Press Iny views on the town hall question.
I will coinueence by saying, that it was, a
very grievous mistake of the eeunea not to
adept the first plan prepared by Mr.
Duran. Of the two plane the firet drawn
would have give eittisfaction, evhile the
letter, the one from. whieh our town hall is
to be built will neverjereve so, There is net
net.au inhabitant who will be satisfied in the
eon elm with the smaller building, although
some of them now attest it is more euitable,
which ita owing to the Met teat the cost is
considerably lees. Again some ;are opposed
to its erection e.t. all, on account of the pro.
posed railway.hoims, I say if wo get the
reilway, so much the more need of e good
town hall ; the increase in population will
soon demand it, and the town will then be
'Atte seable to pay for it .Aid supposing
we r ( o not get a railway, let es have a good
peb ie hall t14 44 will attract the attention of
the errounding country -something that
will not be a monument of dishonor to the
town. Some will say this is foolish talk as
the contact has been let All well and
good. But the contractor's were the same
ender both plans, so it would in no wise
conflict with the brick -layers, and probably
the greater part of the lumber on the ground
could be worked in to advantage by the
carpenters. In conclusion let me say that
I am confident that the majority of the
rate -payers and inhabitants of the town will
bear me out in asking the council to build
us a good substantial town hall or none.
Don't put up a structure that will in a few
years be neeless. Thanking you for space,

Our Cemetery.
To the Editor of the Exeter Timm
DEAR SIR. --With the advent of spring
our villagers must feel the need of a park or
public walk. We do not appear to be in a
position to secure a public park, but I be-
lieve a pleasant public walk could be obtain-
ed with very little expense end at the same
time add much to the beauty of our village
and the comfort of our citizens. Our ceme-
tery is from one to two miles out of town,
and during pleasant weather, is visited on
holidays and Sundays by many who have
friends buried there. If the walk was
made more attractive and the cemetery kept
as it should be, many who are found hang-
ing around our street corners, would spend
the hour or two given to recreation in the
beautiful exercise of walking. Both their
moral and ',esthetic natures would be edu-
cated by the attractive walk and well kept
grounds.
, At present the cemetery authorities do
not take any intereat in it. A number o1.
walks were opened out last summer, but no
attempt was made to reduce the grounds to
order. All sorts of plants and shrubs are
allowed to be planted, and if many of these
are net rooted out the plots which are not
covered with unsightly vegetation soon will
be. te The cemetery authorities should not
alloesVegingle plant to be put there without
their clement, they should have all railings
removed and every lot made level or nearly
so. Over some of the graves the earth is
raised two feet or more, a few unsightly
shrubs or vulgar flowering plants stuck in
and then allowed to run wild., ruining their
neighbors' plots as well as their own. If
all the plots were levelled the grass might
be cut with a lawn -mower, and the whole
Place kept in good order at et minimum of
cost. What is more attractive or more be-
coming than a well kept lawn ? Many of
the monuments are being discolored by the
long geass and trees near them. those
who. teXe.laterested bestir themselves ?
believeilhey
In my opinion a very attactive walk may
be made by following the river from the
Main-st bridge to the Lake Road bridge.
The right to use this might be easily secur-
ed and. trees planted along both sides of the
river. I should like to see a carriage road
along the river, but if this is too great
a luxury, let us have simply a foot path.
Surely there is enough public spirit and go-
ahead in Exeter to do this much for the
benefit of our citizens and good name of our
town.
I hope Sir, this may be the means of hav-
ing these matters discussed by those better
able to do so.
