oppy drive, parade highlight week
by Rene Brochu
On Wednesday evening, the
town streets were: covered
with Legion Members who
thoroughly canvassed the
town and surrounding area on
a Poppy Drive with the
largest turnout of men in
many years,
Poppy chairman Comrade
Russ Phillips was well
pleased with the response and
elated by the amounts
collected which exceeded all
expectations. Russ takes this
opportunity of thanking the
willing workers, but more
especially those persons who
ributed so generously.
ou no doubt know, these
fu'"`'" are used mainly to
assist needy veterans and
scholarships for those
students in need of veteran
families.
Last Saturday saw the first
Legion Dance in many
months. Although only 30
couples were present,
everyone enjoyed a delightful
'evening. The Orchestra was
excellent and gave us a good
variety of music favourable
to young and old. Thanks go
especially to Comrades Bill
and Gladys Chambers who
prepared the meat trays and
buns and served the lunch, to
Comrade Slim Lacroix who
prepared the cold slaw salad,
and to Ron Gonie who
prepared the scallop
potatoes.. Handling the bar
was Comrade "Hap"
McAlpine, while the door was
taken care of by Milt
Schrieber, and the ticket
seller was Mable Schrieber. A
special thanks to these people
as it gave the rest a chance to
participate in the evening's
activities.
Sunday was the church
service with 50 Members on
parade as well as 15 members
of the Ladies' Auxiliary. The
Legion Band and ^olour party
were in attendance.
The service was indeed
impressive and I'm sure all
Comrades present will agree
that it was a memorable,
heart warming experience.

Ordinarily our concerts are" presented at the Goderich District
Collegiate. We are pleased to announce, however, that this year Han-
del's"Messiah" will be presented at the North Street United Church, both
the seating and the acoustics are much superior and we believe the church
setting is most appropriate for the season.

Zone Commander Short
Campbell, president . John.
Deeves, First vice-president
John Semple, second vice-
president Slim Lacroix.
Parade Marshall duties were
carried out by our Sgt. At
Arms Percy Brown.
Poppy chairman Russ
Phillips was in charge and
again was well pleased with
the attendance and par-
ticipation of the Comrades.
Last Tuesday evening, a
pleasant chore was per-
formed by the legion when
Comrades zone commander
Short Campbell, president
John Deeves, first vice-
president John Semple and
Poppy chairman Russ
Phillips journeyed to
Huronview and presented the
home for the aged with two
wheelchairs, a Poppy Fund
contribution.
The administrator, Mr.
Archibald, was especially
pleased with the Legion's
generosity especially because
of the shortage of wheelchairs
in the home and thanked the
Legion on behalf of the
residents of the home.
Following the Poppy drive
last Wednesday evening, zone
commander Short Campbell
and first vice-president John
Semple attended a mem-
bership seminar at Lucknow,
a busy evening for these
gentlemen.
In up And coming events,
president John Deeves wishes
to remind all Comrades,
Ladies' Auxiliary, associate
and affiliate members as well
as all residents of the
surrounding area, that
Friday November 1 lth at 9:30
