(News -Record photo) Colts dump Mitchell 8 -Sat home The Clinton Colts Inter- mediate hockey club beat the Mitchell Red Devils 8-5 last Sunday night in Clinton. Clinton's Harvey Carter opened the scoring at the :31 second mark, and Brad Morgan got another goal two minutes later, before Mitchell scored two before the halfway mark to tie the score. Brad scored his second effort of the first period for Clinton, but Mitchel came back and tied it up again. With only one minute remaining, Dave McClure banged one in for Clinton with Dave Archibald getting the assist. In the second period, Clinton did all the scoring to put the game out of reach of Mitchell. Clinton marksmen were Bill Lee, Dave McClure with the winner, and John Feeney. Mitchell made a vain at- tempt to catch-up by scoring two goals in the third period. but Derwin Carter scored unassisted for Clinton that put the icing on the cake. There was 30 minutes in penalties, with Clinton get- ting 18 minutes of those. In a home and home series against Brussels over the New Year's weekend, Clinton split the two games, winning here 10-6 on December 29, and losing in. Brussels 8-4 on January 3. In the win, Clinton scorers were Bud Boyes, Dennis Kelly, and Dave McClure with two each, while singles were scored by Derwin Carter and Paul Gibbings. Clinton players spent 20 minutes in the sin bin, while Brussels were given 30 minutes in penalties. Goal scores in the Colts 8-4 loss were John Feeney with two, and Derwin Carter and Robert Mayer with one each. The Colts travel to Monkton this Friday January 13, and host Palmerston here Sunday at8p.m. Mustangs lose second of year by Bryan Marriage The Walkerton Black Hawks, with the help of referee Allan Dawe, handed the Clinton Mustangs their second defeat of the season, 6- 4 in Walkerton Sunday af- ternoon. The Clinton team went to Walkerton minus Steve Cook with the *flu and Pete Thompson with an injury. When the game ended, Greg Butler had left with a shoulder injury and John Graham, Tim MacLean, Paul Helesic and coach Dan Colquhoun had all departed with game misconducts. `The game misconducts resulted in referee Allan Dawes' inability to call minor penalties until the game was completely out of control. In two incidents to the Walkerton team, one player received a ten- minute misconduct which he never served and another player, who received two major penalties for fighting which calls for an automatic game misconduct, was allowed to continue playing. Anyway, when the game was finished Walkerton came away with the victory after firing 48 shots at Clinton netminder Dean 'Ryan while Clinton could manage only 29 against Walkerton. Scoring for Clinton handled by John Hart, Helesic, newcomer Jamie Richards and Tim MacLean. Former Mustang Bruce MacDonald also has signed with Clinton and is expected' to see action this weekend. Last Friday in Clinton, the Hanover Barons came to town and produced a lack- lustre effort as the Mustangs skated to a 12-3 victory. Hanover scored once each period while the Stangs scored two in the first, seven in the second and three in the third. Steve Cook, Neil Colquhoun and Tim MacLean each scored twice for Clinton, while Paul Helesic, Paul Preistap, John Graham, Jamie Richards, Chris Cossitt and Bill Roy each fired singles. John Graham also had four assists. Derek Divok had an easy night in goal for the Stangs facing 28 shots while Joe Sullivan in the Barons' net faced 57 shots. Sailors fight back for win over Lucknow The Goderich Sailors fought back three times to tie the Lucknow Lancers in an Intermediate C game Friday night and then scored two third period goals to dump the Lancers 8-6. The Sailors scored two of their four third period goals while playing five aside after Dan Duncan and Doug Stevenson each got the gate for roughing. The Lancers drew first blood midway through the opening period when Carl Stanley broke in on Sailor netminder Dave Rigger and beat him for an unassisted marker. Less than a minute later Don Baker was set up by Wayne and Paul Rau and Baker evened things up. Stanley went back to • work and 1:07 later fed Greg Hamilton and the Lancers were back in . front. Kevin Meriam made it two apiece just under two minutes after the Lancers had grabbed the lead and the clubs went to the dressing room; tied at two. Wayne Rau assisted on Meriam's score. The Lancers went right to work in the middle period and after 2:45 had been played Dave McKinnon finished off a three way play with Mike Country and Jim Murray to boost the Lancers back in front. The Sailors tied the game for the third time at 9:8 when Wayne Rau hit from the point after Duncan and Paul" Kelley worked the puck to him. The tie lasted until the last minute of the period when the offense went back to work for both clubs. Five seconds into the penalty Kevin Meriam set Sowerby up for his second goal and then Shelton hit 10 seconds later for the winner. Shelton ' got help from Sowerby. The Mustangs will return home on Monday and then on Tuesday, they will travel to Hanover to face the Barons.
