Through the other weeklies
The Huron Expositor
reported in last week's
edition that the first baby
born in the Seaforth Com-
munity Hospital in 1978 is the
daughter of Darrell and Hilda
Dale of RR 2, Blyth. The little
girl, born at 4:10 p.m. on
Monday, January 2, weighed
8 pounds, 111/2 ounces.
Russel Cook has been
appointed the new arena
manager for the Blyth and
District arena, The Blyth
Standard reported.
He replaces Gary
Richardson. Richardson was
advised by the Blyth District
and Community centre board
that his services would be no
longer required and a new
appointment would be made
as of December 24.
Richardson told the
Standard that he felt that he
had not been given sufficient
reason for the action that the
board took, and he said that
he was given no reason for his
dismissal.
The board stated that there
had been a lack o; com-
munication.
A photograph in the St.
Marys Journal Argus
illustrated the miraculous
escape of truck driver
Howard Felkar, St. Marys
after he leapt to safety from
his truck seconds before it•
was demolished by a
Canadian National passenger
train. Police explained that
Felkar's truck was stuck on
the tracks near the old
Junction station and when he
heard the whistle of the train
he jumped.
In the Goderich Signal -
Star, Dave Sykes made some
predictions for 1978. He said
that Premier Rene Levesque
will be given the title of
chairman of the Ontario
Tobacco Producers
Association for his efforts to
the cause.
Also, Margaret Trudeau
will just miss winning an
Oscar, to an NDP back ben-
cher for his performance
during a televised session of
the House of Commons
debate. Jean Chretien will be
given honorable mention for
the best facial contortions in a
supporting role.
The Kincardine News
reported that Huron Town-
ship has supported a request
from Bruce County asking for
a fire radio system.
The county mutual aid fire
department would like to see
the five fire departments in
the county with one aerial,
one base station and one
countywide radio service for
Bruce.
The cost of the system
would be $55,000 to the
county, about $2,500 per fire
department it was noted.
The " purpose of the
unification would be used if
more fire trucks and men
were needed or if an am-
bulance 'or police services
were required.
The water level of the
Lucknow swimming pool is
still dropping, the Lucknow
Sentinel explained last week.
A three-inch drop in the
water level each week was
occurring until scuba divers
were brought in in November
to check the hydro -static
valves at the bottom of the
pool. Following their check
the water was only dropping
ata rate of one inch a week.
The pool is still continuing
to lose one inch a week of
water and it is hoped that
spring comes early, by
March, before the pool
reaches a danger point where
damage can be done to the
liner.

Meanwhile, Dr. Conners'
help, may have been needed
when another Banner story
reported that the Listowel
Memorial Hospital was busy
over the Christmas weekend
when the flu extensively hit
the area. Although no exact.
figures were available, the
hospital noted that it was
treating more children than
adults and a large number of
out-patients.
More than the usual
amount of staff at the hospital
has also been off, sick with
the flu.
Its symptoms include
headaches, earaches and
vomitting.(Note: in the
Friday, January 6 issue of the
London Free Press it was
noted that the Listowel
Hospital had imposed visiting
restrictions at noon Thursday
in an attempt to curtail the
illness.)
The Wingllam. Advance -
Times reported that a
Harriston youth has been
arrested by the Mount Forest
OPP following the two-year-
old Ayton murder.
It was noted that this is the
first big development in the
case which left police baffled
during the investigation that
began on September 19, 1975.
The arrest of William
Joseph Albert, . 18, of
Harriston follows the death of
56 -year-old Aletha Jane
Henning of Ayton, who was
bludgeoned to death in her
service station restaurant. No
motive for the slaying has
ever been disclosed by the
police.
Also arrested in the case
was Eugene Lawrence
Morgan, 34 of Big River,
Saskatchewan. He was ap-
prehended by the RCMP in
Saskatchewan as a request by
OPP and was returned to
police in Ontario.
The Exeter Times -
Advocate reported that Liz
Bell, formerly deputy clerk,-"
treasurer for the town has
been hired as clerk -treasurer
following' the retirement of
Eric Carscadden.
At the same ttme, Brian
Parsons was given the
position as new deputy clerk -
treasurer. Parsons comes
from Thorndale.
