Clinton News-Record, 1977-10-13, Page 13111) Tour Netherlands Mr. and Mrs. Henry Vos returned a week ago Monday from a very enjoyable vacation- in the Netherlands. They visited with Mrs. Vos' sister and travelled ex- tensively throughout the country. They -also. travelled through West Germany, and spent a week in Vienna. While in Vienna they took four tours, isit.ing the Shonhun Palace, which has 4,000 rooms; the Belvedere Palace, and the birthplaces of some of the famous composers. They attended a concert in the concert hall where Johann Strauss had per- formed, an organ concert in St. Stephen's Dome, and the Vienna Opera House, where they heard the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. One tour took them to the Vienna Woods, which have been immortalized in the music of Austria. Socials Congratulations to Danny and Shirley Taylor on the birth of their bouncing baby boy, Christopher Wayne. Mrs. Florence Elliott has a little grandson, Matthew Roy, born to Ross and Dawn. They are moving on' the 21st to a farm. near New Liskeard, where Ross will carry on his . business of ''shoeing horses 0 and will teach the trade in the local college. 250.attend supper Nearly 250 people were served a delicious turkey supper at Varna United Church on Wednesday evening. The October meeting of the U.C.W. was held the following evening, v'with a good at- tendance. The Thanksgiving worship, service was led -by Dorothy Ostrom, Lorna Johnston, Joan Beierling and Elva Webster. Dorothy read an article from Chatelaine magazine, "India -- Disaster is a Way of Life", written by 0 N .0 0 Vanastra by Meryl Thomas Resource Centre The Vanastra Resource Centre held an afternoon meeting on October 6 at which three new steering committee members were appointed. The new members are Ginny Floyd, Maeta Cook, Meryl Thomas and Art Hallam with Joy Langon as the alternate member. Chris Martin, chairman of the Resource Centre, spoke on what has been ac- complished during the past few months and also about the plans for the upcoming year. The community library opened its doors last Tuesday evening at the Vanastra Christian Church. Volunteers are still needed to help staff the library, so if you have a day free a month, please contact Mrs. MaetP Cook or Mrs. Meryl Thomas. Without more volunteers, the library Janet Lunn (a writer of children's books) following a visit she made to India. She told of the great poverty in many parts of the country and of the govern- ment's inability to cope with overwhelmir* problems of unemployment, housing, and the rapid population growth of one million people every 26 ,;;days, added to the 626 million in°the country now. Many thousands spend the night sleeping on city streets. Temperatures when she was in the northern cities were near those we have been experiencing lately, and many are dead by morning, victims of starvation and exposure. Most well-to-do people learn to ignore the starvation and squalor they see around them. An invitation was received to attend a ,.hank -offering meeting at Wesley -Willis Church in Clinton on October 16 at 8 p.m. Dr. and Mrs. D. Palmer are the guest speakers. An Enrichment Day (formerly called a Regional Meeting) will be held at Ontario St. Church in Clinton on Tuesday evening, October 25 at 7:15 p.m. A table loaded with the fruits of the harvest was attractively arranged by Ivan and Margaret McClymont for Sunday',s worship service. Flowers were from the funeral of Rev. Taylor's mother. Mr. Taylor an- nounced that beginning on October 23, in place of his regular sermons, he will be speaking on our basic beliefs, along the line of the course of study fqr new communicants. Next Sunday, October 16, Goshen United -Church will celebrate its anniversary with worship at 11 a.m. Guest preacher will be Rev. Anne (Graham) Langford; and there will be special music. Cubs and Scouts Cubs wij,l now be held on Thursday evenings at 6:30 and Scouts on Monday evenings, at 6:3ti0. Both groups will continue to meet at the Recreation Centre., This weekend, both the Cubs . and Scouts will be selling apples for apple day. Mr. Millson took 19 boys and Mrs. Cooke took 17 girls. The Hullett boys placed second and the girls placed sixth, Grade 3 fieldtrip On Tuesday, October 4, the grade three class set out on a field trip to the woodlot on the Blind sideroad. The purpose was to collect ants and study animals in the woodlot. This tied in with their environmental studies. Grade 8 fieldtrip On Wednesday, October 5, the grade 8 class went on a fieldtrip to the Maitland Block. When everyone was done, they enjoyed a cookout. Grade 5 assembly On Friday, October 7, the grade 5 class presented an assembly on fire prevention. The reason for this was that October 2 to 7 was "Fire Prevention Week". The class, under the supervision ` of Mrs. Cooke, presented t vo skits. The assembly was enjoyable and taught the pupils more on fire prevention. Unicef This year, the spooks of Hullett Central will be carrying around Unicef boxes on Halloween night.
