behalf of the members by the
president and presented with
a gift of appreciation.
The regular meeting
followed and the president
opened the session by reading
a poem. The usual reports

RADIANT LIFE CENTRE
Ontaiio Street Church starts centennial
Ontario Street United
Church kicks off their Cen-
tennial celebrations next
Sunday January 15, with a
special service at 11 a.m., and
has many special events
planned for the whole year.
The church, which was
built in 1878, will be busy -this
year, according to Centennial
celebrations chairman Ken
Flett, and next Sunday will
open the anniversary with
guest speaker Dr. Anson
Moorhouse, president of the
London Conference of the
United Church of Canada.
With the idea of quietly
retiring, Dr. Anson
Moorhouse, who spent most
of his adult life in bustling
Toronto, acquired a home in
rural Shetland, Ontario. -,
But that's not the way it
worked out. In May of this
year, (1977) Dr. Moorhouse
was elected President of
London Conference of the
United Church. That meant a
more than full time
chaplaincy to 350 ministers
and churches with an active
membership of 200,000
people.
Travel is required
regularly to committee
meetings in London and each
of the eight Presbyteries
which coincide,
geographically, with the eight
counties of Essex, Kent,
Elgin, Huron -Perth, Oxford,
Middlesex, Lambton and
Algoma.
Dr. Moorhouse spent much
ofahis boyhood in the Shetland
area where his parents were
born. He was ordained in the
United Church ministry in
1935 and had two pastoral
charges near St. Thomas and
one at Arkona.
The event that changed the
direction of his career was
the making of a film in 1941.
Using the people of the
Arkona Congregation, Anson
Moorhouse produced a film
about a student minister. He
also dared to use it as part of
his ministry of proclamation.
This thrust him into the
limelight of the national
headquarters of the United
Church, and before he
realized fully what was
happening, he was urged to
devote his talent to the
Promotional Department of
the Church,
Until that time, the
preached or printed word was
the sole means of com-
munication used in the
churches in Canada. But
Anson's experiment opened
up a whole new field of
communicating through
visual aids.
Until the time of his
retirement in 1973, Dr,
Moorhouse was the Director
of Instructional Com-
munication for the United
church in Canada for 30
years, He was founder and
director of Berkley Studios,
specializing in film and
filmstrip production.
Dr. Moorhouse produced
over 200 sound films from
assignments in Canada and
all over the world. His films
won awards in The Canadian
Film Festivals, 11 awards at
the American Film Festival
in New York and two blue
ribbons for the best religious
films produced in North
America.

He was admitted to the

with the Special Award by the

pioneer of the Canadian film

Dr. Moorhouse says, "The
church that can't com-
municate is plainly dumb."
The annual budget for the
National Promotion
Department is now $175,000
and to articulate the truth of
God's love for what is often an
unloving world, and to make
plain the mission of the
Church, that is not too high a
price.
In late 1974 he married
