On Thursday last, Samuel R. Vail, a

not being able to manipulate an axe as well
as he can the leader messengers of thought,
he had the misfortune to cut his foot. In

At a meeting of the trustees of Hyde Park
school the other day, a motion was passed
to have the "Scriptural Readings" ejected
from the public school. It must be remem-
bered that all the trustees are Reformats.
It will now be in order for the Reform press
to chasten the trustees of the above school
for their action in disobeying one of the
principles of the party.
We are glad to notice that our genial
friend, Mr. R. Seldon is able to be about
again. Some weeks ago he stet with a
severe although possibly slight accident. It
appears thatwhile ascending a flight of stairs
he stepped ped upon sewing needle which
penetrated his foot to some depth,
and
broke. At the time pieces of both ends
were extracted, but the centre of the needle
cpuld not be found. He was compelled to
keep the house for some time, but is now at
his post. _
Detroit is notorious as a cock -fighting
centre, but, if rumor be true, it will have a
rival of 210 mean import before long. The
story goes : A few days ago several per-
sons of Exeter secreted themselves with a
couple of game roosters and after betting on
the result allowed the birds to engage
in a mill. They fought spiritedly for some
time, until one of the owners observing that
his bird was faring the worst of the battle,
picked it up and departed, leaving the
sequel to be settled by the sports.
On Tuesday forenoon, while Mr. George
Blatchford, sr., of the Thames Road, near
Exeter, was in the field at the rear of his
barns, his attention was attracted by the
howling of a hound, and, upon turning
round, was somewhat startled to notice a
fine large deer glance by him, closely follow-
ed by the hound. It was going in an east-
erly direction, possibly having been chased
from the swamps in Hay township. It is
thought that the animal was aroused by the
clog only, as there were no huntsmen in its
pursuit.
On Monday evening last, while a popular
young grocery clerk was accompanying a
couple of young ladies home from a Mis-
sionary meeting, he missed his footing and
fell between the side walk and fence, mak-
ing a great deal of fun for the passing crowd,
and to make it even more perplexing for the
poor lad, the boys around him shouted,
"hurry, or you'll lose your girls I" pausing
him to get greatly excited. After recover-
ing himself, he joined his lady company,
in a state of bewilderment. The (Linage
done the fence is estimated slight.

The missionary services held in the two
Methodist churches in this village were of
a very interesting and satisfactory charac-
ter. The sermons and speeches of the depu-
tation, the Revs. W. McDonagh and A. G.
Harris, were very much appreciated. With
the exception of last year, when the appear-
anceof an Indian Missionary from British
Columbia, with his many Indian curiosities
and thrileng narratives of missionary life
among the Indians, drew large crowds, the
attendance was far ahead of previous years.
Mr. Harris's two speeches were upon the
Mission field of the dethodist church, and
the benefits accruing from missionary oper-
ations in general, while Mr. McDonagh
discoursed iu his own inimitable style, on
the missionary character of Christianity,
.and especially eciallY
of that form of it
called
Methodism, He showed from the testimony
'of eminent men unconnected with Metho-
dism, how other branches of the church of
God have been stimulated and quickened by
the operations and successes of the Metho-
dist churches throughout the world. By
similar testimony he showed that of 100
missionary societies, the missions of the
Methodist church in Canada are the most
inexpensively administered of any of them,
and that for the amount contributed that
church has dollar for dollar a larger number
of missionary agents employed than any of
the other 09 missionary societies, whose
operations were examined and coutrasted
with: its own A fact very gratifying to the
Exeter Methodists was clearly brought out
by the Rev. J. Graham in the meeting on
Tuesday night, viz :—That with the sole
exception of the Queen's Avenue church, in
London, which is the largest and wealthiest
in the London conference, the two Exeter
churches took the lead in sustaining the
:made of the missionary society, the average
contribution per member ranging next to
those of that wealthy church. We learn
thav this year also the Exeter churches bid
fair to sustain that very honorable position.
