Goaltending saes Mustangs
by Bryan Marriage
Excellent goaltending last
weekend by both Clinton
goaltenders, Juergen
Hellman and Dean Ryan
enabled the Mustangs to
salvage three points in the
two weekend games.
Last Friday night in Clinton
the Port Elgin Bears were in
town and after 60 minutes of
exciting hockey action, the
teams left the ice deadlocked
again in a 2-2 tie. The Bears
opened the scoring in the
second period on a powerplay
goal by Mike Huber, with Bill
Irwin serving a roughing
penalty.
In the third period, Clin-
ton's Paul Helesic finally beat
Port Elgin's goaltender Dave
Rosener on a godlmouth
scramble assisted by Paul
Priestap and John Graham.
Port Elgin went ahead again
at the 15 minute mark of the
third period but the Mustangs
battled back at 17:07 of that
period. John Graham gave
Clinton the tie on a well
executed shot between the
legs of Port Elgin goaltender,
assisted by Pete Thompson.
Juergen, Hellman had 33
saves for Clinton.
Last Sunday afternoon, the
Mustangs travelled to
Walkerton to face the Black
Hawks who trail Clinton by a
mere seven points as we near
the halfway mark of the
season.
Dean Ryan played an
outstanding game for Clinton
as he turned aside 42
Walkerton shots in a 3-2
victory, 21 of them in the
second period. Walkerton
opened the scoring on a
powerplav early in the first
period before Steve Cook
retaliated. for die 'Stangs,
assisted by John Graham.
The Black Hawks scored
the only goal of the second
period as they blasted 22
shots at Ryan, while Clinton
managed only four on
Walkerton goaltender Dave
Nelsen.
Entering the third -period
and trailing by one goal,
veterans Tim McLean and
Steve Cook fired a pair of
goals to give Clinton the
victory, while Ryan closed
the door on the Black Hawks.
. The Mustangs next home
game this Friday, December
9 will be against the Listowel
Cyclones at 8:30 p.m. and
then on Sunday, December 11
the Hanover Barons will
come to town for a 7:30 p.m.
,contest.

Figure skating club news.
More badges were earned
on Saturday, December 3.
Shelly Hayter passed her
beginner badge.
The following list shows a
large number who passed the
second badge called stroking:
Robin Norman, Jason Ben-
nett, Melissa Whelan, John
Steveley, Angela Reid, Sherri
Preszcator, Derrick Foster,
Tanya Hart, Lana Jones,
David Jones and Sherri
Lavis.
Some further tests were
passed on the elementary
,badge, Linda Lockwood. Also
tests were passed on the basic
badge, Linda Lockwood and
Sue Ann Smith.
You're sailing right along
boys and girls.
Congratulations.
Since several skaters have
just completed the stroking
test, they may be interested
in what to learn in their third
test called elementary :
forward pumping on a circle
on two feet, complete a right
circle, stop, then complete a
left circle; backward skating
on two feet across width of the
rink; forward inside edges,
using proper push -off, cur-
ving from a line and back to
the line, first on the right foot
and then of the left foot;
forward crosscuts or
crossovers on a circle in both
directions. -
The purpose of ,this
elementary test is . to in-
troduce skating on curves, to
maintain backward motion
and to introduce . forward
inside edges.
So you can see boys and
girls, even by the third test
you will have accomplished
quite a bit, in some cases,
more skill -than mom or dad.
