The Colts now playing in the WOAA, with almost no returning players from last year, got goals from Bill Lee, Dave Archibald, Harvey Carter, Don Shropshall and Mark Fisher in their Mitchell debut and Archibald's second period goal proved to be the winner. On Sunday night, the Colts met a determined Monkton team and skating with them until the end of the second period, down only one goal 4- 3. But the roof fell in on the Clinton team in the third period, -as Monkton scored seven unanswered goals. Marksmen for the Colts were Harvey Carter and former Mustang Dave McClure with a pair. The Colts are idle until Sunday December 4 when the Mitchell Red Devils come to Clinton. Figure skating club news By Audrey Middleton The intermediates were hard at work on Saturday in preparation for some junior dance tests. A test day is being held this coming weekend in Stratford in which several of cur intermediates are registered. Activities in the senior section was not quite so bustling due to several ab- sentees. Instead Margaret and Brenda-Dupee and Peggy Jones were away making gallant efforts at the Western Ontario subsectional com- petition in Tillsonburg. Although they didn't place first, they didn't place last either. In fact they placed about centre of the pile which wasn't bad for a first try. Congratulations girls. Speaking of gallant efforts, folks should drop into the arena for a "real life" human interest story on Saturdays from 11 to 12 noon. In a colorful fashion parade, 70 to 80 youngsters tromp in, hoist themselves up on the benches and wait unconcerned while Mom or Dad laborously and patiently pull on and lace up their skates. Then its onto the ice, they trod in groups of 10 to 12 with their very own coach. For a busy 60 minutes they work strenuously towards skating perfection. Since there are many beginners, it would be wor- thwhile repeating the procedures which must be learned in order to pass the first badge called the beginners badge. The rules are: skate the width of the rink without falling; forward skating and glide on two feet the width of the rink ; forward skating and glide on two feet then bending the knees and grasping the outside of " the ankles, returning to a standing glide position; stopping, any skid stop such as snow plow or side stop. Since the Clinton Figure Skating Club only provides one hour for beginners, his parents should find extra ice time if possible. A beginner should skate for a short time but often, every day on the public skating arena schedule- Wednesday and Sunday afternoons in Clin- ton's case. Progress in skating depends on three main fac- tors; the skater's natural co- ordination; adequate in- struction; and useful prac- tice. The final score of 11-5 for Clinton did not tell the whole story of the game, as the Black Hawks, who remain in second place, seven points behind the Mustangs, played well for the first two periods hut couldn't contain the Mustangs in the final stanza. Walkerton scored the first two goals of the game before John Hart and Dave Bartliff notched a pair for Clinton at the midway mark of the first period. The Blaclr TT,,',,vL', pulled ahead again on a powerplay goal but Clint& captain Steve Cook tied the game in the last minute of play in the opening period. The Mustangs went ahead in the second period on goals by Neil Colquhoun and Dave Stephenson while Walkerton managed only one. The third period was clearly all Clinton as Greg Butler, Steve Cook Paul Helesic with a pair, Paul Preistap and Dave Stephenson all scored for the 'Stangs while Walkerton notched only one goal + a shorthanded effort by yne Hill. The Mustangs next two games are home games as Kincardire Kinucks come to town on November 25 and the pesky Port Elgin Bears come to Clinton on Friday December 2. The Clinton Mustangs hope to have f3ill Irwin back on the blueline this coming week as Bill's intention after playing for Stratford Cuilitons, OHA Junior "B" champions last year, are to help the Mustangs along the trail to an OHA Junior "C" cham- pionship. Another former Mustang in the news this past week is Rob Heard who now is currently playing for the Petrolia Jets and leads the Western Junior "B" scoring race. Rob incidentally won th OHA Junior "C" scoring itle in our Central division last year.
