Hand Grenades.
The following is a recipe for making
hand fire grenades, which cost about three
cents each, and are about as effective as
those sold at about $6 per dozen :—Common
salt, 19.46 ; salamoniac, 8.88; water, 71.66;
or to make it plainer, take twenty pomids
of salt, ten pounds of crude salamoniac, and
dissolve in seventy pounds (7 gallons) of
water, and fill your glass bottles and you can
call it a chemical fire extinguishing com-
pound if you please, as it is fully as good as
any hand grenade manufactured.
Corn Festival.
This novel entertainment was given by
the ladies of the Main st. Methodist church,
on Friday evening last. The large number
of people who sat down at the tables was
eviclence that the efforts of the young ladies
were appreciated. The tables were spread
with all kinds or cake, confectionery, &c.,
as well as every conceivable delicacy made
of corn. After having eaten plentiously,
the gathering repaired to the large school
room, when an excellent programme was
rendered, the participants being persons of
note in local literary circles. In fact the
whole affair was most recherche, and was
highly successful, there being upwards of
.,560 received.
