Two more wins
Ryan, Stangs tame Cyclones
By Bryan Marriage
The Clinton Mustangs,
notched two more victories
over the weekend when
outstanding goaltending by
Dean Ryan on Sunday night
in Listowel enabled the
Stangs to defeat the Cyclones
by a score of 5-3 for the
second time in two weeks.
Last Friday night in Clinton
.the Stangs also handed
Kincardine their fifth loss of
the season 6-4 when Pete
Thompson scored the winning
goal while Clinton was two
men short.
The Mustangs currently
lead the Central division of
O.H.A. Jr. "C" with five wins,
one loss and a tie.
Friday nights game in
Clinton also marked the
return of John Graham after
a one year absence and local
baseball star Greg Butler
played his first game as a
Mustang.
Clinton captain Steve Cook
opened the scoring for the
ocals and Paul Helesic
scored late in the first period
to send the teams into the
second stanza tied up at two
apiece,
The second period was
rather chippy, as both Steve
Cook and John Graham
received fighting majors and
the two teams recorded 46
minutes in penalties. Clinton
Went ahead by two goals
throughout the period as Greg
Butler notched his first of the
year and Steve Cook fired his
second of the game.
In the third period, the
teams settled down to play
some good hockey and with
Dennis Knox and Chris
Cossitt sitting in the sin bin,
Pete Thompson put on a
dazzling display of skating
and scored .what was to be the
game winning goal.
Two minutes later Kin-
cardine scored a pair of goals
in a 12 second span to pull
within one goal of the Stangs,
but Billy Smith notched an
insurance goal to end the
game on a 6.4 Mustang vic-
tory.
Sunday night in Listowel
with Tim McLean back in the
line-up it took only one minute
and 10 seconds after the drop
of the puck to put the Stangs
ahead when McLean notched
.his first of three goals for the
evening.
Steve Cook scored Clinton's
second goal late in the first
period on a hard slap -shot
that caught Cyclone net -
minder Mark Davidson
sleeping when he blasted the
puck between Davidson's
legs.
The story of the first period
and the game however was
excellent goaltending by
Dean Ryan as time after time
he robbed 'the Cyclone
shooters of sure goals.
McLean also opened the
scoring in the sceond period
to give Clinton a 3-0 lead
before Listowel finally got a.
pair of power play goals, one
of which deflected off
Mustang defenceman Dave
Bartliff's stick.
Steve Cook retaliated for
Clinton near the end of the
second period to give Clinton
its two goal advantage.
Both teams scored one goal
each in the third period as
Tim McLean received his hat
trick for the night.
This Friday night,
November 4, the Cyclones
return to Clinton for an 8:30
p.m. contest and then on
Bryan Williams, left, and friend Jacqui Draper awarded Scott Kay, Kelly Spencer and
Carrie Spencer with first second and third prizes in the Chestnut tournament held at
Buffy's on Saturday. Each winner received a cash award and the first two received
trophies -for their skill in demolishing chestnuts. (News -Record photo)

Figure skating news
by Audrey Middleton
Registrations piled higher
and higher by noon on
Saturday, October 29, the
first skating day for begin-
ners ,and juniors. The totals
now stand at 45 beginners, 30
' junior I, 12 junior II, 12 .in-
termediates and 10 senior's',"
one or the largest
registrations ever. We
welcome all new and former
members.
Some advanced skaters
from. the area attended an
amateur coaches clinic at the
Howick arena last Sunday,
October 30.
Since a heavy load of
responsibility rests on our
few amateur coaches; the
club is groping for extra
volunteer helpers. Are there
any former figure skaters,
with amateur coach training,
who would assist in volunteer
coaching for one hour on
Saturdays 11 a.m. - 12 noon?
The club would . certainly
appreciate your help. Please
call secretary Carol Fox 482-
9760. -
This Saturday, November
5, a consignment sale of new
and used skating dresses,
skates and other equipment
will be held at the arena from
8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anyone may
submit articles for sale. We
urge the customer -skater to
come an hour earlier than his
or her skating hour to allow
time for shopping.
The bake 'n rummage sale
was a resounding success on
Saturday, October 29. It even
looked attractive due to
donations of flower
arrangements from friends,
Mrs. Cliff Epps and Mrs.
Wilfred Jervis.
A raffle on a bushel of
,,,apples resulted in a win for
Mrs. Florence Oliver.
Those of you who couldn't
make it to the sale missed the
bar - the cider bar, that is,
with Lori Consitt,. Carol
Beane as bar tenders doing a
lively business. They also
managed the raffle tickets.
Barb Forbes, Mary Gibson
and Judy Johnston served at
the candy bar, while Marlene
Forbes, Anne Gibson,
Dorothy Johnston and
Dorothy Dupee made a very
co-operative team for the
tasty looking baking booth.
Marg Robinson, Catherine
Bennett, Barb Consitt and
Anne and Cheryl Beane
bargained with the customers
for "the price is right" in the
large rummage department.
Some excellent buys disap-
peared during the first 45
minutes and then 50 cent bags
could be bought and the buyer
could fill it with rummage
sale articles.
The club sincerely thanks
all who helped in any way,
club parents, friends and
customers in adding to the
success of the sale.
