Remembrance Day. To
remember or not to
remember is your choice -
that's right. But while you are
doing the choosing - take a
minute to think, that at the
time of two world wars there
were countless thousands for
whom there was only one
obvious choice - to serve their
country. Today every one of
us enjoy the benefits of the
choice they made. The
freedom we take for granted
was paid for at the highest
price of all.

Stuck in the middle
by Shelley McPhee
Welcome to the middle of the page.
I sit in this same spot every week, sometimes a little
up, sometimes a little down, Sometimes I move left a
column width or I get shoved to,the right by my friendly
competitor Town Talk, but like it or not, I'm always here
soniewher•e in the middle.
I'm decorated with a boxed effect and set in a wider
type to make the page look more versatile and to give me
a- limelighted position, Yet it's not the easiest spot to be
in, I must be careful to watch my language at times, so I
don't offend or mislead the youngsters who also read this
page, and I must keep my topics interesting enough to
attract readers of all ages, who often find themselves
turned to page -'
Anyway, I must accept the fact that I'm stuck in the
middle, rarely ever on, top, and luckily never at the
bottom, which cones to the paint of this column.
You see, I've been unintentionally lying to you for some
time now by the fact that I'm not "From Up Here",
neither in my position hi this page, and unfortunately not
in my life.
Originally, this title was given to my sound -off space
when I was on top cif things from my apartment. At that
time, I faced onto the main corner of Clinton and got to
see and hear all the action., day and night, whether I
wanted to or not.
. However,' due to my gypsy blood, or some' other
unexplainable reason, 1 Moved from my "high rise" onto
a ground floor par t[.ttOIsewhere in Clinton.
Since then,, I've hada fprti'ipeople jokingly accuse me of
being a • liar since •J'rr not "up here" anymore and
although I realized this, I opted to keep my column title
for the lack of something better to call it.
Anyway, since beginning this week's column which
was intended to tell you how it feels like to he in the
middle of the page and plan action to outwit my com-
petition, I've come up with. a change of mind and perhaps
a new title for my spot on this page.
since this seems to he my designated space, not that
I'm. complaining, and "From Up Here" is really not a
truthful or appropriate name, I'm going to tell Editor
Jim of my rash decision to change my column title. •
Now if only 1 could change my name to Ann Landers
and learn how to he a columnist, 1 might be headed for
the top.

My beef is with a record club
that had a special offer to its
members. By purchasing two
or more records they were
entitled to bonus coupons to a
Free record.
The catch"is, that to receive
this "Free" record, a person
has to pay mailing, handling
charges as well as sales tax. Is
this legal?
The Ontario Retail' Sales Tax
people say that, if an item is
really FREE then no taxes
can be charged on it. However
in your case, it seems to be a
little bit different because, you
purchased regular mer-
chandise which included
coupons that could be
redeemed as part payment.
Apparently in a case like this,
tax has to be collected .on the
total price of the advertised
item.
Sorry, but that's the way it
stands.

A blind friend of mine was
involved in an incident that
took place in an out of town
restaurant. He entered this
place with his seeing -eye dog
and was refused service: He
pointed out to the waitress
that Ontario law made
it illegal to refuse him service,
but all his pleas fell on deaf
ears!
Could you spell this act out in
• black and white, please, so
that others will become more
familiar with it.
The piece of Ieglislation that
you speak about cane into
effect in Ontario in January
1st 1976, and it does indeed
make it an offence to refuse
service to a blind person
accompanied by a guide dog.
The blind person though, has
to be carrying a white cane.

When we moved ` into our
apartment we signed a two
year lease but now a new
owner has delivered us an
eviction notice which
demands immediate ter-
mination to our lease. I have
told my wife not to worry, but
she is very upset.
Can you set her mind at rest,
please?
From all that you state in your
letter, it would appear that
your new owner has a great
deal to learn about being a
landlord. Unless he has some
very valid reason for im-
mediate eviction the new
owner of a previously rented
property buys that property
subject to all existing leases.
In other words, whether the
new owner likes it or not, he
has no choice but to wait until
your lease 'runs out.
