Dunlap Street in Clinton died suddenly at his residence on January 9 at the age of 64. He was born in Winnipeg, R.K. He re-enlisted and served until retiring from it in March of 1964. After serving with the R.C.A.F., he was a com- missionaire at Clinton Air Base and Bendix Home Systems Limited in Hensall. . He had lived in Clinton since 1973. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 109 in Goderich and an adherent of Knox Presbyterian Church in Goderich. On July 11, 1975 he married Constance June Simpson in Clinton. She survives him. Also surviving him are three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy BurnS and Mrs. Nan Fielding both of Winnipeg ana Mrs. Phillip (Jean) Carlton of Toronto; three brothers, Guy, James and Ronald Henley all of Winnip$"'g; two daughters, Mrs. Don (Susan) Cowan of Minnedosa, Manitoba and Diane Henley of Winnipeg, Manitoba; and one grand- daughter. A funeral service and committal was held at Stiles Funeral Home in Goderich on Friday, January 13 at 2 p.m. The - Reverend G.L. Royal conducted the service. Interment was in the Veteran's Plot at Maitland Cemetery, Goderich.
