Some 1,75 ratepayers were concerned enough to sign a petition requesting this., and 30 of them went to Bayfield Couneil to present •their petition. • Four of the nine members appointed by council laSt. gust were brave enough to pear, along with Reeve Ed ddleifson and advisor Nicholas Hill, just to make a quorum. The committee has also received a lot of flack. It has been said .;that the committee is controversial and it's better not to be in it. Others have said that they don't want anyone telling them what to do with their own homes. It's 4 also been said that those summer people would like us to live in log houses and they're only here for two months of the year. Some say that young people aren't interested in those old houses and anyway those houses could just fall down. That is what the committee has heard, just for openers, and in all honesty tend to 8• a ree with some of it. n the other side of .the , all will agree that our village is beautiful. Most of the homes in Bayfield are privately owned and so well cared for, each possessing wseal individuality. Yesteryear "summer people" closed their doors on Thanksgiving Day not to • return until the following May and one small boy noted, "They don't -even go, down to Honey's." Hence the year round community only came to know a few of them. Today, one cottage after a4other is being converted into winter homes and the "summer people" come on Ito weekends through the winter and 'they are here to stay as permanent residents like Gwen Pemberton,. Rob :and Doris Hunter, Jack and Peg Tillman and this year the Beatty's.- We may live in glorified cabins .but, we certainly have all the amenities. As for the young people, we can't define young too clearly, but Kelso Fitzsimons has just purchased the old MacGregor " house from Donnie Hat for his bride. Arch and Ruth Andrew have the Maggie Scotchmer house and Fraser and Mary Ellen Fellows have bought the Johnston cottage and so it. gsses,, new life in old dYvellings. Arch and Ruth Andrew love their new home and wouldn't part with the Victorian treilage or the lovely peeked eaves. They would love to know where that unique glass in their front door came from. It has the rose, the sham- rock, the thistle and the leek on it .< How lovely patriotism - was. Please close the door gently 4 when calling on the Andrews. Rob artd•'Doris Hunter are most happy to have their aged dwelling designated by the conservatory groups. Their daughters resisted any changes to the house, even their seven-year-old daughter wants Bayfield House, to stay that way: There is youth interested in old houses. ' Arch Andrews said yes, 'when asked if he would consider having his house to be designated. Now, we all love the Main Street as it was three years ago, we shake our heads over the changes anti watch with apprehension any building on it. We do know, more or less, that people have to live in comfort in their homes. Bill Gammage is building, but he is doing so at the back of his store and is wondering what else he can do to make his property fit into the scenery. Pat and Wynn Graham did such a good Job of expanding their store last year,. no one can see it from the street. Surely a., man like Doug Sinnamon must be trying his best, to make his extension fit into the streetscape. Really until now, that block has been the one unspoiled in the business section. The store is so attractive with its nise new paint job and we are sure that the Sinnamons ' are well aware of this and of public opinion. The LACAC committee would value your opinions. Do talk to any member and come with constructive suggestions. Meanwhile, .look around you. Have you looked under the trees in front of Walter Westlake's and admired that lovely treilage? How the red color enhances it on the grey building.
