Women in agriculture
The Ontario Federation of
Agriculture wants to en-
courage women to take a
more active part in the
organization, according to its
president, Peter Hannam.
"The women in our
organization are a tremen-
dous source of brains, talent
and ability, and I don't think
we're using them enough",
Mr. Hannam said Thursday
in a speech to the Huron F of
A in Brucefield.
Mr. Hannam said the
organization's constitution
should be amended to make
it easier for women to vote
and hold office.
Under the present con-
stitution only one vote per
paid membership is allowed.
The membership is usually
registered under the man's
name in a farming couple.
meaning only he can hold
office and vote.
In addition, the constitution
has forbidden proxy votes, to
avoid the possibility of
someone fathering a large
number of proxy votes before
an election, Mr. Hannam
said,
But the no proxy rule has
also made it difficult for a
woman to share her
husband's vote and play an
active role in the Federation.
Mr. Hannam said he in-
tended to seek amendments
which would give women
more chance to participate
but would still prevent the
possibility of pre-election
proxy vote gathering.

Joint housing survey
A survey wduld assess
housing needs in Seaforth and
the. Townships of Tucker -
smith and.McKillop may soon
be underway, supervised by a
joint`tommittee of the three
councils. :The posSipility was
discussed "inSeaforth
•recently at a, meeting Of
TON3ship, reeves and coun-„
eillors withSearprth Council.
Though no decisions on the
matter were' taken, the
councils agreed in principal
that a joint committee should
be set up to administer a
survey. Further discussions
will.he held early in October.
Seaforth mayor Betty
Cardno told the meeting there
were two ways to initiate a
survey of housing needs.
Councils could pass a
resolution asking the Ontario
Ministry of Housing to con-
duct the survey for them, or
they could request that the
Ministry provide funding for
a survey conducted by the
municipality. Mayor Cardno
favoured the latter method,
saying councils should use
what power they can instead
of passing things on the
higher forms of government.
The two Townships councils
agreed the survey should be
done under thesupervision of
a local committee.
Seaforth clerk Jim Crocker
told the councils the Ministry
would proviie up to $5,000 for
the survey. The money would
be used to cover the cost of an
outside consultant.

Wrest to Tuckersinith and
McKillop Townships because
at present no such houAng is.
available in the Townships.
Though construction of al -4
unit senior citizens c.omplex
on John Street in Seaforth is
slated to begin in the near
future,'there is a definite
.need for more senior citizens'
housing within ' the, town"
according to Mayor Cardnp,.
-The new project was initiated
after a 1975 housing surVey
conducted by the Ministry of
Housing at the Town's
request.
. A joint survey with
McKillop and Tuckersmith
could benefit Township
seniors if it determined there
a ne€d for subsidized

housing.
At present, senior citizens
from Tuckersmith and
McKillop cannot be ac-
commodated in the Seaforth
complexes, because there is
no loss sharing agreement
between the Townships and
the town. Under Ontario
Housing Corporation
guidelines, the town must pay
71/2 percent of any operating
loss from a senior citizens
housing project within its
jurisdiction. Before township
seniors could be admitted, an
agreement that Tuckersmith
