CONFESSION OF WILLIE
SELL.
Wile Boy Murderer Tells Hew Re Killed
Hie Mother, brother and Sister.
Will Sell, the 16 -year-old boy who w
convicted last July of murdering his fathe
mother, brother and sister, near the to
of Erie, Eats., has made a confession,
which he says that his father, J. W. Sel
O well-toglo farmer, was killed by b
brother, and that he (Willie) killedh
brother to revenge his father, and efte
ward killed his mother and sister. T
murders were committed at night, and t
first information of the tragedy was giv
by murderer, who awakened a neighbor ea
told him some man was hurting his fath
and mother. The bodiee of the =relent
people were found ia the farmhouse wit
their throats cut from ear to ear and the
heads crushed. A, bloody hatchet A1
butcher -knife were found on a chair.. SM
picion rested strongly on the boyiearidsh
was arrested, tried, convicted and Sentence
to he banged He is now in the penite
tiary awiting the signing by the Governei
of the (Teeth warrant. She boy's confessie
is as follows :
"Mother and sister Ina had gone to bedFather, Waty mid I were still up, when th
calves got out and came up around th
house. Waty sat at the table reading an
father had just taken his coat and pants o
to go to bed, and told Waty to go and pu
the calves up. He said : 'Let Willie do it
I won't go out now.' Father said that h
should go, and Waty did not want to, an
while they were talking, I went out an
got the hatchet. which was sticking in
log outside the door, and came back to se
if Waty would go out with me. I got th
hatchet to nail up the calf pen. Father an
Waty were there quarrelling, and had be
come very mad. When I came in wher
they were, with the hatchet, Waty snatch
ed it out out of my hand and struck fathe
several times, at last knocking him down
When I saw what Wety had done I caugh
hold of the hatchet and jerked it out of hi
hands, and, striking at Waty, hit him o
the head and he fell down on the floor, anc
I supposed that killed him. Then mother.:
seeing.what was being done, jumped out of
bed, screaming, and, before 1 thought what
I was doing, I struck her. Ina my sister,
at that raised up in bed and screamed, and don't know why I did it, but I struck he
with the hatchet and she fell back. They
ere all lying quiet. I took off all my
clothes except my shirt and drawers, then
pulled off Waty's pants, raised him up and
arried him into the other room and put
w
him into our bed. After that I went back
nrl got the hatchet and pounded his head
11 to pieces. I felt mad at Waty because
e had killed father. I went to the cup-
oagd, got the butcher -knife and cut Waty's
ead nearly off. Then I went back into
ie other room and sat clown, and I did not
now what to do. Then I thought that if
ny of them should. come to life they would
y I killed Waty. So I took the butcher.nife and cat their throats to make sure
ork of it: I then blew out the lamp and
t clown for severrl hours, but at last could
a stand it anylonger and agein lit the
mp, and, putting on my clothes, ran over
Mr. Mendalls and told him some one was
t our house with a hatchet and had hurt
a and ma."
There has always been a . great diversity
opinion among the people as to whether
Villie Sell committed the murder. On the
ial there was no positive evidence, and
le State utterly failed to find any motive
for the crime. On the contrary, it was
P1
oven that Willie was an exceptionally
good boy, and that he and his sister Ina
were more than commonly fond of each
other. The neighbors all swore to the boy's
good disposition, and that he waa a favorite
in the community, while his brother Witty,
who was older than he, was not so generally
liked.

Some weeks ago there appeared in the

reason assigned for the mania being that
of the death of Mr. Sausburn. This is a

allow me to correct the error into which
your esteemed correspondent has fallen

altogether dangerous to herself nor family,
bUt her conduct intolerable. At times it is
said, she would take the notion that every
thing was poison and would eat nothing for
weeks; she would also smash breakable
articles to smithereens. In fact, we are
told, her conduct was so disgusting that the
f enily left the premises to her mercy.

The Zurich Robbery.
Last week, we made brief mention of the
fact that the general store of D. Steinbach,
of Zurich, bad been burglarized, and that
money and valuable papers had been stolen.
The thieves entered by way of the door,
and, proceeding to the safe, blew its door
off with the aid of powder. They then ab-
stracted the sum of $500, (not $2,000 as
previously stated) together with gold ,and
silver watches, chains, rings, and a host of
valuable papers. Several cciiistables were
engaged to work up the case, but being
unable to glean any intelligence as to whom
the thieves are, where they came from, nor
whence they went; the endeavor to capture
them was semi despaired Of. The prevalent
opinion of those diketerested is that the
act was perpetrated by "locals," from the
fact that a large and vicious watch dog,
which was in the store at the time, made no
effort, so far as could be jedged from his
uneoneerned mood nett Morning, to guard
the premises ; and also that notes end other
papers were Won: While, on the other
hand, had the burglaty been eaminitted by
strangers and experts, the dog would hive
been aroused, and, the probability is, that
the note§ mid papers Would not have been

Mr. Beatty: Mr. Liddicott who has been

for nearly three years, has resigned his
position; as he intends removing to Lon-

ably filled his position, ancl his departure

earnest worker in the vineyard of Christ,
and, wherever his lot may be cast, the
influence of his example and precept will

he is surrounded.

Huron Presbytery.
The following resolution shows the atti-
tude of the Presbytery of Huron on the
present aspect of the Temperance questi
on
in the county, as brought out at its March
meeting, in receiving the annual report on
Temperance, this report being based on
answers to the General Assembly's questions
from the sessions of the different congrega-
tions within its bounds. "That this Pres-
bytery continues its adherence to the Can-
ada Temperance Act, believing it as a Tem-
perance measure, to be in advance of a
license law, and that good has been accom-
plished by it noteeithstesalleeite -partial
failure horn non.inforeement. 'The Presby-
tery very much regrets this inadequate in-
forcement as a thing that ought not to be,
aud would urge upon the Government of
the country to perfect the Act and provide
adequate means for inforcing it, as the in-
different inforcement which the Act has
received in this country is prejudicial to the
moral interests of the community, as well
as dishonoring to our laws, which it is the
duty of the Government to. uphold at all
hazards. They also advise the people to
strengthen the bends of the officials under
the Act, in the performance of their duty
and not to recede from the Canada Temper-
ance Act, except in the direction of general
prohibition.
The Mystery Disclosed.
Last week there appeared in these columns
au item with reference to the sudden dis-
appearance of Timothy Fogarty. At first
it was generally conceded that he had been
drowned, while some people clung to the
opinion that he had "skipped the country."
As WC stated last week, upon the intelligence
of his disappearance, a search was instituted,
which was fruitlessly continued for many
days and finalle given up, the people gener-
ally concurring with those who had said
Tbnothy Fogarty invented the scheme as a
neaps to make good his escape from the
country. There were a few, however, who
lespaired not, and they resumed the search.
eVter scouring the river in vain for some
clistance around, the idea seized them, that
the body, if it had gone under, would not
ink, but would float at top of water until
t reached an air hole in the ice, when it
veuld go to the bottom, the air contained,
which caused the body to float, ithus escap-
ig. A search was made for an air -hole,
thich was found many rods distant from
he place where it was supposed the unfor-
unate man had fallen in. Eicrethe ice Was
leered away, and after dragging the river
or 0 few feet the body was brought to sur -
ace. The body was token to the late home

pread. The funeral which was largely at,
ended, took place on Friday, the remains
