Another Fraud Upon Farmers.
This time it is a "Wire Fence Man." He
calls upon the farmer to ask of him permis-
sion.to exhibit to the farmers of the vicinity
his hew wire fence stretcher, upon his farm.
In consideration for this privilege he will
build the farmer thirty or forty rods of good
fence u-herever he may want it, All that
he asks of the farmer is, to board him, to
go for the machine at the depot and pay the
charges on the machine, not over three dol-
lars, In order to have it all understood, the
farmer is asked to sign a contract to the
above things, written on a postal card,
which the fence man mails to his partner.
After the machine arrives, a new man turns
up to demand $200, the price of the ma-
chine. The farmer then learns to his as-
tonishment, that the 'contract' for board,
etc., that he was signing, was really an order
for the machine at the price of $200. This
last comer claims to be the attorney for the
company making the machine and by threats
of bringing a suit in court, forces some kind
of a settlement to his fraudulent claims.
Our injunction needs repeating once more :

cide upon the question of whether the Do-
herty organ which has been in use in the
school for some months on trial, should be

ported that the organ was not what it was
represented. The meeting decided by an
almost unanimous vote that the organ was
fully up to its representation by the agent
of the Doherty firm, and the matter of ex-
change was deferred for the present. From
ivhat we hear there seems to be considerable
wire -pulling to have the Doherty organ
rejected.

That celebrated entire horse, "Major"
owned by Messrs. Dow & Colquhoun, of
Exeter, died from inflammation on Monday
evg. The animal was in his usual good
health up to 5o'clock that evening, when he
was seized with a severe attack. Every-
thing possible was done to save him, but to
no effect ; he died about half -past nine.
The animal was valued at $3000, and the
loss is not only to be regretted by the pro-
prietors but by the farming community gen-
erally, as Major was one of the best horses
in Western Ontario, Be has been a prize
winner for a number of years, having never
been beaten. The proprietors have the
sympathy of the community at l trge, as well
as of horsemen throughout the district.
In commenting upon the conduct of
churches towards newspapers with reference
to soliciting free advertising, an exchange
says :—There is 110 reason whatever why
the churches should not pay what is fair for
such notices, the same as any busineas man.
A church is a collection of business men and
citizens, who singly support the press in
various ways, and who collectively are not
less able to do so when the interests of their
organization require it. It cannot be main-
tained' that the church is poor and tinder the
necessity of begging favors, when the mem-
bers that compose rt would think no more
of doing it for themselves than they would
think of making • a requisition on the
council for support. Then look at the un-
fairness of the thing to the publisher. A
chut'ch entertainment is got up, but the en-
tertainment it no use, unlace knowledge of
it be spread far and wide and the people in-
duced to dome and petronize^it. The news-
papers are imposed upon to the extent of $5
to $10 worth of notices, if they were charged
for in the regular Way, A large attendance
is the result. The publiehers give their
spade to that extent, which is as much their
stockenetrade as a merchant's geode on his
Ishelves,, and secure the success of this' enter-
s £aliment, The church coolly pockets the
profits obtained at the expense of the pub-
) fisher and expects him to be obliged for
being put in the way of such interesting
news,,, for' his paper. It waghandy to
fillrp with you know. This sort of thing
has gone,on until in many towns the church-
) es have„ tome to consider the publisher
elleelty if he hints at such a thing as tom-
! pensatiot.
