REJOICING OVER THE RE-
CENT VICTORY.
Brilliant Torchlight Brheession.-Au )(m-
ullahs° Gatharing in the ,SIcti Ling Rink
A, Very Successful Banquet.
On Wednesday, 23rd February, when it
s became certain that Sir John Macdonald
and the Conservative G'coreenment had been
sustained, and that Mr, Robert Porter had
sacceedechn wresting the West Riding of
Huron from Mr. M.. Q. .Cameron, and Mr.
Coughlin had alsO retained his hold on
North Middlesex by an inereased majdity,
in defiance of all mean tactics iniaginable, it
was determiued to hold a demonstration in
Exeter, and to invite Mr. Porter and Mr,
Coughlin to take part. Before, making
prepttratioes, however, an levitation was
sent to Mr. Perter, but, owing to being
worn out by the campaign, he declined,
with the promise of visiting Exeter at au
early date. The matter was then deferred
Mdefinitely, to await word from Mr. Porter.'
A few days ago, Mr. Porter wired that he
would be with us on the 18th, and, aceord-
ingly, it was determined by the Young
Liberal Conservative Club to hold an iseie
promptu demonstration in the teller rink
on the evening of the 18th. Although but a
few clays were allowed the. promoters to
issue invitations and perform nuie hundred
and ninety-nine other duties, the arrange-
ments were very complete. The ramonnee-
ment that such a celebration was about to
take place, had a very limited pnblication,
from the fact that the posters did not reeeh
places for which they were intended until
the previous evening, and m some instances
not until the morning of the demonstration,
although they were sent out on the Monday
previous. But, notwithstanding this delay,
the people by some means got word, for at
5 o'clock the rigs began to pour in fast and
thick, until the streets were perfectly
thronged, all seeming anxious to view
the grand torchlight procession, which
was promised. As soon as the treble
from north and south had arrived
and the invited guests partaken of a supper,'
the committee, with thousands of people as-
sembled at the rink, where one of the grand-
est torchlight processions that has ever been
witnessed in any town in Ontario, was form-
ed, with about 400 torches. The cortege,
thus arranged, marched and met the firemerel
at their hall, when the march was continued '
for several squares, meeting the carriages
on Main -street, where the procession was
re-formed in the following order :-Bend,
who seemed to. enter into the spirit of the
affair, and played excellently; invited guests
in ,
in three .carriages, one John Hawkshaw'S
"fourdn-in ; firemen in uniform, about
175 Young Conservatives, the general pub-
lic, and several men on horsobsecle,. peeenne
ably pall -bearers for Mr. M. 'C. Cameron;
who has just been slain, all of whom com-
posed a hue of nearly a mile in length. The
maraballs were Messrs. Davis, Hyndman,
and Willis. The streets were lined with
spectators, who cheered the prooessionists
at various intervals. The imposing proces-
sion marched to the market, and thence re-
turned to the rink, where a large crowd had
gathered,, estimated to contain upwards of
3,000 pet -sous, many of whom were ladies.
There were seated. upon the platform :
Messrs. T. Coughlin, M. P, North Middle-
sex ; Robt. Porter, M. P., the hero of West
Huron; H. Fred. sharp, E. Sidney Smith,
H. A. L. White and Wm. Graham, of St.
Marys ; Fred. Johnston, Wm. Cam pbele
Captain McGregor, of Goderich ; E
Moody, of Clinton ; William Johnston:
of Blanshard ; Thomas M. Kay, Reeve,
and George W. Holman, clerk of Us -
borne ; Dr. Rollins, James Swenerton,
Geo. Moir and john White, of Exeter.
Short and pithy addresses were delivered by
Fred. W. Johnston, T. Coughlin, M. P.,
Frect Sharp, E Sidney Smith, 11. A. L.
White, and a lengthy address by Mr. Robt.
Porter, vi. P. Mr. Johnston created con-
siderable laughter, in rehersing a few of the
campaign stories. Mr. Coughlin thanked
the electors of Exeter for supporting him
and rolling up such a large majority; he
said that be would always, as he had pre-
viously done, vote for measures which he
thought for the best interests of his consti-
tuents and the country generally. Mr.
Sharp, thinkinees it an opportune time, re-
turned his hearty thanks to the people of
Usborne for the manner iu which they had.
worked. for him, and he said, although de-
feated he wonld again contest South Perth
with Mr. Trow, and win it too; he said he
had made an honest fight, and that if he
could not redeem the riding withont resort-
ing to low and unlawful tactics he did not
wish to enter another 6,ght ; but he heel
more confidence in the people of South
Perth, and that, if in the field where no
undue influences were used, he would cer-
tainly be elected. .A few remarks anent the
campaign closed his address. E. Sidney
Smith said that he was thankftil for the
invitation to visit Ex.eter, and now that he
was here mid seeing so Many fine-looking
yoeng ladies, he did not think he would
ever leave the place: • Not unlike Mr. Fred.
Johnston, who is also a. bateheior, he

adies for some minutes, Mr: Smith took

report, but suffice to say that the affair
throughout was of the most brilliant. charac-

mittee of management. There was one
'striking feature about the demonstration,
i. e. that there was no yelling or unseemly
bluster, which generally characterizes rather -
legs of less ptetence. Neither were there
any drunken men.

mother was busily engaped in doing the
weekly washing the cliilcl came to her

conformity with the earnest request, Mrs.
Harris thoughtlessly placed a pitcher con-

she had busing in the water, upon the
stove hes and proceeded to get the

child a "p ce." During the absence of
Mrs. Harris, the little girl, mistaking the
contents of the pitcher for milk; took a
hearty drink. The danger in which the
child had placed itself was at once per-
ceived, and medical aid sought, when;
after the administering of an emetic which
acted promptly, it was thought quite out
of danger. For several days, however,
it was low, but careful attention being
given, the child has almost recovered.
