Goderich Township WI The Goderich Township WI held their December meeting on the Holmesville Public School recently. Bernice Mcllwain opened the mert in,; :Ind welcomed the ladies, and Alice Porter read the minutes and correspondence. Laura McLarty introduced the guest speaker for the evening, John Kane from Colborne Central School. Four girls, Patti and Kathy Shoemaker, Lori Dykstra and Karen Hyde also came along to' demonstrate rhythmics exercises to music. Some of the WI members also joined in. Mr. Kane explained to the ladies how these exercises can help our bodies and minds and how they are used in the schools. Laura thanked Mr. Kane and the girls for coming. The social part of the evening was an international Christmas theme. The . con- veners picked a country and - took their food and en- tertainment to match. Marion Powell chose Mexico, Millie Dempsey and Margaret Coombs chose the Orient and Evelyn Holland took Holland. The ladies decided that the dates for card parties would be January 12 and 26 at 8:15 p.m. at the Holmesville School. After the collection was received, everyone enjoyed singing some carols and lunch was served. Personals Clarence and Jean Purdue travelled to Barrie for the weekend to visit their daughter and family. We are glad to hear that Hazel McCreath is feeling better. Well wishes must go to her. It's nice to see the houses in Holmesville looking so pretty for Christmas. Other officers are as follows:- past president:Mrs. Ian McAllister, first vice- president, vacant; second • vice-president, Mrs. Carl Payne; secretary, Mrs. Jack Drysdale; treasurer, Mrs. Ian McAllister; chairman of committees - stewardship and finance, Miss Mary Goodwin; communications • and leadership development, Mrs. Carl Payne; world outreach and Christian development, vacant; church in society, vacant; christian citizenship, Mrs. Jack Cor- bett; supply and welfare, Russell Erratt; friendship and visitation, Mrs. Clendon Christie; social functions, Mrs. Vern Alderdice. Unit leaders are: unit 1, Mrs. Ken Elder;' unit two, Mrs. Hans Gerstenkorn; unit 4, Mrs. James McAllister; nursery, Mrs. Edison Forrest; nominating com- mittee, Mrs. Ian McAllister. During the business period, reports were . given -by treasurer Mr. TanMcAllister on behalf of Mrs. Walter Spencer; finance and budget, _Miss Mary Goodwin; friendship and visitation, Mrs. Howard Scane; social functions, Mrs. Vern Alderdice and supply and 'welfare, Mrs. Russell Erratt. The Christmas.. meeting of the UCW followed with Mrs. Stewart Miner of Exeter as the guest speaker. She spoke on the Christmas season and making room in our hearts • for Jesus Christ - we can make time for Him in our conversation, lifer plans, entertainment, time, gift giving and in our sorrows. Then we shall leave Christ- mas behind as a new person, "returning by another way." Mrs. Miner was introduced by Mrs. Carl Britton and thanked byMrs. Russell Erratt. Mrs, Eric Luther gave a very lovely solo, "0 Come to my heart, Lord Jesus" and was accompanied by the piano by Mrs. Robert Bell. A beautiful devotional was given by Mrs. Jack Drysdale and Mrs. Roger Venner illustrating that giving a gift from the heart at Christmas time, like kindness, is the greatest gift we can give, The offering is to be given to the Family and Children's Services. To conclude the evening, gift tray favours for Queensway nursing home were made and a lovely, Christmas lunch was served by the ladies of unit one. The service at the Hensall United Church on Sunday was conducted by Rev. Don Beck with Mrs. John Turkheim at the organ. This was the third Sunday in Advent and the third ad- vent candle was lit by Dave Kyle; this candle is pink, in contrast to the others and signifies the joy in Christmas. The choir sang the anthem "Shepherds on the hillsid" and the title of the sermon was "And What of Us?" Hockey news Hensall has three hockey teams playing this winter - pee wees, bantams and midgets. Both bantam games were cancelled due to the weather last week, while the pee wees lost to Zurich 3-0. The Hensall boys played a good game,` in spite of losing, but Zurich came along stronger, scoring one in the second period and two in the third. CNIB canvass Eric Luther has advised the area canvass on behalf of the Canadian Institute for the Blind realized $1,325.15. He gratefully acknowledges the efforts of the ladies of the following groups: Carmel Presbyterian Church, Women's Auxiliary, Amber Rebekah Lodge and Women's Institute. r eather cancels many Holmesville events by Blanche Deeves United Church Worship service was held in Holmesville United Church on "Sunday at 1 p.m. with Sunday School in the church hall. Rev. John Oestreicher was in charge. Next Sunday, there will be a male choir. Personals The weatherman had many things in the area cancelled this past week. Mrs, Wm. Porter attended the annual board meeting of the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario which was held at the Lord Simcoe Hotel in Toronto from December 5 to 9. The volleyball teams of Goderich Township gathered at the home of Art Bell at which time the senior girls softball team held their draw. The winner of the afghan was Mrs. Dave Moore of Kin- cardi-ne. Bill Garrow of Goderich won a bushel of apples and Mrs. Helen Lee of Londesboro won two gallons of cider. The girls Wish to thank everyone for their support. Congratulations to Isobel and Don Harris, who became' proud grandparents again to another granddaughter. David and Sandra Orr of the White Carnation en- tertained their staff and families to a delicious smorgasbord dinner Sunday evening. Douglas Van der Haar gave a few words on behalf of the staff before gifts were presented to Dave and Sandra by Alison Postill and Janice Orr.
