(News - Record photo) Merchants explode for 9-7 win The Goderich Merchants scored six times in the final period to outlast the Zurich Flyers 9-7 in an Intermediate D game Thursday in Clinton. The Merchants were down 4-3 after two periods and out- scored the Flyers 6-3 in the final 20 minutes for the win. The win boosts the Merchant record to five, two and two leaving them in a fourth place tie with Grand Bend, one point out of three. The Flyers took an early lead in the game scoring twice in the opening period. They drew first .blood with a power play goal at 14:06 after Cam McDonald went off for slashing. Steve Bedour grabbed,the first goal. Less than two' minutes later Kim McKinnon gave the Flyers a two goal edge but Phil Petrie cut the lead in half with a Merchant goal two minutes before the end of the period. Tom O'Brien assisted on the score. Zurich went back on top by two 4:38 into the second on a goal by Ron Rader but the 'Merchants came back with two to even the score late in the period. Ron Corriveau worked the puck to Charlie Robertson and he made it 3-2 and five minutes later Brian Thompson scored with help from Barry 'Bloch and Paul Corriveau to even things at three. The Flyers scored with eight second left in the period to take a 4-3 edge into the dressing room. Goderich came- out loaded for h.'ar in the .final period and grabbed three goals in the first five minutes to take a 6-4 lead. Bloch and Ron Whetstone set up McDonald with just over a minute played in the third and he tied the score and a minute and a ,half later Paul Corriveau put the Merchants on top for the first time with help from Ron Corriveau and Frank Hagen. John Hoy and Paul Corriveau set up Dave Shelley and he gave the Merchants a two goal edge before McKinnon struck back for the Flyers to cut -the lead to one. Hoy picked up a pass from Doug Smith with just over eight minutes remaining and gave the Merchants back a • two goal edge and Ron Whetstone notched what proved to be the winner on a neat three way play by Robertson and McDonald. The final game between Allenford and Markdale saw Allenford take the cham- pionship. For those following the British Consol Teams, Cam Bogie's team from Goderich won the division 13 play offs against Ron Findlay from Owen Sound, two games straight in Goderich on Sunday. The inter -division seniors playdowns in Exeter on Sunday saw. division 13's entry Mac Douglas from Meaford eliminated. Sub -division 13B mixed playdowns will be held next weekend in l xeter. With five minutes left Rader hit to cut thelead to two and a goal by Dave Cyr with just -mender three minutes to go made it 8-7 and the Flyers had momentum. Paul Corriveau settled the issue with 1:54 to go with a goal set up by Thompson and Hagen. The Merchants host Thedford tonight in Clinton at 8:30 and travel to Zurich Sunday to take on ° FIVnsall at 7:00. The Flyers held a team draw recently and A. Sovran of Essex won first prize and D. The scoring quickly drops off from there, leaving the Dumbells in third with 49 points and the Doolittles last with 37. Reino Wilts had 'the high single of 368 and Florence Carter took the high triple of 742 while Dorothy, Carter had the high average (4 '196. YBC Majors Louise Gibbings was the top lady bowler of the day as she took the high single with 268, the high triple with 623 and the high average with 196. Steve Gibbings was the top bowler for the men. He had the high single of 280,' the high triple of 732 and the .high average of 225. The Five Stars is in first place with b5 points leaving Kathy's Clowns behind with 46. The Zappers have 39 points and the Pickles are last with 28. Following down the line the Ramblings from the races By Lois Gibbings Frank MacDonald of Erie St. in Clinton, who combines his plumbing and heating business with his racing' activities is taking an en- forced holiday from both at the present time. He has a broken right arm following an accident at the Clinton Firehall on Fanuary 4 when his ladder slipped while he was lighting an overhead furnace. This is the second time this same arm has been broken, so he may be out of action for a couple of months. The weather is playing havoc once more with the races at Western Fair Raceway in London. The Monday, January 9 ca -rd has' been, postponed until Friday, January 13, weather per- mitting. ' At Flamboro on January 3, Truanna Duke started the year out right for her owner and trainer Wayne Horner of Brucefield when she won the second race in °2 :11'.4. Friday night at London, H.O. (Bud) Jerry of Goderich was a winner with his five- year-old Scarlet Wave pacer Ima Jerry in the eighth. Last year, she took a record of 2:08.1 at Hanover. From 23 starts she had two wins, seven seconds and two thirds for earnings of $1,757. Bud finished fifth with Ima Gene Jerry in the second. Jay Dee Lonesome, owned by James D. Taylor of Hensall, was third for driver Art Abbott in the third. The nine-year-old mare by Adios Ray -June Glenford was a winner of $2,748 in 1977 from five wins, five seconds and three thirds in 26 starts. Prima Daisy finished fourth for owners John Bettke „of Elmira and,Roy Baynham of Kippen. Ron Williamson was second with Will's Ferricain the fourth.
