November time
to clean garden
The, growing season may be
over but there is still plenty of
work to do in the garden, says
R 44' Gomme, Ontario
ministry of agriculture and
food horticulturist.
Annual flowers often
spread out over the summer,
taking over the grass around
flower beds. Use a sharp
spade to trim and re -shape
edges of flower and shrub
beds.
November is a good time to
hill up roses. Bring the soil up
around the crown of the plant
to help it weather the winter,
says Mr. Gomme.
"Some. home gardeners
may wish to use mulches
?round their tender plants.
Soil, peat moss, sawdust in
moderation and compost will
help protect plants over the
winter."
If you have been trimming
evergreens, Mr. Gomme
recommends using the
boughs as mulch around
plants.
Providing the soil in your
garden isn't soaking wet,
there is stili time to plant
flowering bulbs, including
tulips.
Before the winter sets in,
Mr. Gomme suggests
cleaning up and removing
leaves and plant tops to
discourage rodents from
damaging trees and shrubs.
He recommends painting
stems and trunks with
repellents containing
Thiram.
Heavy snow can break•lgng
boughs of shrubs and trees.
Tie the boughs together or
wrap trees or shrubs loosely
with burlap.
"Don't use plastic garbage
bags to wrap evergreens.
This causes an even greater
flux in temperature. The
worst thing for plants is
freezing and thirwing."
After your garden jobs are
complete Mr. Gomme ad-
vises gardeners to clean tools
by rubbing them with oil to
prevent rust. Clean out gas in
the lawn mower and apply oil
in the spark plug holes.
"A little work now will give
you a head start next spring."
Renovate cores
small towns told
Ontario's smaller com-
munities will gradually start
to disappear if action is not
taken to renovate their old
and rotting core areas, an
Elmira businessman said in
Toronto last week.
Don Brox, speaking to a
symposium on ,the problems
facing downtown cores
organized by the Ontario
ministry of housing, said the
responsibility for initiating
the action needed rests with
the merchants.
"The Lord helps those who
help themselves," he said.
"There has to be a grass-
roots movement among
merchants to get these
renovation plans under way."
To fend off major attacks
from large suburban shop-
ping centres, small town
merchants must organize
themselves and choose new
directions.
"We are talking about
survival," he said.
Most small towns, he ad-
ded, depend on the
assessment of core areas to
keep viable. If the stores and
businesses began to close and
move off into suburban malls
and plazas then many of
Ontario's small, historic
towns would begin to disi.n-
t!Zl;rate.
. "The process is already
under way in many areas of
the province," he said.
"It's no good just Tainting
everything up and waiting for
the people to arrive, you have
to have a master plan in
mind.' There has to be
something in the stores that
will bring people in." _
Sarnia Mayor Andy Brandt
handed out more advice to the
600 delegates attending the
conference, this time aiming
at some of the province's
larger city centres.
The problems are largely
the same, he said. Com-
petition from suburban
shopping plazas has done
critical damage to downtown
cores leaving the usual scars
of bankrupt businesses and
shuttered stores.
Problems associated with
downtown redevelopment, he
said, are now hugely com-
plicated and require long
hours of work and expert
care. i
"Don't ever take any short
cuts in the personnel you use
to talk to some of these large
developers," Brandt advised.
"Use expert people at city
hall and let them do the job.
-Try and keep the thing from
becoming a constant issue on
the council flrior."
Yes, it's now
in full swing e..
