The St. Marys Journal
Argus reported a special
birthday in last week's paper
when Miss Nellie Purdue
celebrated her 101st birthday
on December 16.
'Miss Purdue was born in St.
Marys and has lived most of
M her life in the area and is the
last living member of a
family of 13. She still enjoys
good health and resides at the
Wildwood Nursing Home,
R.R. 2, St. Marys.
Kincardine will be getting
the financial help of town-
ships to pay for recreational
costs.
The Kincardine News
reported that Kincardine
Township has offered to pay
part of the costs. The price set
by the township councillors
was $20,000.
Stipulations placed on the
grant said that half of the
money would go to recreation
and the other half towards the
operating deficit of the
community centre. The
township also noted that the
money would not be given if
the town puts a surcharge on
the use of the recreation
facilities for the township
people.
For the second year in a
row, Hugh McCaughey, 75, of
Wallace Township bas spent
an unhappy Christmas.
The Listowel Banner
reported that for the second
year, just before Christmas
dogs raided Mr.
McCaughey's rabbitry and
killed some 35 to 40 rabbits.
Only one of the animals was
partially eaten and the rest of.
the rabbits were strewn about.,.,
their cage.
Although the cages were
supposedly well -made and
protected by plywood,
chicken wire and metal
grating, the dogs managed to
tear into almost all the cages.
Four does and six half grown
rabbits survived the
massacre by hiding in their
- nests.
Due to the high snow banks
Jalong Mitchell's streets, the
town's PUC put up markers
beside fire hydrants to enable
the firemen to readily find
their location in the winter
months.
However, the Mitchell
Advocate reported this week
that the PUC are concerned
because these markers are
being tampered with,
removed and broken. The
PtJC felt that the bent and
broken markers were the
work of good-sized people
since they are quite sturdy.
They also noted that the
destruction of the markers is
a criminal offence and
subject to charges under the
criminal code.
Bruce County has had a day
care service for the past
month. However it doesn't
have any children to babysit.
The Lucknow Sentinel
reported though that the
county social service's
director, Dick Verrips said
that the program is not yet a
failure and may take- tome
time'to catch on. He predicted
that within a year there would
be one dozen children in the
program.
The day care centre is
designed for single parents
who can't use a regular day
care service and who work
irregular hours.
The Blyth Standard
reported that the village
council may be looking into
the preservation of Blyth's
older buildings as part of the
village's heritage.
Huron Architect Nick Hill
was commissi( ,ed by the
village to prepare a short
study on the building heritage
of the village. The report
emphasized that Blyth was a
good mixture of worthwhile
buildings, which if preserved
would make the community a
more interesting place to
shop in and to visit.
A fire which gutted the
family home of Walter Brown
in Morris Township recently,
caused over $12,000 in
damages and left the family
without a home, clothes or
