Clinton News-Record, 1977-12-29, Page 3Auburn residents are greeted by carollers on Christrnas Eve Over 25 children and a few adults enjoyed an hour of carol singing around Auburn on Christmas Eve stopping at many doors to entertain the residents of the village. At seven o'clock all went to the United Church manse where O Mrs. Earl St Jean and her daughter Elizabeth served hot chocolate and treats to everyone. Mr. and Mrs. Sandy Andrews, Bradley, Darcy, Brent and Ian visited relatives at Port Albert on Christmas Day. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Haines of Niagara Falls visited last weekend with his parents Mr. 6 and Mrs. Donald Haines. Mr, and Mrs. George Collins and Jonathan spent Christmas Day at Lucknow with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Jack Collinson. 0William J. Craig and Mrs. Bell Allen were Christmas Day guests with Mr. and Mrs. William S. Craig and family at Clinton. CHRISTMAS FIRST The first Children's Christmas party sponsored by the Auburn and District Lion's Club was a huge success last Wednesday evening in the Auburn Community Memorial hall. Children's Cartoons were shown in films arranged and shown by Donald Haines and Bill Crawford. In in- termission Christmas carols were sung led by James Towe with Mrs. Murray Nesbitt accompanying on the piano. A beautiful , decorated Christmas tree was a pretty setting when Santa Claus arrived and gave out 156 bags of candy to the children. SOCIAL NEWS Mrs, Jay Ball and Mrs. Laura Komfes of Bayfield The Christmas ' Story in living pictures with lights and music was presented by the Knox United Church Young People and choir on Christ- mas Eve. The organist was Mrs. Norman Wightman. Narrator and soloist was Elliott Lapp. In the pageant were - Marilyn Wightman who played the part of Mary, Andrew Koopmans, Joseph; David Durnin, Herod; Greg Hallam, High Priest; Anita Hallam, Gabriel; Debbie Cunningham, Sharon Glousher, Faye Hildebrand, Carol Seers; Angels; Sherry Verbeek, Rachel; Kim McDowell, Elizabeth; David St. Jean, Zacharias; Larry Plaetzer, Simeon; Brent Andrews, Keith Hallam, Michael Andrews, Kings; Nancy Verbeek, Linda Cunningham, Patti McDowell, Shepherds. The lighting was done by the Rev. Earl St. Jean and David St. Jean. The offering was given to the work of El Pueblito a children's village for orphans in Costa Rica. However, this is not always easy to do. Often over the.Christmas Season, we hear the words "Peace on Earth, Goodwill to All Men", and sometimes I wonder if this has become an impossible dream for mankind'. Today, telecom- munications have tran- sformed the world into a Global Village. Whatever happens to one group, or one nation, touches usall deeply. Nor can we ignore the suf- fering of our fellow -men. Here in Canada, we are, in many ways, very fortunate compared 'with people in other parts of the world. We live under a democratic system of government, in a land of peace and com- parative prosperity. It's true that inflation has had a considerable effect on all our lives - in some cases causing very real hardship, but, comparatively speaking, we still have many blessings for which to be thankful. Certainly, at this period in Canada's history, we are confronted with problems - many of them quite serious. Inflation has adversely af- fected our lives. Unem- ployment has reached crisis proportions - we are par - good year, we look forward to one even better, shared with our friends.
