by Shelley McPhee
We're living in an age of progress. Technically
speaking, we're inventing new and better ways and our
minds are growing keener. Our views on most subjects
are more liberal aid well thought out before they are
accepted or abandoned.
However, one area that has not progressed as well as
others is the view of women and their role in society.
Occasionally I find that women are still thought of, in
the man's mind, to be pretty, dainty things who probably
aren't that intelligent and are too emotional to stand the
stress of many jobs. '
I've noticed when I'm gathering facts for news stories
that some people, often men, seem reluctant to give any
information to me, or if they do, seem overly concerned
that I'll misquote them or unintentionally twist the facts
around since my feminine mind doesn't have the
capacity to fully comprehend all of the information.
At coffee breaks, which bring together many men of
the town I'm often the recipient of sexist jokes and smart
comments. However these are all made in fun and I must
admit that now and then I get a few compliments.ars well.
At the fire station I often feel slightly out of place and
slightly outnumbered. Especially when the firemen joke
about how they must , watch their language in the
presence of a lady. Granted I am a lady but I hardly think
that I would be totally shocked or break down into
hysterical tears if "the boys" started swearing. My ears
have been subject to "manly language" before.
I suppose things could be worse though and I could
have been subject to far worse conditions for women in
India, for example. -
In that sometimes backward country the birth of a son
is still thought to be a gift and the birth of a girl is a great
disappointment, and often tragic.
In some primitive' villages many Indian girls are faced
with hardships because of their sex and often early
deaths. Marriages are still arranged by the bride's
parents and if they fail to arrange a suitable match the
parents face social andreligious disgrace. Besides this,
in the Hindu society women are expected to stay at home
and jobs for females are few. Reports of female in-
fanticide are still found in some Indian villages, however
most of these are never ciocunlented.
Fortunately life is not quite as difficult for women of
the Western world, but some attitudes still need revising
before women can obtain the standards of their male
counterparts.

At this time of year there
are always a number of
questions concerning
snowmobiles. We are
publishing herewith some of
the most common and we give,
due credit to the' Preventive
Law Program in Ottawa for
this information which we
trust will prove helpful to
some of our readers.
What is the minimum age
for the driver of a snow
vehicle?
A motorized snow vehicle
operator's licence may be
issued to any person who has
attained twelve years and
meets the requirements as set
out in the Motorized Snow
Vehicles Act and the
regulations authorizing a
person to drive a snow vehicle.
It is suggested that a person
under twelve years of age may
drive a snow vehicle on the -
lands occupied by the owner of
the vehicle but nowhere else.

I intend to`move in the near
future. 1 realize I must change
my address on my driver's
licence. Must I- do anything
with the permit for my
snowmobile?. •
As owner of a motorized
snow vehicle you must send by
registered mail or file with the
Ministry of Transportation
and Communications notice of
your new address within six
days of the move.
Can I be charged with an
offence, similar to those I may
be subject to while driving my
car, white 1 am operating my
snow machine?
By virtue of a new amend-
ment to the legislation
regulating the use of
motorized snow vehicles,
every person who drives such
a vehicle without due care and.
attention or without
reasonable consideration for
other persons is guilty of
careless driving.

Could yo1i' tell me the
relevant speed limits imposed
on snowmobile drivers?
Where the established speed
limit on a highway or a public
park or exhibition ground is 50
kilometres per hour (30 miles
per hour) or less the 'speed
limit for the snow vehicle is 20
kilometres per hour (15 miles
per hour). Where the
established speed limit on any
highway which is open to
motor vehicle traffic or a
public trail is greater than 50
kilometres per hour the speed
limit is 50 kilometres per hour.
A munic ality may,by bylaw,
prescribd a different rate of
speed upon any highway in
their jurisdiction. But the
bylaw would not be effective
unless signs are erected in
accordance ith the
regulations.
