Autumn leaves - the colours
are herr - but there's
something missing this fall -
the crisp, dry leaves
scrunching underfoot. And
who enjoys raking soggy
leaves from a saturated
lawn? .
However,. those of us who
have been spared watching a
bean field drown before our
cry cy,es shouldn't complain

- The father of the late
Jabez Rand, also "Jabez"
was a blacksmith with John
Johnston in the block behind
the Clarendon Hotel. There
were two John Johnstone in
Clinton ztnd one who was a
.retired farmer, ' lived on
Rattenbury Street and was
known as "Gentleman . John
J.", Probably to distinguish
him,from the ' other John.
Thee was an amusing story
of Gentleman John who was
splitting wood in his backyard
and caught, his axe in the'
clothes reel. He was so mad
he chopped the reel down but
was told by his wife to replace
it immediately! (Good for
her.)
- Regarding the "Clinton
Foundry", This was the name
by which it was generally
known. Although the
'manufacture of threshing
material was always its main
and only business in later
years, it was originally
established to do general
work as demand for threshing
mills was in its infancy and
the Clinton branch was made
to supply needs which the
lack' of railway or even real
roads prevented. Fingal was
the original shop and as it was
75 miles away from Clinton
and the rest of the Huron
Tract, it was cheaper to build
a branch here to speed two or
three days trucking
,machines.
Finally - being a newspaper
closely related to advertising,
we like the following, taken
from the August 1977 edition
of Printer and Publisher,
courtesy of Sandra Cassidy,'
publisher of the giveaway TV
Facts, in Barrie, Ontario. It
goes like this
"'Why is it? _A man wakes
up in the morning after
s le r . mg in an advertised bed,
in advertised pyjamas. He
11 bathe in an advertised
b, wash with advertised
s ap, shave with an ad-
vertised shaver, and. have
advertised juice, cereal and
toast (toasted in an ad-
vertised toaster), and put on
advertised clothes,and'glance
at his advertised watch. He
will ride to work in an ad-
vertised car, sit at an ad-
vertised desk, smoke ad-
vertised cigarettes and write
with an advertised pen. Yet
this same man hesitates to
advertise, saying that 'he
doubts advertising ,pays. Oh!
Finally, when his, unad-
vertised business goes under,
he will advertise it for sale."

From up here
By Shelley McPhee
I've always been a television fanatic and often have the
boob tube turned on from the early morning exercises
until the national anthem is sung at the end of the day,
when I'm home.
Although there is a great selection of programs to
choose from in a day, I must admit that one of my
favourite shows is Bugs Bunny.
For yeasts I have fiendishly plotted on how 1 could
casually stroll into the TV room and quickly, flick the
stations to see the crazy wabbit outwit Elmer Fudd. In
desperate times I've had to use more di iect methods to
change the station, An elbow in the teeth has been known
to work wonders.
However, I am not alone in my loyalty to Bugs and
when the show was first cancelled, a flood of hate mail
was sent to ABC by other irate fans.
The main attraction of Bugs Bunny is obvious. He is not
just a pretty face, but under that- grey. fur is a talented
and witty character. Bugs can perform a number of
acrobatic feats with his nimble body'and ears and his,
whiskers act like antennae when Elmer Fudd or Daffy
Duck are around.
Bugs' popularity has_b,een discussed by psychiatrists.
They claim that people watch him because he's a winner
and that compensates the viewer for personal defeats. It
has also been noted that Bugs dresses up in women's
clothing They must have tuned in when he was dressed
up as a southern belle, using a breathy voice to deceive
Yosemite Sam by accidently knocking.himoff the boat
when he got fresh.
The cast really tops off the show. Tweety Pie with the
wide Goldie Hawn eyes and huge yellow feet seems in-
nocent. Tweety is protected by the sweetest little old lady
with the meanest umbrella in cartoonland. She will•stop
at nothing to save her little bird from the jaws of
Sylvester the cat.
Then there's Daffy Duck. He is at the peak of comedy
when he loses his beak and becomes a black bowling pin.
In"the meantime, Sylvester and his son (a miniature
version), have fights with giant mice, that ,are really
escaped kangaroos. But dear old dad lives up to his
image and rarely backs down from the punishment and
nasty blows of the playful kangaroo, while junior wat-
ches from the sidelines and cheers; "That's my pop,
that's my dad."
I'm no sure why Bugs Bunny has so many fans and his
popularity remains a mystery. The real problem is how
to lure the rest of the family away from the TV so I can
help Bugs through his calamaties of the day.

I purchased a purebred
Chihuahua in May '76. I, as the
owner, completed and sent the
registration papers along with
a cheque to the Canadian
Kennel! Club in Toronto. This
cheque was promptly cashed
but to date have heard
- nothing, in spite of writing
them.
Would you be kind enough to
see of you can get me some
results as 1 do want to breed
the dog.
We wrote the Canadian)
Kennel Club and since then
our reader has received an
acknowledgment from their
registration division.
Unfortunately however, it
does little to ease her mind as
it still leaves doubt as to
whether the dog" is actually a
registered purebred or not.
We are prepared to make a
personal call if our latest
letter doesn't clarify the
situation.
