Two weeks ago, Kincardine
hosted a firefighting school in
the town and about 40 firemen
from as far away as Tober-
mory came to participate in
the three day events
• However, last week The
Kincardine News revealed
.
that, for some unknown
reason, no firefighters from
Kincardine attended.
Mayor Harvey Palmateer
was unable to find out from
the public protection com-
mittee why no Kincardine
firemen went, but according
to Councillor Stu Mowry, it
was understood that three
men from the town would be
there. He also noted that the
$150 offered to them a week
maybe wasn't enough money.
The Listowel Banner
reported that Larry Deckert,
35, of Listowel was found not
guilty of the first degree
murder of Bernice Stewart,
46, of RR 4, Listowel.
It took the Ontario Supreme
Court jury 50 minutes to
acquit the man, who was
charged with the murder of
Mrs. Stewart on February 6.
The woman's body was found
in her car, partially burned
and dead from probably
asphyxiation, due to blood In

jaw which caused a lot of
bleeding.
In other topics, the Blyth
council recently, won't
provide $80,000 in loans under
the, provincial Home Renewal
Program.
The Blyth Standard
reported that the provincial
program had run out of funds
because of a heavy response,
however 'the province asked

Although Wingham may
lower the town's speed limits
to 40 kmh (25 mph) they will
have right to enforce the
limit.
The Wingham Advance -
Times reported that town
council learned that although
the town has complete
jurisdiction over the streets
and can raise or lower the
speed limits, they can only
retain fines for bylaws that
are violated under the
Municipal Act.
However, lowering the
speed limit to 40 kmh does not
come under the act and there
is no bylaw for that. The
ministry of transportation
and communication would

have to approve and pass a
law to allow the money to be
collected.
The St. Marys Journal -
Argus reported this week that
their town council recently
requested the Ontario Police
Commission to ' make full
investigation into the St.
Marys' Police Department.
The Journal -Argus asked
some councillors why the
decision was made and they
learned that recent rumours
about the department around
town prompted their decisions.
The council hopes to restore
public confidence in the
police.
The department was
questioned following charges
of assault laid against
Chief Ed Matheson last
August. He was acquitted of
the assault charge recently
and returned back to work on
the request Of council, but
still faces charges of
possessing a dangerous
weapon and pointing a
firearm.
Following a complaint from
Brussels' building inspector,
Gerald Exel, the village
council debated whether they
should accept an application
for a new inspector.
The Brussels Post ex-
plained that Exel told the
council that if they were not
satisfied with the job he was
doing, they could find a new
inspector. He said he wasn't
going to act as a policeman
for building infractions in
Brussels.
The motion to accept a new
inspector's application was
defeated after a tie vote
which was broken by Reeve
Cai Krauter.
The role of agriculture is
unlikely to change in Hay
Township in the forseeable
future, but there may be a
change from cash cropping to
more mixed farming if
economic conditions do not
improve.
Some 40 people learned this
recently at a workshop in
Zurich regarding the
secondary plan which is being
formulated in Hay Township.
The Zurich Citizens -News
reported to others that it was
also felt that building on
marginal land would enhance
its value and enable the
township to bring in more
revenues from the increased'
assessment.
Others felt that the higher
prices for marginal land
could discourage potential
farmers.
The Exeter council are
planning a bylaw which will
put a stop to a proposed
shopping centre northeast of
Highway 4 and 83 in-
tersection.
The decision was made,,
reported the Exeter Times -
Advocate, after a London
lawyer representing some of
the downtown - merchants
explained that .the centre
would cause a minor disaster
to other businesses in the
town.
He explained to council that
a recent planning survey,
done by the merchants,
showed that with the modest
population growth that a
complex like developer
Gerry Sprackman is planning
would not be needed in the
town until 1986.
Council accepted lawyer
George Paxton's proposal of
the freeze and plan to pass the
bylaw as soon as possible to
prevent any counter actions
from Sprackman.
The Mitchell Advocate
reported in their regular
feature, By the Way, that Dr.
Susan Tamblya, a Perth
County medical health officer
noted that in the past month
21 cases of Salmonella have
been reported in the county.
She explained that the
condition was prevelant
across the province but the
, number in Perth was ,ex-
tremely high. The illness is
said mostly to be caused from
poultry and dairy products.
In 11 of the cases that have
been so far reported, it was
attributed to eggs in baked
goods coming intor the county.
The problem is related to
cracked, dirty or raw eggs,
not whole ones.
Due to an increase in the
number of rabies cases in
Perth this year, the county
will be holding a free clinic
for Perth and Huron people
who want their cats and dogs
vaccinated. •
The Seaforth Huron
Expositor reported that since
January 1977 there have been
22 confirmed cases of rabies
in Perth, while in 1976 there
was only one case reported.
In Huron there has not been
as many cases, but it is on the
increase. In 1975, Huron had
46 confirmed cases, in 1976
there were only five reported
and this year, up until June,
only ,four cases were found.
However since that . ,time,
rabies have been discovered
in a number of foxes, tWo
cattle, one dog and one ,cat.
