"At cross country I liked the running and competing against other schools. I also liked meeting new friends from other schools who co- operated with us." Cindy Renner, grade 6. "Well, the day finally came. After a month of grunting and groaning, I was on the bus and turning in a bumpy laneway into a spot sheltered by trees in the Hullett Conservation Area. We walked around the course and got ideas on how to save a few steps. The start of the race began with a burst of energy which lasted about one hundred feet. After about a mile, I had passed two runners. I lost my shoe in the mud once, but managed to keep my position. The last half mile was the hardest because I was worn out and got a cramp. I still held my place and came in 33 out out of 40. The track was kind of muddy but otherwise the, grunts and groans from exercises paid off because 1;,. was able to finish the course and know that I'nz not quite the slowest runner in. the area." - Barry Turner, grade 7 "I liked cross country because there was a good long run and lots of par- ticipation."
