Despitplay, soccer club losing
• By Rosemary Armstrong
The CLinton'Soccer Club is
facing relegation to the Third
'Division of London,, and
District Soccer League
despite the fact the team is
playing some of its best
soccer ever.
In the past weeks some
heartbreaking decisions have
gone against them when in
fact the team played well
enough to win. q
This Was `the ease on
Saturday against' ' London
Portuguese here in town,
during a torrential rain sto"r'm
which lasted the 'entire game
and saw Clinton outplay •
league - leading Portuguese
for most of the first half. -
Alex Harrett scored ^first
for Clinton after only - five
minutes" play. Portuguese
went storming up the field
and retaliated by equalising.
In the meantime Clinton''goal
keeper Gary Hesslewood was
ejected from the game for
allegedly kicking an opponent
and Clinton was reduced to
ten men for the remainder of
the game.
Grant Clark substituted in
goal and did a remarkable job
under the worst possible
conditions. At times he was
seen sliding 20 feet through
the mud, but always came up
with the ball.
Meanwhile, Clinton kept. on
the attack and Bill Cantelon
made one 'of his famous
dashes up the right wing and
crossed a beautiful ball into
the Portuguese goal mouth
where Brian Smiley',
Newington was lying in his
favourite position waiting to

tap the brlI' into the net to put
Clinton in the legd by 2-1.
Once again, homwever,
Portuguese - stormed right
back and scored the
equaliser.
. The two teams turned
round at halftime without a
break and played their hearts
out while slithering through,
thequagmire that was the
field.',,
It seemed as if the game
would end in a draw - a fair
result for two teams playing
in 3 these adverse weather
conditions.
This was not to be for
'.Clinton, as Portuguese turned
the pressure on and kept up a
near constant barrage on
Clark in goal.
Two minutes from full time
this pressure paid off as 'they
scored the winner to make the
final score 3-2 for the visitors
