Ramblings from the races
Jewitt wins driver's title

Dennis Jewitt bettered his
driving triple of last Sunday
to come through with four
winners last Sunday Sep-
tember 18 at Clinton Kinsmen
Raceway to win the driving
championship.
He gave his own Champion
Hit his third win of the year in
the first race. Hit also has one
second and three thirds from
11 'starts this year. He was
first across the wire with
t-lullet Rose, owned by Ed.
Bezaire of Seaforth, in the
third, She now has a standing
of four wins, one second and
three thirds from 10 lifetime
starts.
Dennis drove Dilly Dares to
his ninth win win of the year
in the $1,500 Preferred Pace
for owner Wayne Horner of
Brucefield. He has a record of
2:04,1 and earnings of $11,049
already in 1977.
R.H. Arnie, owned by Ron
and Helen Swartz of Lucan,
and trained by Walter Oster
in Clinton, as is Hullet Rose,
was the fourth winner with
Dennis on the bike.
Frank Dam drove the six-
year-old Scarlet Wave trotter
Scarlet Walbob to a second
place finish for owners
Walter and Robert Daer of
Goderich in the second.
Janey's Ready, owned and
trained by Cliff Walsh of
Brussels was third with
Frank MacDonald up in the
fourth. John Muir finished
fourth with Jeffrey Hi for ,
Dale Kennedy of Seaforth. ,
Muddy Knight was second
with Ron Williamson driving
in the fifth. He is owned by
'Jim -McLeod of Seaforth and
Carroll Browning of Toronto.
From 33 starts this year, he
has six wins, four seconds and
five thirds for $5,784 to date.
Pebbles Girl, owned by
George Feagan and Gerry
Roebuck of Goderich was
'fifth.
In the sixth race, John Muir
was, a winner with Geo's
Honey, owned by Robert S.
'Kerr of Dorchester, Jason
Direct finished third for co-
owner Randy McLean. Harlo_-
Champ was fifth for Harold
Gibbings and Ernest Brown.
Melo Victory, 'a two-year-
old colt by Tarport Arnie -
Belmont Kelly, had his first
lifetime win from four starts
with Gerry Roebuck on the
bike. He is owned by Fred,
Harold and Norman Jewell of
Goderich and is a brother to
Melo Knight p, 2:05. John '
Muir was third with Waverly
Don for owner Les Campbell ,
of Seaforth. John Jewitt of.!
Londesboro finished fifth with
his Skippy Del.
Dianne Camp won' the
eighth race with Ron
Williamson up for Ted
Lamont of Waterloo. Tony
Bay,'owne4 by Ross McEwan
and Lorne Brown was second
for driWet'Frank MacDonald.
Dennis Jewitt was fifth with
Comrie, owned by Harry

Hodgins.
Irish,a Hanover, owned by
Lorne 'Tyndall of Clinton, was
third in the tenth race with
Frank MacDonald on the
bike. She now has four wins,
four seconds and Blur thirds

this race.
This coming Sunday,
September 25 will be the final
day of racing at Clinton
Kinsmen Raceway for 1977.
This will be ladies' day with
all, ladies admitted free. Also
fetured will be 2 'special
Pony Races; plus a free draw
for a Bulova Watch donated
by Anstett Jewellers, Clinton.
There will not be any
qualifying races this week.
Post Time is 1.30 pm.
At Flamboro on September
14, Bobby Tar was second in a
2:05.1 mile for owner Jim
Riehl of Goderich,
Friday night at Elmira,
Verdun Vanstone drove Bay
B. Hayfee to a fourth place
finish for Holmesville Valley
Farms. .Dennis Jowitt
finished first with Adorable
Luck, owned by Larry Baird
of Hensall, for her second win
.last week. Truanna Duke,
owned by Wayne Horner of
Brucefield, was also a winner
with Dennis on the bike in the
sixth. He finished second with
Wayne's Dilly Dares in the
ninth.
Margies Girl finished
second in a 2:02.2 mile at
Mohawk on September 16 for
owners Ken Parke of Zurich
and John Lester of Forest.
At Hanover on Saturday
night, Claybrook Romeo was
a winner in 2:11,4 with Randy
Henry driving for owner
Charles Brindley. of Goderich.
JanetEExpress had her second
win ih a row ' when she was
first in a 2:09 mile for ,Beryl
and Bob Faulds of Clinton,
At Dresden the same'night,
Johnny Diller won the first
race in 2:09, while Alfalfa Bill
took the tenth in 2:07.
Crash Landing was second
in a 2:02.1 mile mile at
Mohawk for owners Ron and
George Feagan. Quick
Almahurst finished fourth in
the seventh for owner Bill
Fleming of Clinton. Bill's
Shalako N. was a winner on
Sunday night for driver -
trainer Tom Strauss.
Monday- night at Elmira,
Bill Rapson finished fourth
with Chief Noble and fifth
with Senate Leader. Both
horses are owned by Gord
Rapson of Holmesville.
Jay Dee Dusty was the
winner of the tenth race,
while Jay Dee Lonesome
finished third in the eighth.
They are owned by James D.
Taylor of Hensall.
The' Clinton Housewives are the new champions of the
Huron Central Ladies Recreational Softball League. Front

Pee wee soccer club wins Huron championship
The Clinton Fleming
Stalhons (Pee Wees) rounded
out their best soccer season
ever with a fine 6-3 win over
rivals St. Columban in the
play off finals last Saturday.
The Clinton boys, without
four of their regular players,
event on the attack right from
the start. Charlie Wise broke
free from the St. Columban
Clinton Housewives
win Huron Softball title
The Clinton Housewives are
the champions of the Huron
Central Ladies Softball
league for this year, as they
put out the Clinton Sluggers in
an all -Clinton final series last
week. 11',
TheJz ousewives took 'home
the title by dumping the
Sluggers 11-3 and 12-3 to take
the best of three series two
games straight.
To get to the finals, the
Housewives, sponsored. by
Clere Vu Auto Wreckers,
knocked off the Goderich
Superstars, who were last
year's champs, in two games
straight.
Because they finished on
top' of the league in regular
season's play with a 14 -win,
two -less record, the
Housewives received a bye in
the first round of the playoffs.
'There were nine teams in
the league this: year, which
featured some excellent
softball. Besides the
Housewives and the Sluggers,
there were five teams from
Goderich, a team from
Lucknow, and a team from
Seaforth.

We would like to welcome
everyoneback for another
school year at St. Joseph's.
NEW STAFF
We welcome two new
members to our staff. Our.
new kindergarten teacher is
Mrs. Agnes Gaffney, Mrs.
Gaffney lives near Monkton
and has had seven years of.
teaching experience.
Our other new staff
member is Mrs. Helen
VanBakel. Mrs. VanBakel is
principal's relief and will be
teaching grades 7-8. She is in
her first year of teaching
after having graduated from
the Faculty of Education,'
University of Western
Ontario.
We have a new French
teacher for grades 6-7-8 in the
person of Mr. Leslie Wood.
Mr. Wood comes to us from
Dorion, near Montreal. Mrs.
Margaret Ferguson will be
doing most of the remedial
teaching this year and Mrs.
Lillian Simpson will again
'teach the music.
The rest of the staff
remains the same as - last
year: Mrs. Mary Smith,
grades 1-2; Mrs. Gerda
Man found guilty
Richard``'. Lehnen of RR5
Clinton was found guilty of
, evading payment of income
tax recently and fined $1,300
or three months in jail.
Lehnen appeared in
provincial court and pleaded
guilty to charges of failing to
report $9,000 of salary income
in the 1974 taxation year. By
failing to report the income
he was taken to court by the
Kitchener office 'of the
department of national
revenue for evading payment
of federal income tax taxes

A warm welcome is ex-
tended to the -students and
their families who are new to
the school this year. The
enrolment in St. Joseph's
School is 121 students, an
increase of 12 over last year.
Father Hardy will again be
visiting the school every
Wednesday as well as on
special occasions. On Wed-
nesday, September 7, the
whole school attended Mass
at - the church. For the
remainder of the year Father
Hardy will say Mass in each
classroom} , once a month.
Mass will always be at 9 a.m.
and all parents are invited to
attend. After Mass, Father,
Hardy will visit the other
classrooms.
On Thursday, September
15, the staff met with Father
Hardy at ' the rectory to
discuss the religion program
in the school.
STUDENTS' COUNCIL
Last week the students
elected their 1977-78 Students'
Council. All students voted in
the election. The results
were: Margaret Dupee,
president; Paul Gautreau,
vice-president; Rodney
Merner, treasurer; 'Cheryl
Armstrong, secretary.
Each class also elected a
representative for their
grade.

familar role in the forward
line, put a pass through to
Charlie Wise who made it 3-1.
Wise got his third goal of the
game on a cross from Scott
Bell.
Brent Daw, playing his first'
game in , goal since early
season, had to leave the field
late in the first half with a
thigh injury and Paul
Stephenson, who took over in
net was soon put to the test
when he failed to hold onto a
hard drive from Kevin Coyne
who closed the game to 4-2
before the half.
Brent Daw went back into
net at the start of the second
half and Charlie Wise got his
fourth goal of the game on a
fine pass from Dave Lobb,.
Scott Bell made it 16-2 from
John Elliott and Charlie -Wise.
Kevin Coyne got his third
goal for St. Columban, but by
this time the game was out of
reach for his' team,
Roy, Swart, president of
I-1.M.S.A. and also coach of St.
Columban; presented the play
off trophy to ' captain Tony
Gibbings. The Stallions had
also ended in second place in
regular season league play.
It was all, St. Columban
Clinton in the play-off finals.
The Clinton squirts coached
by Brian Lavis ended third in
league play and lost 3-0 to the.
St. Columban squirts in ' the
finals.

slowpitch ball tournament
will be held at the Stanley
Twp. ball park this Saturday,
September 24. The first game
is scheduled to start at 9

hike
. "Come close to nature" is
the theme while hiking
through the Bannockburn
Wildlife Area. The Ausable-
Bayfield Conservation
Authority will be conducting
a guided hike on Sunday,
October 2nd, from 2 to 4 p.m.
at the scenic Bannockburn
Wildlife Area 11/ miles east of
Varna. Varna is on Huron
County Road 3 between High-
ways 4 and 21.
Naturalists will enjoy
viewing the wide variety of
trees, plants, wildlife and the
beautiful scenery. October is
an ideal month to take part in
such an outing since the crisp
autumn air and fall colours
add to the hiker's enjoyment.
