The beautification and
promotion of the downtown
shopping area of Listowel
may get a boost by the
business people in the town.
The Listowel Banner
reported that the town is
considering a "self help"
project which concerns the
passing of legislation to
designate downtown Listowel
as a Business Improvement
Area. This would allow the
town to collect extra taxes
from the business properties
in the area.
With the extra tax money,
special beautification and
advertising promotions could
be made by the Board of
Management which consists
of at least one councillor,
along with a number of
business and professional
people.
The salmon in this area
seem to be getting bigger and
bigger. The Wingham
Advance -Times showed a
picture this week of two
young boys with their
overwhelming catch,
weighing 24 ;pounds.
The boys noted that the fish
was so big that they had to get
help from some older men to
bring their catch ashore and
by the looks on their faces,
the salmon wasn't easy to lift
for the photograph.
Despite th' fact that a
memorandum from the
Ontario Police Commission
stated that internal problems
were evident in the Kin-
cardine Police Force, some
town councillors and the
poli,:e chief are now saying
that the problems have been
cleared and everything is
running smoothly.
The Kincardine News
printed the memorandum in
its entirety in the paper last
week. The memorandum,
which outlined problems
found in the police depart-
ment, was met with mixed
reaction and at least one
councillor said it would open
old wounds:
Police Chief Bill Sweedland
explained to The News that
the problems had been solved.
and they had been blown out
of proportion in the OPC
report.
The Lucknow Sentinel
reported, that next Sep-
tember, elementary students
in Bruce County will start
taking French in grade five.
The Bruce County Board of
Education adopted the ex-
pansion of the French
program which will . give
students 1,200 hours .of
French instruction by the
time they reach grade 13
instead of the present 720
hours.
The cost to the elementary
schools, which includes the
hiring of seven new teachers,
will be $260,000.
Tentative approval has
been given to the Goderich
Trotting Association to
establish a Hot Stove Lounge
in the arena auditorium for
the Goderich Sailors games.
The Goderich Signal -Star
explained that the town
recreation board, gave their
approval for the lounge which
would be used at the Sailors
Friday night home games.
Approval also must come

Cooking squash
The colors of autumn are
reflected in the many shades
and shapes of winter squash.
Perhaps you may not serve
this delicious vegetable too
often as you may associate it
with a long cooking time. If
you have a pressure cooker,
squash can be ready for the
table in a few minutes.
Food .consultants at
Agriculture Canada
recommend following the
manufacturers directions for
using a pressure cooker. They
have, however, developed
cooking times based on 15
pounds pressure for six
servings of winter squash.
Acorn or Pepper Squash -
cut in half, add two -third cup
of water and cook six minutes
for medium (11/2 pounds)
squash, and eight minutes for
large (21/2 pounds) squash.
Butternut Squash - Cut in
quarters, add two -third cup of
water and cook seven
minutes. Cook 1/2 inch thick
rings in 1/2 cup water for three
minutes.
Buttercup Squash - Cut in
quarters, add 1/2 cup of water.
Allow three minutes cooking
for the green 'variety and five
to six minutes for the orange
type.
Hubbard Squash - . Cut in
pieces, add two -third cup
water and cook five minutes.
Food Consultants at
Agriculture Canada remind
• you that winter squash are an
excellent source of Vitamin A
and a good source of Vitamin
C.
from the Liquor authorities
and the league's schedule
must be finalized.
The Trotting Association
also noted through
correspondence that they are
willing to spearhead the
committee for grandstand
fund raising.
The Brussels Post reported
that Mrs. Barbara Watts has
been appointed Clysdale
Division Commissioner for
the Girl Guides of Canada.
Included in her jurisdicition
are seven districts; Stratford,
'St. Marys, Listowel,
Monkton, Milverton, Mit-
chell, Exeter, Hensall, Huron
Park and Brussels.. In this
area there are 1,100 Girl
Guides, Brownies, Rangers
and Cadets.
Over 300 acquaintances and
friends came out recently for
a farewell dance for Ken
Reaney, retiring clerk from
Logan Township.
The Mitchell Advocate
reported that Reaney served
as clerk for 25 years and
people from throughout Perth
and Huron came to honor
him.
Following a complaint from
residents, who say they are
being subjected to a barrage
of gun shots, Stephen
Township Council plan to ask
the Exeter Gun Club to move.
The Exeter Times -
Advocate reported that the
gun club will be asked to
move south of Waterloo
Street in Exeter. It is hoped
that a more suitable location
can be found, away from
residential areas.
After a lengthy trial, the St.
Marys Journal -Argus has
reported that Rolf Arthur
Droste, 34, of St. Marys had
been sentenced to two con-
current life terms after he
was found guilty by the
Supreme Court of Ontario of
first-degree murder of his two
children, Ralph Morris, 9 and
Jean Monique, 4
A third charge against
Droste, attempted murder
of his wife Shirley, is being
held in abeyance and no court
date has been set. For the two
murder charges, Droste will
not be eligible for parole for
25 years.
In other court business, the
St. Marys police chief, Ed
Matheson was 'found not
uilty of common assault in
provincial court.
The Journal -Argus noted
that the judge was not
satisified that beyond a
reasonable doubt
Matheson had delivered a
punch to Claude Riordan of
St. Marys.
The chief still faces charges
of possessing a firearm and
pointing a firearm. That trial'
has also begun, but was
postponed until January 27,
1978.
