_CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1977
Thro
ugh the other weeklies
Recently, some discussio
arose in St. Marys as to
whether the town policemen
could be members of the
volunteer fire department. At
the time it was decided that
fire fighting would conflict
with the policemen's other
duties and officers on the fire
brigade would ask to resign.
However, this week the St.
Marys Journal -Argus
reported that the town council
decided that they would allow
Sgt. Robert Dundas to remain
as an active volunteer
fireman, provided that Chief
Ed Matheson agrees to this.
Sgt.• Dundas has been a
member of the firefighters
for the past 10 years and holds
the position as captain and
the volunteer department
were not happy about the
previous decision; that they
would lose Dundas.
Council now plans to send a
letter to Chief Matheson
asking for his reconsideration
on the matter. Under the
Ontario Police Act, the police
chief determines whether an
officer can serve in both
capacities.
The Wingham Advance -
Times reported this week that
Fred Porter of Leopold Street
in 'Wingham won't have his
Christmas display in front of
his home this year.
" His display which included
hundreds of different pieces
has drawn crowds in previous
years and Porter has been
receiving calls from as far
away as Sarnia, asking if the
'wonderland" will be set up
this year.
Porter told the Advance -
Times that he would love to
be able to set it up again, but
it is nearly impossible
without help.
The ,residents °of , the Ritz
Lutheran Villa in Mitchell
will be looking forward to
spring, the Mitchell Advocate
reported, because a new
project will get underway
then.
A grant of $6,175 has been
made available for the senior
citizens residence to establish
a greenhouse. The money is
available from the New
Horizons grant program.
The Advocate also noted
that Rev. E.G. Nelson will be
taking on new charges at the
Presbyterian churches at
Motherwell, Avonbank and
Avonton.,
Rev. Nelson is a Goderich
native and previously
preachedin Seaforth and St.
Andrew's Church in Clinton.
Gwyn Whilsmith and Ron
Bogart were honored in
Exeter recently as citizens of
the year.
The Exeter Times -
Advocate, reported that Mrs.
Whilsmith was the recipient
of the 1977 award for her work
as a writer, town hall
proponent and church leader.
It was. noted that her com-
munity interest runs from the
children through to senior
citizens.
Ron -Bogart received the
other 1977 award for his work
as a finance chairman for the
South Huron Rec Centre and
as.coach of the Exeter Hawks
who took the Ontario
championship this year. His
football team at SHDHS also
reached the conference final.
Clerk Eric Carscadden was
also honored at the civic
banquet. After 29 years
Carscadden will be retiring at
the end of January.
The Kincardine News
reported that Unit two at the
Bruce Generating Station at
the Nuclear Power Plant had
to be shut down for a day and
a half last week and has been
running at 730 megawatts
instead of 750 megawatts for
the past five days. The reason
for the shut -down was caused
by 120 tons of fish which,
plugged up the unit. •
The fish were attracted to
the warm water, which is
discharged from the unit.
They piled up against the
screen and caused the water
level to drop at the unit.
The 120 tons of fish were
netted by a Southampton
commercial fisherman who
has been 'contracted by
Hydro. The fish have no,
commercial value but
inquiries have been made as
to their use as fertilizer or
feed at some local mink
farms. However, so far no one
is interested and the fish are
now being dumped at the
plant's waste disposal site.

Village emploYe'es of
Zurich and the councillors
will be getting a wage in-
crease, the Zurich Citizens'
News learned.
After a 45 minute debate,
the Zurich council agreed to
the six percent increase for
the five village employees.
•
However, the increase will be
six percent across the hoard
rather than a straight six
percent increase. The
proposal for the straight
increase got little support
from the councillors.
The councillors will receive
an increase from $42 to $45 for
regular meetings and the
reeve will -now be paid $50 per
meeting instead of $46.

Seaforth Council has
agreed' partially with the
Huron county proposal for
county wide residency rule
for senior'citizens housing but
they have refused to• endorse
the portibn of the proposa'
which said that the county
would administer deficit
payments for the establish-
ments.
The 'Huron I:xpositor .
reported that the council felt
that the removal of the
responsibility of the deficit
payments from the individual
municipalities was another
step towards regional
government.
